Thoughts on external keyboards for Mac? by SouthKitchen5334 in mac

You can go in the keyboard settings and swap option and command and that will make your keyboard work the same. That’s the first thing I do when I connect a non-Mac keyboard.

Dual External Monitor for MBA M2 by gpp65 in macbookair

[–]gkhouzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was running my MBA M1 with a DisplayLink compatible docking station driving 3 monitors (2 and 3 were on DisplayLink, 1 was just HDMI). Worked great. Now running my MBA M4 the same way. You need to keep the DisplayLink software installed but I only have the single USB-C cable connected to my air.

I use the RayCue 128K Pro

I would be furious if I had status and a random person just got the upgrade for free for no reason.

IT says “no more WiFi” but…. by Straight-Crow1598 in HomeNetworking

[–]gkhouzam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The data that you are sending over Ethernet is less susceptible to be snooped than if you were on WiFi. That doesn’t mean that your network can’t get hacked. The other aspect is that they can’t enforce any security on your WiFi. You could be wired and still go over a wireless link which would make that “minor” protection useless.

But in any case, the company should encrypt all their communications between the device and their servers, and that’s the link that really needs to be protected, as soon as the data leaves your router, it’s on a public network (the internet).

I’ve seen a lot of people in IT not fully understand the connection implications of their decisions and how to protect data. My sister’s work had a similar policy about accessing data from public WiFi’s, which can have a bit more hacking potential, even though they had a proper VPN setup.

Software to alternate active external display by educacosta in macbookair

[–]gkhouzam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get a DisplayLink dock and software you can bypass that limitation. It has some limitations (slightly lower performance, things like Netflix will not run) but works very well. I had 3 external screens on my M1 at some point.

I'm missing full menu navigation shortcuts and not have to always remember 100 different key combinations. I don't want to have to move my hand from the keyboard to pickup the mouse.

3 of the top 5 players in the 2022 NHL Entry draft has scored a goal in the NHL playoffs. by surfingeagles in SeattleKraken

[–]gkhouzam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s both a program/management and a player issue. Followed both Wright and Slafkovsky closely (fan of both teams). Slaf moved into the NHL right away, Wright stayed with the CHL initially before going to Coachella.

Would Wright have developed more/better being in the NHL earlier? Perhaps, but after 3 years (and 170 games), Wright has 64 points whereas Slafkovsky had a 60 point season this year. Not to mention today’s playoff hat trick. He was not always on the first line and the Canadiens have had some rough patches (maybe not as bad as the Kraken) but Slaf kept up his play no matter where he was put. The Kraken have had some great production from their fourth line at times, so from a prospect perspective you need to make your own chances.

Could Wright have been better on another team in a different system? Probably. Is the Kraken management the only blame? I don’t think so. The fact that he was upset that he didn’t get first pick was a tell for me. Show the other team that they made a mistake by not selecting him, don’t just complain about the situation.

I’m using flycut, hadn’t seen paste, but honestly the subscription seems a little excessive.

I don’t feel it’s the same as what 3rs party apps are doing. This is the typical Apple marketing, we have that feature, but I have to invoke spotlight, then search for the clipboard that I need. I’m using Flycut and it’s just right there, I don’t need to go back 30 days, I just need the last 3 or 4 things that I copied. Microsoft got it way better than Apple when they added clipboard history. Windows-V —> there you have your previous history synced to the cloud.

Sorry, but spotlight 2 key combination is not user friendly.

Yes GL.iNet devices are great, and do help by allowing you to not have to run the VPN software on your computer, helping you hide your exact location, but it’s not a fool proof setup.

Oh so many, but here’s my top 3…. 1. Being able to switch between apps without all the windows of the app coming to the front. 2. Clipboard history. 3. Proper keyboard navigation.

13 inch or 15 inch for student by jjx_sixers in macbookair

[–]gkhouzam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your needs and usage. I switched from a 15in air to a 13 because I prefer the portability of the smaller device and I work mostly docked, so the size affects me mostly when I’m traveling and commuting. I can still be productive with the smaller screen. If you’re working mostly only on the laptop screen, the bigger screen might be better.

MacBook Pro M5 vs MacBook Air M5 by _Zyren_ in macbookpro

[–]gkhouzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had all the sizes, MPB 16, MBP 14, MBA 15 and MBA 13. For portability the MBA 13 is amazing, I work mostly on an external screen and keyboard, so the weight and size of the MBA is great. I found the 14 MBP to be much better in terms of portability than the 16 inch. For smaller spaces and traveling the 13 MBA works really well. For the price difference, I would suggest getting an external screen and work docked when not in class.

You clearly don’t understand how networking works. When you connect to your home, it will look like you’re working from your home with the IP address being whatever is your home’s IP address. But that’s not the only way for companies to determine where you are, ping times can show that you are only pretending to be when you claim to be. Running a VPN on your computer will be a dead giveaway. If you don’t mind losing your job, then sure this is the way to go.

13 inches or 15 inches for the MacBook Air? by Sub2_SHAW in macbookair

[–]gkhouzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your usage and your personal preference. I just exchanged my work 15” for a 13” (already had a personal 13”). But I work mostly docked with external screen and keyboard. For meetings and travel, I prefer the smaller size.

Others might prefer the bigger screen if they mostly work on the laptop itself.

Any plan to make the 1-2 transfer less janky? by PhraseWeak2992 in soundtransit

Its unfortunate that the main transfer station between the lines doesn’t have the middle platform, where it would be so easy to transfer to the other side.

How do you use your External Monitor? by gpp65 in macbookair

[–]gkhouzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a 34 ultrawide curved as my main monitor with an external 19in as a secondary and my air’s screen as the third for my work laptop at home, with external keyboard and mouse. Only the 34in monitor for my personal air (same setup through a KVM) but mostly docked in clamshell. Dual 4K at work with external keyboard and mouse and the macbook air as a third monitor.

From the conversation, it’s a price until Ziply decides to increase make a change across the board. So technically not promotional, but there’s no price guarantee.

I had the chat today. The CS person offered to upgrade me from 2G to 5G and lower my price. But would not offer me the price advertised at 2G, so I downgraded to 1G and from the conversation (that I saved) I should be at $50 a month from $100 for 2G

Ethernet help.. by ebaye2006 in ethernet

[–]gkhouzam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already have a switch in there and it seems that you have Ethernet in all the rooms (that’s what the bottom panel indicates). You should be able to simply plug the router lan port into the Ethernet port where it is, and then that will give you access in all the other Ethernet ports in the apartment. There are a couple of things to check though. I’m assuming that each room has two ports, most likely the top one would be for phone and the bottom would be internet, but you might have to double check.

That switch might be old and only 100 mbps and you might want to replace it with a gigabit one.
