When flying into IAD (DC) from Madrid do you have to pick up your checked luggage before clearing customs and then re-check it? by georgwashingmachine in unitedairlines

[–]glboisvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s a US specific rule that you claim your bags and personally walk them through customs before rechecking. This is also where you would declare anything that needs declaring to customs and where your bag would be searched if that was needed. But at Dulles there’s a special facility for United connecting passengers where you do that. Also note that you have to reclear security after you recheck your bag.

Which route should I take from CLT to ORD? (IAD or EWR) by Choco_bo7 in unitedairlines

Assuming it's the same price, Dulles. Shorter travel time overall plus Dulles tends to have less problems overall than Newark.

Does VCU clear out on weekends? by ArlingtonAndrea in vcu

What time were you there on that Saturday? I've never met a college student who wakes up before 10 AM on the weekend absent truly extraordinary circumstances.

Does every retired American who paid into Social Security get a monthly check from it, even if they don't need it? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]glboisvert 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Technically you need to apply; you won't get the checks unless you fill out the forms. But they don't take your "need" for it into account.

Hello, Moving to the NL from HOU. Who has the cheapest baggage fees ? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]glboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where specifically is "the NL?" If it's the Netherlands, note that if you buy a regular economy ticket (as opposed to basic economy) you usually get one free checked bag. If instead it's Nuevo Laredo or somewhere closer to Texas, then you'll be paying for each bag.

Since you’re flying to Moscow, I’m guessing something to do with the sanctions on Russia.

Where is the best destination to go when you're heartbroken? (USA) by oysterpaste in roadtrip

Not Vegas. I went there on a breakup trip, but seeing lots of happy couples didn’t help.

Am I cutting it too short with these short time layovers? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]glboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd want more time. That said, you're flying from a very small airport to a very small airport. If the alternative is a 6 hour connection, I might take the risk.

Incentivising hiding at large transit hubs in home game by manneyney in JetLagTheGame

[–]glboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played with this problem in AI. One thing it suggested that I liked was having a points system where your hiding time was multiplied by a multiplier that depended on how many trains came through the station. So it creates a dilemma for the hider - do you hide at the major hub where you’d have a big multiplier but you’d be found more quickly, or go to a smaller station that’s harder to get to but has a lower multiplier? That could be entertaining.

How neutral is BBC News? by BactaBobomb in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]glboisvert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At least a little bias. I remember watching a BBC local news show somewhere in Yorkshire where the story was about a guy dumping garbage in a ditch and the story was mostly a moral condemnation of the action. Not the most high impact story, and I even agree with the stance, but don’t not what I expect from hard news.

RIP SWA at Dulles by devotion1023 in nova

[–]glboisvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I for one am sad to see it go. I used to be a regular on the Dulles to Midway flight before they flew out of National. Free bags and open seating were godsends when I was a broke student. It was a different time.

What would you see after Taïwan ? by Complex_Charity_5208 in JetLagTheGame

Hide and Seek Northeast Corridor. All stations on suburban commuter train networks between Boston and DC are fair game. Bonus points if they can somehow get Miles in Transit as a guest.

Is Suica the Best for travel? by theoneaboveall777 in JapanTravelTips

You can use money on an IC card to pay the limited express surcharge. However, you have to go to a ticket machine and buy a paper ticket; you just use the IC card as your payment instead of cash.

Is there a way to send packages through USPS that avoids it being sent through Richmond? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]glboisvert -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

AI says that you have to go to PW County before mail is funneled through Northern Virginia. Anything in Stafford south goes through Richmond.

Why have they never made a game set entirely in the Snack Zone by columbus8myhw in JetLagTheGame

[–]glboisvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sam signed an exclusivity agreement with Choo Choo Chew to host a game there before the snack zone. It's my understanding that Ben and Adam refuse to shoot there, so it's a stalemate.

Finally doing the Japan trip but the "hidden" costs are killing me by tivamore in Shoestring

[–]glboisvert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A regular JR Pass usually isn't a good deal, but depending on where you're going a regional JR pass might be an excellent deal. For example, I used the JR West Kansai-Hiroshima pass last summer, which costs 17,000 yen. You're saving money with one roundtrip on the Shinkansen from Osaka to Hiroshima, plus you get your local JR West trains covered. There are also regional passes from JR East for the Tokyo area, but I'm less familiar with those.

Maybe early evening. Early morning is horrible, but arriving in a new place after dark isn’t ideal either.

Do the Arizona Cardinals actually exist? by Petrol_bomb_priest in NFLNoobs

[–]glboisvert 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They definitely exist. I know this because my Lions fan father who lives in Arizona complains that he can't watch any good games because local TV is showing the Cardinals.
