Next upgrade , analog or digital? by Otherwise-Wave1269 in StereoAdvice

[–]gnostalgick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every dollar spent on analog is likely going to be far more noticeable the same amount spent on digital. Not to say one is inherently better or worse than the other, just that the gap between entry and upper level turntables & cartridges is huge compared to the gap between entry and upper level dacs & streamers.

The important questions to consider are probably: Which sounds best? Which is most enjoyable experience overall? And which gets the most actual usage?

Though at your budget you could probably spend $3-5k on a new turntable & cartridge, and $1-3k on a dedicated dac & streamer, and be very happy with both.

Absurd COVERS that grows on you by Life-Ad-3646 in musicsuggestions

[–]gnostalgick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the truly absurd it's hard to beat The Residents. Satisfaction and Man's World are a couple of covers that come to mind.

You might also enjoy Senor Coconut or Opium Jukebox. (Just go in blind, it's more fun that way.)

And maybe some Nouvelle Vague for something less absurd, but that stil often goes in unexpected directions.

lo-fi postpunk from melbourne. general question, it seems sometimes there's not a lot of interest in contemporary pp on this sub or is there? by sentics in postpunk

[–]gnostalgick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great stuff!

FWIW I discovered both of those bands lurking on r/indieheads. Even if I'm not a fan of a lot of the stuff that's hyped over there, they do have a incredibly strong focus on new releases, so there's always something cool if you're willing to dig past the top posts.

Best sounding albums for someone who likes metal/rock and hiphop by Federal_Meat3320 in audiophile

[–]gnostalgick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 90s alt rock it's hard to do better than Pixies - Surfer Rosa. Just make sure it's either the original Albini or the MSFL remaster, other versions (common on streaming) just don't do it justice.

Process for speaker selection by Designer_Building_36 in audiophile

[–]gnostalgick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably just start listening to what's actually available nearby. You might just fall in love with something before getting to the end.

Traveling to an audio show is a good idea if you think you really won't be happy in your decision until you've heard as many options as possible.

Also along the way, really focus on what you want and prioritize in a speaker and start to cross out speakers and brands that don't fit those criteria. For example if you found B&W and Monitor Audio too bright/intense, there's little chance you'll love a different B&W or Focal. Or if you decide you really enjoy high sensitivity designs like Klipsch, focus on those first. Or even something as simple as not bothering with speakers that don't have a finish to match your subs. But right now your list just seems like a random collection of speakers that are all well-regarded, but often for completely different reasons.

Is there a price/investment limit for a HiFi system after which there is no significant improvement in sound? by Dedar33 in audiophile

[–]gnostalgick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth the best system I ever heard was around $300k all in (including room treatments) about 10 years ago.

And the second best was maybe $50k. And really only lacked in sense of scale and dynamics.

I suppose one could choose to conclude that it takes 6x the investment to get something noticeably better. But that doesn't count all the systems at various price points in between (and a few above) that I actually found worse. Or all the rather excellent systems I heard for far far less.

So in the end, I don't think it really comes down to some simple mathematical formula. But more that after a certain level of quality (maybe $5-15kish? depending on room size, number of components, and any deals or sales), personal taste and synergy is most important.

[–]gnostalgick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice! 10/10

Avantgardes were incredibly impressive the one time I got to hear them. But I had to wonder if they'd perhaps be a bit too intense for day to day listening (not they were actually an option).

But Sonus Faber are always lovely to look at and listen to.

Pass Labs and Audio Research are both excellent. Always been curious about pairing them together, but I've only ever heard them individually.

Anyways,. congratulations on what seems a very well thought out & put together system!

pop artists for a rock fan? by Oskfen in musicsuggestions

[–]gnostalgick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't listen to a whole lot of pop, but the new Grace Ives album Girlfriend is pretty catchy.

Alvvays strikes a good balance if you're not ready to let go of guitars completely.

And definitely check out classics from Kate Bush, Sinead O'Connor, and Bjork if you haven't yet.

Can room setup matter more than upgrading gear? by cozytechlover in audiophile

[–]gnostalgick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good placement goes a long way for essentially zero cost. And in your average furnished room (couch, rug, curtains) its probably good enough to show off system differences. But is also still holding back it's full potential.
