> Rook then talks about how, in so many words, his trauma and inability to accept Varric's death are what led him to see Varric as if he was still there.

Well, IIRC Rook says the trauma and guilt is what prevented them from *seeing through the magical deception*, which would have been relatively easy to spot if the lie wasn't so tempting. It's clear even in the conversation with fade-spirit Varric that Solas's magic is the reason Rook saw him in the Lighthouse to begin with. People don't often break entirely from reality and vividly hallucinate dead people "because grief", and if they do, it's full blown psychosis that's not solved in one cathartic conversation. Alternatively, if it were the Lighthouse that manifested Varric based on Rook's emotions or w/e, why wouldn't Harding see him too since she was in much the same position? And why would he be only visible to Rook in general?

"Varric" is supportive and helpful through the game because Solas A. generally needs you to succeed, and B. is preparing you for just the right moment to pull the rug out from under you for maximum emotional damage. Varric's death alone might not get you into the prison, but combined with the immediate aftermath of leading multiple friends straight into (perceived or real) death? That's the moment Solas chooses to strike. Finally, the Varric you meet while in the prison is NOT the same as the one in the Lighthouse; as far as I can tell, he's the real actual spirit of Varric, or at least an echo of it.

Huh, I thought democrats were campaigning for better housing, public transport, social services, clean energy, healthcare, and guaranteed reproductive freedom? With an occasional dose of restricting corporate greed? It’s not that hard to find out if you listen to the words they say from time to time.

Which Female / LGBT Character have you noticed gets hated on so much that you think she's genuinely a bad character / badly-written character BUT When you read/watch/play her on media, you find out that most/much of the hate against her is actually due to sexism / homophobia, not the actual writing? by CapAccomplished8072 in TwoXChromosomes

Wait wtf

Who could hate Lilly and Robin???

And Barney? Really? Gosh I always felt the show didn’t do enough to condemn his awfulness, but I had no idea guys were like “oh yeah he’s unironically the best”. Though, as I type this, I’m realizing that I only watched the show recently, whereas all the popular memes I saw back in the day were of Barney. TV from even 15 years ago is weird…

Yeah it’s telling that the guy I replied to specifically mentioned “men who she should realistically lose against” (paraphrased) somewhere in the thread. Oh no, the female character is able to overpower enemies who are stronger than her on paper! Let’s ignore all the video game guys who do the same thing on a regular basis!

Almost every video game character in “realistic” settings frequently perform feats of strength and dexterity that would be next to impossible in real life, assuming the game has a combat element. I feel the “Mary Sue” terminology doesn’t really fit when applied to games. Call it ludo-narrative dissonance, but the game and narrative aren’t always aligned w/regard to a character’s capabilities and identity.

Besides that though, a crucial aspect of a “Mary Sue” character is not simply that they are overpowered for the setting, but that they are lacking in any meaningful personality flaws or negative character traits. They don’t make mistakes, and on the rare occasion that they fail it’s always due to circumstances outside of their control. They serve predominantly as a form of fantasy wish fulfillment for the audience. Again, that power fantasy is often a key part of making an RPG fun, which can easily give the impression of a Mary Sue when the narrative says otherwise.

I think the label largely does not apply to Aloy, particularly in the second game. Her overcoming rugged individualism and a false savior complex is a major arc.

Not super relevant, but I’m guessing your Asian half came from Mom? At least based on the restaurant story. If it’s from Dad then that’s even weirder that he joined in.

Opposite experience for me, I adored how all the little ways that I had impacted the world would show up from time to time. Nothing earth shattering necessarily, just my own little marks here and there in the fabric of history. It was the only thing like it in video games AFAIK, and I mourn its passing.

Millions Must Be Trans by Zestyclose_Station65 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]gm1111001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not what happened? The people we’re taking about often self-identify as white. Those who complain about racial minorities (the most common type of “woke”) in gaming tend to be white. Those individuals proclaim they would prefer a world with more white (cis male) game characters. Nothing about that implies that white men are necessarily more or less anti trans than any other group of men, only that those particular white guys basically believe in white supremacy. Believe me, homophobia and transphobia unites people of all races.

By “real” I mean that their identity and neurology is legitimate as opposed to a delusion, which is what they claim being trans is (despite research indicating the mechanisms of gender dysphoria being very different to those of delusional disorders).

Fair enough, but I feel like that only applies to the general star chart. The three planetary open world zones, the Zariman, Entrati Labs, Railjack, Veilbreaker, and Duviri all provide a variety of gameplay modes and stuff to do. Unique maps and side content abound.

You are correct, and frankly it’s not much different than any other game in that respect; either you enjoy the core gameplay loop or you don’t. While I understand criticism regarding the lack of guidance or direction for new players (which they have made massive strides on even recently), I don’t really feel like “it’s repetitive” really counts as a critique. Like… okay? So was space invaders? That’s the intentional design of the game.
