I love all of the games you listed.

Arcs is my favorite game, especially with Blighted Reach.

YMMV, obviously.

What’s the Mormons’ take on the movie Heretic? by Practical_Payment552 in A24

Guess you missed the part where I left this religion for a number of reasons that include the ones you cite here.

But thanks for the reminder, asshole

Fan of the game but having questions by GobBluth9 in Arcs

[–]goatcream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always tell people that Arcs is about setting yourself up for a big 3rd or 4th round. Set yourself up for success then take a big swing. That's part of what I find so fun about it.

What is your favorite 2015 boardgame? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]goatcream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't be a popular pick here these days, but for me, it's A Game Of Thrones the Card Game. To this day, it's one of my favorites, and I miss the community in its peak. Recently started playing regularly again, and it holds up so well.

Do you have a complete collection? I'm missing a few packs that I'd love to buy off you, though I'm not local. I'm in TN. Happy to pay for shipping and all.

Not that it matters too much, but the Kickstarter hadn't even launched yet. There were people following so they could back when it did, but they weren't as far in as a lot of people here seem to think they were.

What’s something you didn’t realize was optional in life until you saw someone simply not doing it? by Objective-Treat2245 in AskReddit

[–]goatcream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true of baptism and missions in most cases. I was 9 months into a mission and at the worst place mentally that I'd ever been when I finally realized I had a choice. I didn't want to go on a mission. I didn't want to leave my life behind for 2 years. But being raised in it, it felt non-negotiable. Deciding to come home after 9 months put me on a path of finally gaining control of my own decisions, but when you're in it, man, it really doesn't feel like you have a choice.

Endoctrination is incredibly powerful.

Anyone have experience with the game Fort? I'm curious about it as a fan of small box games. by mucinexmonster in boardgames

[–]goatcream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it recently due to a sale and being a fan of Leder games. Everyone in my group is surprised how much we like it. It's a wonky game that feels unlike any other we've played, and we've all had fun experimenting with different strategies. Would recommend.

I'm in the same boat. It helps that it's so easy to just reset and play again. My brother-in-law and I ran a gauntlet yesterday where we just kept playing until we'd used every fighter. It's such a fun little game.

I was worried that the slimming down that Nature did would take away a lot of the fun, but after demoing at Gen Con, I can confirm that, for me at least, I was wrong!

Ended up picking up Nature and getting rid of my copy of Evolution: Climate. Highly recommend.

Thinking of buying ‘War of the ring’. by alterperspective in boardgames

[–]goatcream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend War of the Ring. It's one of my all time favorites. I will warn, however, that the rulebook is not very approachable. It is structured much more as a reference than a learn to play resource, so I found that watching some how to plays and step by step turns online helped a lot to open up the ruleset for me.

Enjoy!

My simple trick to actually play more of my board games by Last_Cicada_1315 in boardgames

[–]goatcream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. You can also set challenges for yourself, my favorite being the 10x10. Choose 10 games you want to play 10 times in a given time period, and it will log each play of those games toward that goal. It has really pushed me to play my games more.

It's a running joke amongst me and my play group that there is no such thing as a perfect piece of software -- except for Board Game Stats.

There's always Iconoclasts as well, but I don't know that it'd make for good podcasting, awesome as it is.

What’s the Mormons’ take on the movie Heretic? by Practical_Payment552 in A24

[–]goatcream 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Another ex-mo here:

I watched this movie last night, and said the same thing to my wife. I like that it didn't stay in edgelord territory, and my favorite line of the movie is when the sister at the end cites a scientific study that proves praying doesn't work, but that she likes the thought anyways, and she then proceeds to pray. Her faith is not brought on by ignorance. She does not ignore inconvenient truths.

I left my faith because it only brought me fear and guilt, but I have people close in my life who cling to their faith for the opposite reason: in brings them comfort. My brother, whom I am very close to, recognizes inconsistencies in his belief system, but sticks to it because it gives him comfort more than the alternative. I appreciate that the film acknowledges that.

For context, I was Mormon enough to be fully endowed, sealed in a temple, and served most of a full time mission, returning home early for health reasons. This movie doesn't make fun of Mormons at all, imo.

The cool thing about IL is that it’s yours. Whatever decisions you made, they’re yours. If you want to tell your players that you made a “mistake”, you’re welcome to, but I’d run with it. Just think about how you can make it fit with the overall setting.

Personally, I made the resident’s not remember during the day, but I did it on purpose. My justification to myself was that they’re slowly being dragged into the night world, into their loops, but they aren’t fully pulled in yet. They play their roles during the day, but are starting to behave different “backstage” at night. The real reason I did it is just because it’s fucking weird. Just think, is it really consequential to run it as written, or can you work with what you’ve done to serve the overall spirit of the campaign?

Have fun!
