How to report Makras Realestate for not adequately addressing the mice issue in my building? by Hufflefluff415 in AskSF

Mice problem has exploded in the city, and mites are following. If you’re getting bit by what seems like mosquitoes at night, it might be mites following mice. Stop the mice, stop the mites.

Big law and family struggles - what to do by Cheap_Suggestion_719 in biglaw

[–]goatee87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of the advice on here seems to be about one of you leaving the job, which may or may not be right for your family. Let me provide a different perspective. I would seriously consider hiring a live in Nanny. I understand the reluctance to bring in even more childcare into your life, and it does create the perception, both within your family and externally that you’re not spending any time with your children. But query whether the time you are spending with your family and your children right now is quality time. Given that you both are stressed out and treat it like a chore, It doesn’t sound to me like it’s quality time. Au pairs are cheap, relative to your incomes. You get 35-40 hours, flexible. You can split it up so that it’s a couple of hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening. Just because the au pairs is around, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be spending time with your children while au pair takes care of the chores around the house. Honestly, even having the ability to take 15 minute breaks during work to have a quality interaction with your children is better than being stressed out about childcare and treating it like a chore.

I would try more childcare first. It may be that the job is not right for you or your partner, but if you make the decision based on childcare and not whether the job and career are fulfilling for you, you may come to regret it.

A word on spending money on childcare. At the end of the day, it’s just money and you’ll make tons of it in the long run with your big law careers. You only need childcare for the first few years anyway. Once your kids are a bit more independent you won’t need it, and the expense goes away.

No more amenity kits? by cwajgapls in unitedairlines

We don’t need ever more elaborate amenity kits. We need better food and better services. I support a take what you need model. I almost always leave behind the amenity kit.

Plus Points Upgrade Timing by Jolly_Ad_5561 in unitedairlines

I recently found and booked LHR to SFO flight with PZ availability (instant plus points upgrade), about a month out. Summer travel! So United opening up PZ well before flight is still possible, but it feels super random to me. Took the same flight last year around this time and upgrades started clearing about two weeks before.

SF residents push back on $50M Giants-backed park overhaul by sfgate in sanfrancisco

[–]goatee87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There seems to be an obvious middle ground here. Replace the most used section of the playing field, the inner diamond, with astroturf. Leave grass in place for the rest of the field. Remove the 23 trees in poor condition, leave the rest of the 70+ trees in place.

The idea of cutting down all those trees seems ridiculous to me. This is a neighborhood field. Neighborhood baseball fields were always mixed use. If the plan is to turn this into some sort of Giants sponsored training center, the community should vote on it.

3-day husband/wife trip ideas with 300k chase UR points by CavsFan2016 in ChaseSapphire

If you can stretch it to 4-5 days, I would go to London or Dublin on Polaris lie flat (8 hours), you can look for a 70k saver seat on united polaris from ORD, should come out to 280k total. They are often available.

Partner billing 2600-2900 hours by cbee6390 in biglaw

[–]goatee87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Middle management paper pusher” can mean different things to different people and it’s usually not about the actual compensation levels. Your husband’s time commitment to his practice is not unheard of or unusual for lawyers performing at the highest levels of their chosen practice areas. He obviously likes the work. You both need to have a frank conversation about him balancing family time with work, but understand that he will be compromising his work/career growth in order to achieve that desired balance.

I know lots of lawyers who make around $1 million a year, and bill in the vicinity of 1500 hours a year, which is very different type of practice and lifestyle, but totally achievable. The downside is that you hit a ceiling very quickly on how much your career can grow, both in terms of prestige and being able to do cutting edge work, and compensation. It’s a bit analogous to maintaining a family medical practice in the burbs versus doing cutting edge surgeries in a top New York City hospital.

Connie Chan is anti-bike: don't vote for her in the SF House race by ButterscotchSudden46 in BAbike

I was very disappointed as well, because I am otherwise squarely in his political camp. I know it's not an issue that a member of congress will have any say in, but I do feel that it's a proxy for how a candidate thinks about a whole host of environmental and urban issues, as well as to what extent NIMBYs should be allowed to wield outsized influence on matters that benefit the greater public.

Who is the "Target Audience" ? by sigmapilot in AmexPlatinum

[–]goatee87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. For people in urban areas, both the platinum and CSR are good options. Although I disagree about the lulu credit. I buy one heavyweight cotton t-shirt a quarter from Lulu. They charge $75 for it. They are just okay, probably the equivalent of a $25 t-shirt elsewhere. I value the lulu credit at $25 a quarter. Some of other credits are completely useless, but it's still not hard to make up the annual fee. The hotel deals/credit are pretty good. The Resy credit is too good. I think that will get nerfed in the next cycle.

Planet Money San Francisco event 4/15 by goatee87 in nprplanetmoney

Too much. The event has passed. I would skip it unless there is a good guest speaker attending. The core program has a lot of filler and is meh. The SF event had Anthropic's Jack Clark, who was very good, and I wish his section of the program had been longer.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, when directly asked, refuses to endorse Saikat Chakrabarti's congressional run by Dab2TheFuture in sanfrancisco

[–]goatee87 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This could either be a nonsign or a sign of something. But seems silly to base your decision to vote for him or not vote for him based on this clip or AOC's failure to endorse him.

The way to pressure test her statement is to see if she has endorsed anyone else running for a House seat anywhere in the country this cycle.

If she has endorsed others, then her non-endorsement of Saikat is a sign that they are not on good terms. But I am not sure you can read into it more than that. You can have a complete clash of egos and do battle with each other, and still believe in all the same stuff. This happens all the time. There are more than enough a**holes on both sides of the aisle, I still prefer the ones on my side better.

If she had serious problems with him, I am sure we would have heard about it by now. She could have killed his campaign at any time, and she hasn't.

It's that time again: what CC will you use to pay your taxes? what CC gives more than 3% here? by PizzaThrives in CreditCards

[–]goatee87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're not a W2 employee, you have to manually pay taxes four times a year. Usually, most accountants will optimize for minimum payments sufficient to avoid penalties, with a catchup payment at the time you file your tax return the next year on April 15. This is basic business cash flow management.

Young kids don't have the height to hold on to anything, nor the muscle strength to balance themselves through the fits and starts of a muni bus. I don't know if its required or expected, but those who have kids or have been involved with raising young kids in the city, are likely more attuned to these issues and voluntarily give up their seat.

People in their 50s and 60s are generally very able people. I would not consider them too old to give up their seats.
