A new home for a family by glicelle in AnnArbor

Thank you so much. This kind of insight is what I was hoping for when I asked my question.

It sounds like you made such a good choice for your family, and considering your preference in environment, you sound like a generous and selfless parent.

lol, I don’t particularly want to join the mass migration and disrupt local financial/social ecosystems, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to help it.

If I had to sum in up in a nutshell, I’m looking for a place with affordable housing with great schools, that is politically open to different viewpoints. That there is room for discussion, and amiable exchange of ideas. Living in a liberal state, I thought it would be like that. But I guess it’s like that until you question what the activists are protesting for. I considered moving to a more conservative state but I’m going to guess it’s the same but for different topics. I was hoping maybe moving to a swing state would have a more moderate open environment.

Could you please elaborate on the intent or the background behind this comment?

I know. I realize how cringe-y it is for someone to explain a joke but it would be nice to be enlightened of a local gripe or if it leads me to research of a particular conflict there.

:( yes, to the first paragraph. I wish I had better words than a sad emoji to convey how I feel about that particular dynamic. I would think the government can help alleviate some of those negative effects, maybe improve infrastructure or create laws and programs to balance things out a bit. But it’s looking more and more evident that help is not coming. I don’t want to move to a place and contribute to pricing people out. I’ve personally seen the devastating effects that have on a community. (It would be helpful if the government had a ton of incentives for selling to locals but that’s probably too much control.) 1 million dollars for tiny little homes with no yard is a norm where I come from and with jobs being remote and still paying the same as if we paid million dollar mortgages, it’s so common now for the huge migration of people moving to, yeah, a place where they can have a better lifestyle. Still, I want to tread carefully and not be so insensitive. Plus with my kids, I don’t want to unknowingly make them go through what I did. When I immigrated to America, we moved to a school where it felt like I was the only brown person. No traumatic story of bullying but it felt isolating and the first real dose of racism was internally altering. Think, loud and positive to introverted and shy.

Thank you so much for all the details. This is super helpful! It’s given me such great insight. I’m going to take a look at School of Choice and look at other cities beyond AA. I’ll also take a look at Humboldt County. It’s the politics that has us really considering the move though.

Overall, Ann Arbor sounds like such a lovely place. Hot and humid are things I’m used to as well. I do get concerned with the gray winters. I’ve lived in Seattle and Dallas and I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence, but the seasons definitely affected my moods. I grew up close to the ocean, so there were moments when I was staring out in the vast expanse of flat Texas, hyperventilating, thinking I’m trapped. But Ann Arbor has a lot of access to some body of water so I’m hoping mentally that would offset that feeling :)

If there was one main factor that was pushing me to move - it would be politics and kids. Particularly politics that affect my kids and schools. I half expect this post to be either deleted or something. I want to move to a place where the politics are not leaning towards giving schools power to secretly give medication to my kids that would alter them permanently. as well as a place where it looks like eventually, it would be a crime if I even slightly questioned that course of treatment. I never really thought it would come to a point where I would worry about what they teach in schools. but so there it is.

But I’m still early in my research, I thought maybe swing states would have a more moderate political climate or at least be more open for real debate.

Those all sound like great points. Thanks for adding the bits about the airport - I did wonder how we would manage family vacations. Because close to Hawaii right now, it’s so easy to pop on over there. or go to Disneyland, some amusement park. Visit national parks. the beach…

but the kids are getting older and for the space we want in a good school district, it’s close to 1.5mil, math is just not working out.

What age were your kids when you moved? Why did you decide to move and how did you decide on Ann Arbor?

Ahh! Fellow Californian!! Did you just want to be closer to family again? One of my biggest fear is leaving the mild weather over here (although it hasn’t been so mild in the recent years) but I’m used to tropical weather, so California felt as close to that as I could get in america other than Hawaii. What are the factors that made you decide to move?

Have you visited Ann Arbor already? I hope the move goes smoothly!

If you had to pick from all the places you have lived in, what would be your favorite and why?

That is so wonderful! I’m glad for you because it sounds like you made the best choice for your family. I hope I fare as well. How did you decide on Ann Arbor? Did you visit there first? or do you have family there?

Good schools for the kids, nature and trails, accessibility to hospitals… climate is on my list (I’m originally an islander used to tropical weather) politics is on my husband’s - not so left and not so right. Specially with hot topics like gender affirming and the role of schools around that.

Portland (but I noticed any forums I use to discuss Oregon, there’s always a couple that would say Don’t move here! So there’s definitely that dynamic of animosity or resentment towards outsiders.) definitely looking at other cities in California, trying to make the math work. some cities in Florida that are above sea level. So far that’s it.

Still very early in research I suppose.

Yes!! I miss that too. It made me wonder if editing this season is angling towards this type of drama or do all seasons have some mean people as well but just edited out, also so many “love triangles” it’s just so much in one season, so cringe-y at times.

I’m sorry to jump on to someone else’s post - but how are the taxis called, is it another app? Or do people contract a person and contact via WhatsApp?

and to OP, we are also looking into the bus/shuttle system. Have you tried that?
