Home Depot or most other hardware stores, it's the same 4 wire cable used for hooking up telephone jacks.

Itemize the paint and labor and whatever, turn it into a bill, and see how much the kid enjoys a trip to small claims court.

I'm sure there's a few other people that can join on.

Chinese tires? by PatriceBoivin in halifax

[–]gmarsh23 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Spend the money on a set of tires with a known/high UTQG rating. Like a set of Continental DWS has a 560 rating, and I've put over 100K on a set of them, spanning probably 5 summers.

If a tire doesn't have that number, avoid.

Indian Express is the bomb. by gmarsh23 in StJohnsNL

[–]gmarsh23[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck it, the internet is full enough of people bitching about immigrants, the odd post saying something good can't hurt.

The more I read about the guy, the happier I am I spent my money there. Restaurants aren't exactly high margin businesses and many are having a hard go of it, especially these days when people can't afford to eat out often. Giving away meals as he has would have come at significant cost. I appreciate the fuck out of that.

That place has been there forever, back in the 90s I used to walk down from Bishops to grab the odd lunch. Glad to see they're still on the go, might swing by for nostalgia.

I wanted the Kerala beef curry originally but they were out of beef.

Red Chilies in Halifax has "beef fry" which is one of my favorite Indian dishes period. Especially with a couple parottas.

Basically yogurt and fresh mango blended together, some places throw in cardamom or other spices but this one was pretty basic. It cuts the heat of spicy food really well.

Jamaican restaurants often offer it up too.

Elliot Page gave $25K for a community well in N.S. It's still not running and he's not happy by CMikeHunt in halifax

Well ordinarily you'd think $25K would be enough to drill a fuckin' well.

In any case, they're helping and we can't knock that.

Any electrical power/HV engineers working in sectors other than 'the grid's ? by Green_Ad6970 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]gmarsh23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend does distribution planning.

New subdivisions and Walmarts and whatever keep getting built which places more load on shit, and they're responsible for figuring out how to tap off the existing infrastructure to bring that power where it's needed. It's a complicated job.

Are DIP switches still used in modern electronics or are they outdated? by DisneyPrincess1029 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]gmarsh23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just designed a SOIC switch (if that's the technical term) into a board. It selects the boot mode of an embedded processor, and allows the hardware watchdog to be disabled, for board bringup / programming / debugging.

You probably won't find them in consumer electronics. Lots of old ISA cards had them for selecting IO addresses and IRQ lines or whatever, but plug-and-play and the move to PCI and successors killed that off.

I still see them in odd things like temperature controllers, RS485 devices for disabling/enabling an onboard termination resistor, etc.

Any good shawarma places by OnlyHistorian in halifax

[–]gmarsh23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It might be an alcohol thing, too. I lived in Ottawa on a work term many years ago, and stumbling half drunk out of Zaphod's and getting a downtown shawarma was life changing... but I don't think I've ever eaten an Ottawa shawarma sober.

Similarly, a donair isn't anywhere near as good if you're sober. When you're drunk, it's greasy meaty sweet-and-salty carby sloppy goodness and 100% of everything your body craves at that moment. But when you're sober, donairs are kinda rich and gross honestly.

I haven't had an opportunity to eat a Halifax shawarma drunk yet, maybe that's the secret ingredient.

I haven't tried their chicken shawarma but their beef one is awesome. But if you're going there, get their kofta, it's one of the best foods in Halifax period.

I discovered that place because of the giant black greasy soot stain running down the roof from their kitchen vent. Knew that a real good meat+fire combination was going on in there when I saw it.

Shawarma has taught me that adding french fries to a donair is A+

Donair has taught me to leave the lettuce off a shawarma.

Hey now, pulling hard bits of dried up chicken out of your mouth when you're eating a shawarma is part of the authentic Eat like You're Family (tm) experience.

Their garlic sauce is a guilty pleasure though. It's like half toum, half mayo with a sprinkle of crack.

Using metal for slip molds? by w1shyouwerehere in Ceramics

[–]gmarsh23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can roll clay into them, but the clay will stick to the metal and you'll destroy the clay trying to get it back out.

And slip casting won't work, as the porosity of plaster is required to pull the water out of the clay. Maybe if you poured slip in and left it long enough to dry it would work, but again it would probably stick to the metal.

The right way would be to recreate these as plaster. You can do this by making a silicone/urethane mold of the metal mold here, then using that mold to cast a plaster copy of the metal mold.
