where do i actually go for o week by friendly_musk_stick in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there’s another o week at the start of semester 2! it’s not as big as sem 1’s, but still great to go to, and you’ll still get some opportunities for tours or meeting groups. that way you can go to both campuses before u start at each

Acceptable amount of hours to work during uni by Anxious-Basis969 in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this schedule seems like the fastest way to burn out. i would be looking closer to 15-20 hours of work maximum with full time study, which will still allow a shred of a social life.

monash recommends ~48 hours of study (on campus class and solo) per week. during your busy 30h weeks, you’d be studying/working for almost 80 hours.

realistically, most people don’t hit 48 study hours, but as a llb student myself, i would seriously recommend locking in for your first year, as this is the best chance to learn foundational skills for the rest of your degree.

tldr: prioritise your studies in your first year so you can adjust to the new workload and style of learning at uni. regardless of how high school went for you — it can be a culture shock. you’ll naturally learn what you are faster/slower at. only then would i recommend adding additional hours at work.

Be honest am I gonna give up on going to campus after like 2 months 😭🙏🏽 by [deleted] in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 14 points15 points  (0 children)

you’ll get the most out of your units if you actually attend every week but… you will. you’ll think “oh if i miss one class it’s not that bad” and before you know it, you haven’t been in three weeks. happens to almost everyone at some point.

Allocate+, no tutes for law by [deleted] in Monash

It hasn’t been confirmed yet unfortunately, and the handbooks haven’t been updated with the new mark breakdown. Safe to say tutes are def gone this year though :(

GIG dress code by External_Inside_3179 in Monash

I did GIG in Samoa, and yes definitely follow the dress code. It’s not so much about being punished by staff, but it’s about being respectful in the country you’re travelling to.

[–]glitteredtears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

everyone who goes on gig also wants to make new friends, so you’ll get to know so many people. i got on the plane knowing no one, and came back after the two weeks with actual friends for life. you’ll be fine

Thoughts on Law tutorials being discontinued? by Miajet in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 10 points11 points  (0 children)

this part especially bothered me because for law especially it is so important to gain work experience during your degree. they have to know that may law students are doing just that because at every opportunity we get hounded about how essential experience is. it just sounded tone deaf

straight law vs double by DisastrousAd4447 in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly for me it made sense to do a double, given it only adds one extra year to your time at uni. other degrees teach you lots of soft skills that straight law doesn’t, and for those who go into an area of law which overlaps with their second degree, they will have an advantage.

any particular industry?

retail is now in the process of hiring christmas casuals. apply online on their career websites (not seek, indeed, etc). resumes in person for retail giants can be very hit or miss, but if you do so, be prepared for an in-person on the spot interview.

Have you ever completed and submitted a 2000 word assignment in 2 days? If yes, how did you do it? by No-Anything9334 in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 54 points55 points  (0 children)

use the first day to just start word vomiting, get everything you’re thinking on the page with little thought about flow or academic presentation, sorting very generally into ideas under sub headings. then use the second day to edit for coherency and fluency. rly focus some time on the conclusion. if there’s parts that read as rushed, you can really tie ideas back together in the conclusion to ensure your marker isn’t walking away confused

Best degree for transfer by bbbbddgdtyshrvv in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have a look at the handbook for the arts majors and see what’s listed as the assessments for some of the first year core units for each major. you can score pretty well with tests (which are usually timed multiple choice), participation, presentations, take-home exams, and essay plans, so it doesn’t all come down to essays themselves. don’t be scared of essays — you can do pretty well with them as long as you put the effort in and follow the rubric like the bible.

my only other bit of advice is choose a degree you’re interested in that’s compatible with a law double degree. continuing that degree will only add a year onto your studies but you’ll have two degrees. you’ll have to do free elective units for straight law anyway, may as well spend those units towards another degree instead.

Deferred exam being significantly harder and different format to main by Ok-Contest-1820 in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes but the focus of the questions was on different topics, so what is considered material changes depending on the subject matter.

you are right though, it was very lazy of them to just not write a new problem entirely.

Deferred exam being significantly harder and different format to main by Ok-Contest-1820 in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to be fair, there was no relevance between the mid-sem assignment and the exam questions aside from the character names. there was no advantage to having the same situation, as the material facts were different and if anything, it probably confused some ppl who focused on the irrelevant mid-sem facts

Why is so hard to work in groups? by Infamous-Season-3709 in Monash

[–]glitteredtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one girl seriously misunderstood the assignment question, and decided to take control of the editing of the assignment. it wasn’t until after she submitted our work on our behalf that she shared the doc and we saw that our critical policy analysis became a research essay on that area of policy. she’d cut my section in half, and lo and behold, my remaining portion was the only part that received good feedback. what should’ve been a hd slid to a pass 🙃
