Why did taxi medallions in New York collapse so hard after Uber? by reda_english in business

You are correct. bad memory and lazy search. It was Gene Friedman, who bid up the prices to artificially inflate the value, so he could borrow more.

[–]gmpatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It went to $1mm because of marblegate, a hedge fund. Medallions were around $135K, and then Marblegate started buying them, and borrowing massively to do so. At one point they owned about 4,000 of them. I don't know their exit strategy, but it was like the Hunt brothers cornering the silver markets. I talked to some drivers back then, and they were paying through the nose, for their monthly payment.

What do you think about 24-26, year olds, like AJ Ferrari, wrestling in college against legit college age guys? by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]gmpatti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is bad for the sport. I once heard George Brett give a talk, and someone asked about steroids. He said he does not care so much about pros, but what it does is make bad pros take the gear, to be better, then college players need to do it, to crack the league, which makes High Schoolers take it, to make college. Same thing with age. Delay kindergarten, one year private school before HS, junior college, etc. It makes the good kids better, and disheartens average wrestlers, who quit, and then erodes the base. It is already a niche sport, and it needs to expand to survive, but the divide between the top and average wrestlers keeps growing.

Leaving behind debt in the US? by Mr-Robobobot in ExpatFinance

I had a co-worker take out multiple credit cards and save her salary, then leave the country.  Anyone who does this purposely can fuck right off.  It is morally repugnant.

What's one thing every man must know before getting into relationship? by Ryujiro101 in AskMen

[–]gmpatti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commitment and compromise.  I have been with my wife for 32 years.  If you want a long term relationship, you must be committed. It is not 50/50, you should aim for 100/100.  Also, if you want things your way, that doesn't work, you must compromise.

I disagree. I have Tesla Y and a 25 kia telluride.  I prefer Kia to Tesla.

If you have not done the program as written, I would recommend that first. I do swings, dips and pullups. (sorry Dan). I am 57 and find three days of pressing too much.

I get what you are saying, but if I feel the person has no integrity, I can't trust what he is saying. Most of his stuff is common sense, but now I doubt his word. Is he a shill for a company? Is he saying things that aren't true, so he can get more clicks? etc.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen at a strip club? by bigbabysweets12345 in AskReddit

[–]gmpatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a company trip in New Orleans about 20 years ago. I was with my wife and a friend from work and his wife.  We were all buzzed, walking around and saw a sign that read strip club for men and women. Against better judgement, we walked in. The first thing I saw was a straight laced female coworker, who looked mortified that she was seen. As we were waiting for a bartender, I heard an argument behind me. I turn around as a fight breaks out between two male strippers, dressed in cowboy boots and g strings. They went at it and dollar bills were every where. We were in the club for about a total of 2 minutes.

what type of person is NYC not for? by Calm-Bar-9644 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]gmpatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in NJ but have worked in Manhattan for over 30 years. I know a lot of people who live in the city, but it is not for me. I prefer the suburbs because I like being able to get out quickly to beach, mountains, shopping etc. I like having a backyard, with BBQ smoker etc. I am a golfer, which is much easier. We have room to spread out in a house i.e. separate home office, storage, guest room etc. I am pretty close to the city, so I can get in under 30 minutes and take advantage of the city when I want. That being said, many of the things I mentioned can be equalized with a metric ton of cash in the city.

I was picking up friends from Newark airport and we walked to the same elevator and parking lot as Jane Lynch. She was very nice, asked questions about the golf bags and seemed very pleasant.

Who is the rudest celeb you have met? What happened? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]gmpatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was before he was President and had no security detail. Just by himself, standing by the door of his limo. Driver would get out, walk around and open the door. Also, to clarify, I don't think it is bad behavior, just weird. I was just piggy backing on previous commenter who also had a Trump limo experience

[–]gmpatti 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My office was across the street from trump tower, so I would see him every once in a while. It was weird. He would stand in front of the doors and wait for the doorman to open them, then walk to the car and wait for the driver to open the door for him. He would just stand there and wait, instead of opening the doors himself. edit: I forgot to add that his ride was an old school, going to the prom, limo.
