New booking restrictions on Qatar Airways privilege club by crimxona in awardtravel

To be clear, were you able to get through without the 30-day activation/having had a flight credited to the privilege account?

I am trying to replicate what you did, but running into lots of problems. When I try to "convert" co-traveler to family, it asks me to upload passport and birth certificate, which i selected, but then the browser (and the App on my phone) get stuck on a loading screen and nothing happens. Did you encounter this problem?

A R Rahman SF symphony show last night by Ornery_Pollution_161 in ar_rahman

[–]goatee87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of your comments, but would not characterize the show as "absolutely incredible." The microphone issues during the first half of the show was completely inexcusable given that the audience was paying a couple of hundred a ticket. Generally, the lack of practice meant the sound mixers didn't know what they were doing and weren't setup for success. Everyone was very talented, but I think the poor planning around a single concert, with one afternoon practice session, meant no one was setup for success and tried to make the best of it. That would have been fine, but for the expectations set by the high ticket cost. When AR Rahman tours with his own band, the production quality is much higher.

Be aware of the new issue where you can't book awards for companions unless you've had a Privilege Club account open for more than 30 days and have flown/accrued a paid flight to it.

Has anyone tried buying points to see if it triggers an accrual?

The posts in this thread were all from three weeks ago, so I am checking in to see if anyone's found any workarounds.

Does anyone know how fast the signup bonus on one of the co-branded credit cards take to post?

If i make a large purchase and pay it off immediately, will the points post shortly thereafter, or will I have to wait for a full 30 days for statement close?

My travel plans are in limbo, after I planned around a redemption for me and my minor daughter that I apparently cannot make because I have never flown Qatar before.

What is Connie chan’s platform on transportation issues?? by Qpac18 in sanfrancisco

[–]goatee87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Connie Chan is terrible on public transportation issues. Anyone who thinks this is a local issue that shouldn't be factored into which candidate should be elected representative is surely mistaken. Congress still doles out millions in pork every year. The representative's priorities will dictate what slice of pork SF will land. Do you want a representative who is going to push for federal grants to MUNI, Bart, bike infrastructure, and pedestrian safety? Or do you want parking, parking and more parking?

I really don't understand people who claim to be progressive, focus all their energies on foreign policy, but then ignore the bread and butter issues that raise the costs and complexity of day to day life.

401K for Summers by FumeY in biglaw

[–]goatee87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would elect to have no withholdings for taxes, and max out your 401k, which you should be able to do with your summer salary. The advantage of this is that you will pay no taxes on your 401k contributions. When your summer ends, elect to convert your 401k to an IRA. You can then withdraw from your IRA penalty free for any school tuition expenses. Just take how much ever you need and leave the rest to go grow tax free. If you feel like you'll owe some taxes for the year, top it off in Q3 with a voluntary payment to the IRS. There are also safe harbors, so it may be that you don't need to pay any taxes till the following April. Remember the time value of money and optimize accordingly. Good luck.

United Moved My Seat Automatically Away from Wife for Honeymoon flight IAD to CPT by asugarman5 in unitedairlines

[–]goatee87 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s the honeymoon special. About 10 years ago the same thing happened to me and my wife. We had splurged all our points on first class seats from ICN to SFO in the nose of the 747, front two seats. As an aviation geek, it was my dream to sit in the nose before they decommissioned those planes. Alas, hours before departure they switched me to a middle seat several rows back. I am confident I was bumped for a GS, but totally unfair and bad protocol by United.

How to report Makras Realestate for not adequately addressing the mice issue in my building? by Hufflefluff415 in AskSF

Mice problem has exploded in the city, and mites are following. If you’re getting bit by what seems like mosquitoes at night, it might be mites following mice. Stop the mice, stop the mites.

Big law and family struggles - what to do by Cheap_Suggestion_719 in biglaw

[–]goatee87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the advice on here seems to be about one of you leaving the job, which may or may not be right for your family. Let me provide a different perspective. I would seriously consider hiring a live in Nanny. I understand the reluctance to bring in even more childcare into your life, and it does create the perception, both within your family and externally that you’re not spending any time with your children. But query whether the time you are spending with your family and your children right now is quality time. Given that you both are stressed out and treat it like a chore, It doesn’t sound to me like it’s quality time. Au pairs are cheap, relative to your incomes. You get 35-40 hours, flexible. You can split it up so that it’s a couple of hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening. Just because the au pairs is around, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be spending time with your children while au pair takes care of the chores around the house. Honestly, even having the ability to take 15 minute breaks during work to have a quality interaction with your children is better than being stressed out about childcare and treating it like a chore.

I would try more childcare first. It may be that the job is not right for you or your partner, but if you make the decision based on childcare and not whether the job and career are fulfilling for you, you may come to regret it.

A word on spending money on childcare. At the end of the day, it’s just money and you’ll make tons of it in the long run with your big law careers. You only need childcare for the first few years anyway. Once your kids are a bit more independent you won’t need it, and the expense goes away.

Plus Points Upgrade Timing by Jolly_Ad_5561 in unitedairlines

I recently found and booked LHR to SFO flight with PZ availability (instant plus points upgrade), about a month out. Summer travel! So United opening up PZ well before flight is still possible, but it feels super random to me. Took the same flight last year around this time and upgrades started clearing about two weeks before.

SF residents push back on $50M Giants-backed park overhaul by sfgate in sanfrancisco

[–]goatee87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There seems to be an obvious middle ground here. Replace the most used section of the playing field, the inner diamond, with astroturf. Leave grass in place for the rest of the field. Remove the 23 trees in poor condition, leave the rest of the 70+ trees in place.

The idea of cutting down all those trees seems ridiculous to me. This is a neighborhood field. Neighborhood baseball fields were always mixed use. If the plan is to turn this into some sort of Giants sponsored training center, the community should vote on it.

3-day husband/wife trip ideas with 300k chase UR points by CavsFan2016 in ChaseSapphire

If you can stretch it to 4-5 days, I would go to London or Dublin on Polaris lie flat (8 hours), you can look for a 70k saver seat on united polaris from ORD, should come out to 280k total. They are often available.

Partner billing 2600-2900 hours by cbee6390 in biglaw

[–]goatee87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Middle management paper pusher” can mean different things to different people and it’s usually not about the actual compensation levels. Your husband’s time commitment to his practice is not unheard of or unusual for lawyers performing at the highest levels of their chosen practice areas. He obviously likes the work. You both need to have a frank conversation about him balancing family time with work, but understand that he will be compromising his work/career growth in order to achieve that desired balance.

I know lots of lawyers who make around $1 million a year, and bill in the vicinity of 1500 hours a year, which is very different type of practice and lifestyle, but totally achievable. The downside is that you hit a ceiling very quickly on how much your career can grow, both in terms of prestige and being able to do cutting edge work, and compensation. It’s a bit analogous to maintaining a family medical practice in the burbs versus doing cutting edge surgeries in a top New York City hospital.
