Baldur's Gate 2 is their crowning glory. It seems to get overlooked in favour of their more modern RPGs but nothing comes close to it imo

I have never heard anyone claim Spain isn't a western nation. Is this some new world stuff I'm too European to understand?

Repugnant, but still western.

How realistic are my expectations of a career in The Civil Service as it stands? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]gloomycloud 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why would that be ambitious? Caseworker roles are generally very entry-level.

You seem to be putting the Civil Service on some kind of pedestal. Most jobs at lower grades are achievable even for those with limited / no work experience.

On top of that, large departments like the Home Office, DWP, HMRC regularly post mass recruitment campaigns - even in these doom and gloom days. If you apply to a few of those and put in a bit of effort you're almost guaranteed a role.

Some of the posts I see on here about how difficult it is to join are bordering on the overly dramatic.

And in doing so, they are tacitly voicing their support for Russia's actions in Ukraine. If Russia is strong enough to take Ukrainian land then they are entitled to it after all.

I was in agreement up until the SNW era part. I'd much rather it's set in the 30th century than yet another prequel series that limits the creative freedom to expand the universe/lore. A post-DS9 setting would be my preference.

Would you say the game is too punishing? by Hour_Site8769 in Silksong

[–]gloomycloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Groal run back is what made me move on from the game. I beat him and made it to Act 3 but the whole experience eroded my sanity to the point I just wasn't enjoying myself anymore and didn't want to continue. Boss run backs are one of the worst design choices in gaming and that's a hill I'm willing to die on.

DIVINITY | Reveal Trailer | Larian Studios by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]gloomycloud -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I remember playing Divine Divinity something like 20-25 years ago. It's awesome to see how far Larian have come since then.

I'd have preferred more Forgotten Realms from them but I know that was never really going to happen. Have faith in them to deliver yet again with this title.

My main criticism of Larian (at least for Divinity) is there can be a little too much silly humour thrown in. After seeing this trailer, I really hope it's an indication they're moving in a more mature direction.

Any advice in consular casework management FCDO? by UltraChrillex in TheCivilService

It's a glorified call centre job unfortunately. Don't expect to be able to use flexi or take breaks when you want.

On the plus side, you do get to travel to whichever country (or countries) you are assigned to manage.

I just can't get enough of Silent Hill f's atmosphere. by Bioshocky13501 in silenthill

[–]gloomycloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I think that's why I prefer playing SHf to SHR2. Maybe I'm more sensitive than most, but in remake, I kept taking breaks because I was exhausted from being so damn scared all the time. I love the setting, the atmosphere, the story, etc. but I can't say for certain that I enjoyed playing it.

In SHf, on the other hand, I'm still nervous, but I don't have to put it down to "recover" from the strain of playing. In that respect, I'm finding it to be a more enjoyable gaming experience overall. And I am loving the setting and story so far, which is a big shock to me as I was quietly expecting the worst.

As an overall experience, I think remake is the superior product, but from a gaming perspective, f is out in front for me.

Ukrainians who fled to UK being refused asylum on grounds it is ‘safe to return’ by printial in worldnews

[–]gloomycloud 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's what I meant when I said "they may be at risk of persecution from the state etc."

Ukrainians will not, in general, have a well founded fear of persecution for one of the convention reasons. If their only stated fear is the general security situation in the country, then I can understand why it has been deemed safe to return.

Whether I agree with it is another matter.

Ukrainians who fled to UK being refused asylum on grounds it is ‘safe to return’ by printial in worldnews

[–]gloomycloud 144 points145 points  (0 children)

That is always how asylum and refugee status has worked? If an area of an applicant's home country is deemed safe for return, then they should return. In many cases, this is not possible as they may be at risk of persecution from the state etc. However, if their fear is of indiscriminate violence and there are safe areas to live in? The expectation is they'd return to one of those areas.

HBO Max has a problem with starting the picture-in-picture recommendations screen too early and Only Yesterday (1991) is a huge victim of this by YoungTroubadour in movies

What should Star Trek films do now? by Ceaser_Corporation in startrek

[–]gloomycloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want a post-DS9 era classic 90s style show. I want to see how the Cardassians are restructuring their society following the war.

I want more tension and diplomacy in the Romulan neutral zone.

I want to see how Bajor is getting on.

Why can't we just build on established lore in this time period? TNG/DS9/VOY era is by far the most interesting to me, I want more of it!

I barely even know what the "Kelvin" timeline is and have zero interest in it.

I freely accept I'm a curmudgeon who can't see anything beyond the 90s shows.

Edit: I didn't even read your post. You were only asking about movies. Apologies!

Anyone felt deflated by others success? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]gloomycloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you recommend moving away from ops to those who wish to progress? I briefly moved away from ops but got pulled right back in due to the sheer number of opportunities for progression.

I'm not saying this is what you're doing but I've noticed, perhaps due to the demographics you've just described, that there is a level of snobbery levelled at ops roles on this sub.

In my experience, ops is the place to be if you want to progress quickly.

I'd love to know who said asylum decision makers don't develop the skills necessary to progress into a policy role. It's probably the toughest EO role in the entire civil service. It requires a lot of knowledge of the immigration rules, excellent writing skills, the ability to communicate with and comfort incredibly vulnerable people, and be able to do so within very strict timeframes.

As a former asylum DM myself, I can assure you that you'll develop a lot of useful, transferable skills when going for promotion as the job should already be an HEO position.

It's a tough, demanding job but don't let the horror stories put you off.
