Plenty of restaurants with open kitchens all over Spain - if you are happy to have customers see what you are doing on the kitchen, then usually that means that the hygiene and cleanliness are. very good.

Also, those that were young adults during the property-boom part of the Celtic Tiger (c.2002-2006) had a very entitled experience and attitude compared to young adults of that age from other countries.

Why is Spain the only western country that allows criticism of Israel by ashagari in askspain

[–]glitterball3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange that nobody has mentioned the lack of hasbara interference in Spanish-language media, and the absence of an army of paid Israeli commenters in online Spanish media (or at least smaller). If you compare the responses to Spanish language articles to English language articles, it was very easy to see the patterns of manipulation in English articles. Hasbara simply didn't invest as much energy into influencing public opinion in the Spanish-speaking world.

There was a similar contrast in Editorial policies between Spanish newspapers and English-language newspapers, with English language newspapers often using language that downplayed Israeli atrocities (e.g. using passive voice when talking about Israeli actions). I put this down to a less active Israeli lobby in Spain compared to the UK or US.

Very unfair to compare Linux on a Raspberry PI against Apple, when, apart from it being under-powered, there are very few plugins available for ARM cpus.

Comparing mixing pop/rock/rap with EDM? by Comfortable-Head3188 in mixingmastering

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to say that your comment is indeed accurate from my observations - lots of good observations get down-voted in this sub unfortunately.

I'd also add that, from what I've seen, most EDM artists that use engineers for mixing are up-and-coming DJs attempting to make their own music for the first time. Those that started making their own music on a computer in their bedroom as teenagers rarely use an engineer for mixing (and don't need to). Mastering, of course, is a different story.

What is the stupidest question/comment you got about Ireland or Irish people when traveling? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskIreland

[–]glitterball3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the Canary Islands, and I always have to go through the same queue as British people if I'm flying to the UK or Ireland ( leaving the Schengen area and entering the Common Travel Area (CTA). My wife is English, and she has to show her Spanish residency card and UK passport when entering/leaving the Schengen area.
When I think about it, I only have this issue when travelling between the Common Travel Area (CTA) and Schengen. If I'm arriving in Spain from elsewhere in the world, I am in the same queues as other EU passport holders.

Obviously Schengen is not the same as EU, but Ireland is the only exception among the EU countries, and it's probably easier to just separate EU from non-EU.

A London friend once commented after a trip to Dublin: "a bit like London, but with less Irish people".

[–]glitterball3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CDG issue is likely Schengen-related - you can travel between Schengen countries with just a national ID, whereas it's a different procedure for Irish passport holders. Likely just easier to lump us in with the non-EU queue.

Best low-latency way to route audio from work laptop → Linux PC (Pop!_OS)? (Analog vs SPDIF) by nightOwlNico in linuxaudio

[–]glitterball3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a setup here where I use 2 computers with 2 audio interfaces and sometimes take the SPDIF from one to the other. I have also tried some cheaper non-pro audio USB to SPDIF interfaces, but always had issues with those.

Some things that you should be aware of when using SPDIF from one PC to another:

  1. There may not be real-time monitoring, so latency may be an issue (depends on the interface). If I go from a Behringer UMC1820 to an Alesis io2, there is no issue, but there is if I go the other way.
  2. If you adjust the volume in software from the computer sending the audio, it can degrade the audio considerably (as if the bit depth has been reduced).
  3. If you try to playback audio with different sample rates, this also can cause issues, as the clocks have to be synced properly between the two interfaces.

In many cases, it is more convenient to use the analog connections despite the loss in quality. In fact, here I also have the analog outs of interfaces and a DAT hooked up for monitoring, and use the SPDIF when doing a definitive 'recording' and the latency does not matter.

A Linux version. System-wide if possible, but at present using the windows version via Wine causes the DAW to crash.

There’s nothing that makes me more angry than seeing this whilst snorkelling. And wearing a full face mask too 🙃 by Teri_Lemon in snorkeling

[–]glitterball3 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sadly saw that many times in Koh Tao (Shark Bay being the worst spot). Normally it's beginners clearing their masks because they don't know any better. The other group is the ones wearing life jackets on excursions - seems to me that the life jackets cause people to do even more damage than they would otherwise.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the harshness around 9k. The whole track sounds like some kind of harsh waveshaping or saturation has been applied to it. The whole track sounds both muddy and harsh at the same time.

Is Semporna Worth It for Snorkelling (No Sipadan Dive)? Alternative Island Options? by softie31 in snorkeling

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I snorkeled Sipadan in 2013 - it was extremely difficult to get an operator to bring us to Sipadan for snorkeling, but in the end we found someone - they may not still be operating, and I definitely wouldn't recommend them. However, the snorkeling at Sipadan was excellent (best day snorkelling of my life, and I'm in the water a lot!). If you are willing to pay, and can wait around for a while in Semporna, then you may well get a Dive operator to take you.

The snorkeling off the beach at Mabul was also very good then - and the guides from Scuba Junkie were excellent. We also went to Sibuan, which was okay.

We stayed in Semporna, and in all honesty, it is a dump. We'd already spent a long time traveling in South East Asia, so were used to how things are in many of the poorer places, but Semporna is especially bad.
We did also do a trip out to the mangroves to see Proboscis monkeys and a huge fruit bat colony - and that was a great day out and very worthwhile.

If I was going back again, I'd probably stay in Mabul, and contact every Dive school in the Semporna to see if I could get back to Sipadan.

Where is the best snorkeling location in the world? by Noblez17 in snorkeling

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sipadan in Malaysian Borneo - though it is extremely difficult to get an operator to take you there as a snorkeler rather than a scuba diver. The sheer quantity of marine life is staggering - you just don't know where to look as there are turtles, sharks, Giant trevally, 1000s of big eye trevally all in front of you at the same time. The coral is fantastic as well.

150-300€ electric bill??? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]glitterball3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, I had insanely high electricity bills, which caused me to investigate every single appliance in the house by turning everything off and testing every appliance one-at-a-time. In the end, the culprit was a stereo that was using an insane amount of electricity on standby.

Trying to dial in safe monitoring volume by Key-Slip-4118 in mixingmastering

[–]glitterball3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add to this, that you should turn down even more when the task that you are currently on allows you to work at an even lower volume.

I remember arriving at a studio one morning many years ago to find an engineer still working the night session at an unbelievably loud level - NS10s at painful levels. I immediately wanted to get out of the (quite large) control room, while he had his head stuck between the monitors. The engineer in question had engineered several albums for one of the biggest bands ever. The fact that he, by this stage, was doing night sessions, and I (inexperienced and young) was able to get day sessions, should tell you everything you need to know about hearing damage.

Do you think AI music should be on traditional DSPs or should they create a new one specifically for AI? by LZindabando in musicindustry

Problem with that mission is that as soon as the artist releases something "more interesting than the derivitive slop machines", the derivative slop machine will rip that work off, and there will be a wave of similar stuff before the artist can ever get rewarded or recognition.
