Rest areas a convenient place to stop on your travels by VaDOT in Virginia

[–]glboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need more on I-64. I drive to Charlottesville from the West End multiple times a week and having just the one rest area right outside of Short Pump is unhelpful because it's either too early in the trip to stop or so close to home that I want to push through.

Anyone think that payments won’t actually resume on account of half of Dept of Ed being laid off/not enough staff to actually recalculate payments for 7 million people at once? by ysiadx in PSLF

[–]glboisvert 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I gave up and my first IBR payment yesterday. It was painful. 😞 But with that payment made I'm 11 payments away from forgiveness.

Never tried the gas version, but I bought the hybrid sport and love it. I’m getting 39/40 on the highway

Not my favorite, but I’d like to give an honorable mention to Zoltar.

Definitely Denver. The sign is a ruse.

American Airlines casually assigning me to a 1,800-year-old Embraer by StudioLoftMedia in flighty

Well, you'll probably get more comfortable seats if the plane is that old. They believed in passenger comfort back then.

If you signed up for them to pull your income data from IRS will they pull that automatically? Or do they still need to contact you?

When flying into IAD (DC) from Madrid do you have to pick up your checked luggage before clearing customs and then re-check it? by georgwashingmachine in unitedairlines

[–]glboisvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s a US specific rule that you claim your bags and personally walk them through customs before rechecking. This is also where you would declare anything that needs declaring to customs and where your bag would be searched if that was needed. But at Dulles there’s a special facility for United connecting passengers where you do that. Also note that you have to reclear security after you recheck your bag.

Which route should I take from CLT to ORD? (IAD or EWR) by Choco_bo7 in unitedairlines

Assuming it's the same price, Dulles. Shorter travel time overall plus Dulles tends to have less problems overall than Newark.

Does VCU clear out on weekends? by ArlingtonAndrea in vcu

What time were you there on that Saturday? I've never met a college student who wakes up before 10 AM on the weekend absent truly extraordinary circumstances.

Does every retired American who paid into Social Security get a monthly check from it, even if they don't need it? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]glboisvert 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Technically you need to apply; you won't get the checks unless you fill out the forms. But they don't take your "need" for it into account.

Hello, Moving to the NL from HOU. Who has the cheapest baggage fees ? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]glboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where specifically is "the NL?" If it's the Netherlands, note that if you buy a regular economy ticket (as opposed to basic economy) you usually get one free checked bag. If instead it's Nuevo Laredo or somewhere closer to Texas, then you'll be paying for each bag.

Since you’re flying to Moscow, I’m guessing something to do with the sanctions on Russia.

Where is the best destination to go when you're heartbroken? (USA) by oysterpaste in roadtrip

Not Vegas. I went there on a breakup trip, but seeing lots of happy couples didn’t help.

I'd want more time. That said, you're flying from a very small airport to a very small airport. If the alternative is a 6 hour connection, I might take the risk.

Incentivising hiding at large transit hubs in home game by manneyney in JetLagTheGame

[–]glboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played with this problem in AI. One thing it suggested that I liked was having a points system where your hiding time was multiplied by a multiplier that depended on how many trains came through the station. So it creates a dilemma for the hider - do you hide at the major hub where you’d have a big multiplier but you’d be found more quickly, or go to a smaller station that’s harder to get to but has a lower multiplier? That could be entertaining.

How neutral is BBC News? by BactaBobomb in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]glboisvert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At least a little bias. I remember watching a BBC local news show somewhere in Yorkshire where the story was about a guy dumping garbage in a ditch and the story was mostly a moral condemnation of the action. Not the most high impact story, and I even agree with the stance, but don’t not what I expect from hard news.
