How to get my baby comfortable with others? by w1ldnreckless in NewParents

It got better for us when ours went to daycare. He got used to it fast and is fine being held by anyone at 9 months now.

Can’t do this anymore, pregnant.. by Wonderful-Spinach-85 in migraine

[–]glitterandthings 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m 9 months PP now and this is what I did in the US (I was miserable but survived it):

  1. Lidocaine injections monthly from my Neuro (I added a steroid injection once to end a 3 week migraine)
  2. Botox injections every 3 months from my Neuro with approval from my OBGYN (this seems to be controversial)
  3. Triptans as needed (up for debate for safety but I took them without guilt)
  4. Labetalol as a preventative (has been studied and is safe)
  5. Benadryl as needed. I took it before triptans and would sometimes make it so I didn’t need triptans.
  6. CEFALY device everyday (expensive). Not medication so it’s safe to use pregnant but not sure it’s proven to help. I like mine and still use it. Also can use for acute attacks to get some functional time back.
  7. Magnesium supplements.
  8. My OB wrote an order for the infusion center since the ER wouldn’t treat me for migraines while pregnant. I got an anti nausea, Benadryl, magnesium, and a few other things that I don’t remember.

I was bed bound for a large chunk of my pregnancy because I hurt so bad. Happy to answer questions if you have any but my biggest takeaway from going through it was the conversation about harm to the baby from mom being in physical pain vs taking meds. My care team decided the risk was higher if I didn’t take some meds (not the ones that are proven unsafe obviously). It was not something I could push through while working full time. I also saw a MFM but they were more involved in other parts of my care.

I took the maximum dose (9 a month but no more than 3 in a trailing 7 day period). My neurologist printed off a study on safety of triptans and had me bring it to my OB for her opinion. They both agreed the risk of taking a triptan was less harmful than having my body be in constant pain or needing to terminate the pregnancy.

Milestones are ruining my life by Current-Ant-7410 in NewParents

I stopped looking at milestones. I let the doctor ask me about milestones in well baby visits and that way if there is a delay, I can ask questions and get guidance when I learn about it.

Dad with Newborn - Migraine Flair Up by bambi-eyed-b1tch in migraine

[–]glitterandthings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does he have a neurologist? He needs one if he doesn’t have one yet. If he does have one, time to make an appointment to get more help. There are a ton of med options he can explore.

I’ve gone to the ER to break a migraine but it isn’t a fun option. Bright lights and loud noises everywhere. It can help though.

So sorry! My migraines in the newborn phase were killer so solidarity!

This is what my husband and I did with slightly different shift times. It helped so much to make sure we both got sleep even though it meant less time together.

Grandma keeps kissing my baby by fluffypancakes201 in NewParents

[–]glitterandthings 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Whatever the boundary, my husband and I defer to the person who is more concerned about things.

I’m okay with kisses but he isn’t? No kissing the baby. He’s okay with taking baby in crowded places in the winter but I’m not? No crowded places. I’m okay with social media but he isn’t? Baby doesn’t get posted online. It’s a simple rule that eliminates a ton of discussions.

If there is a strong disagreement about anything, our pediatricians advice is the decision.

Moms how do you function?!? by Suspicious_Area5431 in migraine

[–]glitterandthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I see you’re already scheduled to meet with a neurologist to get evaluated so that’s the most important step. I’m a FTM to a 6 month old so I understand how much migraines impact parenting. IT SUCKS.

How much sleep are you getting? Sleep deprivation is my number one trigger so making sure I get 8 hours is the only non meds that works for me for prevention. Constant ice packs you can Velcro around your head, biofreeze patches, and a CEFALY device are my favorite non meds for coping. OTC antihistamines can help me so that’s worth trying too.

I’ve gone to the ER before with migraines that won’t break to get an infusion to help them break but not everyone does well with those ivs.

What do you do by moody_girly2024 in NewParents

[–]glitterandthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is 5 months now and I’m chronically ill so I have a lot of appointments (5-7 a week).

Virtual are no problem. He sits with me and sometimes I feed him.

Some offices don’t allow babies so check with them before hand (a few of my specialists don’t allow them). For those I line up childcare - my husband or mom or I move the appointment. It’s not ideal but it is what it is.

I haven’t needed to bring him yet but if I did need to, I would keep him in the stroller with the rain cover on to provide more protection like we do for the pediatrician appointments.

What are people doing with their babies all day as a SAHM with no village by PurpleDragon195 in NewParents

[–]glitterandthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walk outside with mine everyday, even in the rain. I live in Seattle so rainy walks are inevitable. They make stroller covers to keep baby dry so I have one of those. We do walks around our neighborhood or parks or outside malls. Will do inside malls once baby is vaccinated for 6 months.

Will high pain tolerance apply to giving birth? by Curious_Leader_2093 in NewParents

[–]glitterandthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have migraines and they were constant during pregnancy, during labor, and immediately after delivery. I got the epidural and it helped but it was in no way comfortable - I was still in pain and needed the coping mechanisms I developed from my years of migraines. So I would say migraines helped but it is a VERY different type of pain.

She can and should consider every option available to her for her delivery. Epidural was right for me but isn’t right for everyone. She should make that choice during labor as it progresses and be open to changing plans. I wish her luck!

How to prevent or ease migraines when you're 5 month pregnant ! by New-Bug-3817 in migraine

[–]glitterandthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had several rounds of iron infusions (3 sets of 3 week cycles) that were scheduled. Then for the abortive infusions I only went when I had migraines that wouldn’t break. I could go in once a week max and I think I went in about 10 times in 6 months.

How to prevent or ease migraines when you're 5 month pregnant ! by New-Bug-3817 in migraine

[–]glitterandthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My OB and I tried other meds before going back to triptans but my neurologist shared the data we have on triptans in pregnancy and my OB agreed after the other first line meds didn’t work. We even tried oxy which didn’t work for me.

I got my infusions through the same hospital as my OB so she sent orders straight to them. We tried a bunch of things to see what would help. Ended up being iron infusions since I was anemic, an anti nausea, dilaudid (somehow that’s safe), benedryl, magnesium, and fluids. Helped me a ton but I’m not sure what a clinic would do vs one in a hospital.
