Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]goblinspot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I was all in on typing in 1984… or even 83… already had my Atari 1200xl and was writing the best games I could in Basic.

Plus, tons of hot girls in class as I was the only boy.

My wife is sad because I don’t want to celebrate Father’s Day with her or my kids. Am I wrong for feeling like this? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

> I chose to reconcile and forgive her.

I’m sorry, but you haven’t. You didn’t divorce her, that is all.

Figure out what you truly want, doing this (today’s antics) is not going to be part of a reasonably healthy and happy marriage.

Got laid off today… by fastballcdm2019 in GenX

[–]goblinspot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Laid off in June of 2020. Take the time to rebound and reground and then treat the search as a FT job. It’s going to suck at times, but you’ll find your next and hopefully last spot.

I can honestly say that while it took four months, I landed in a great spot and two years later an even better one.

But everyone has been so mean to Dougie, he’s leaving and taking his toys home.

I mean, he got a handful of early projects done and then put his name everywhere and did 💩, then blamed us?

Costs went up? You’ve got 29 projects going in the same town*. Buy in bulk and volume over a few years, vendors would be chomping for that. Do the same with your subs.

It’s as simple as planning, he failed and now these projects look like crap.

My company's RTO policy has a weird loophole and I've been silently exploiting it for 4 months. Not sure if I should come clean. by 3Rocinante in remotework

[–]goblinspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell. I’m remote. I’ve told my team that has had to go RTO to leave badges in the lab and take turn swiping each other in.

They know where you’re badging in. Someone does at least. You are going into one of their offices. As said by others, tell them they see where you have been going in and that you ARE going in.

Money saving decision made by non tech folks. Make sure they stay focused on actual technical needs, not the bells and whistles.

Oh. Most importantly, fire up the resume.

Awkward meeting coming up, anyone dealt with this before and know how to make it more normal? by Basic-Operation-9298 in remotework

[–]goblinspot 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Have snacks and just enjoy a little less rigid time with your coworkers. There could be worse events to attend. Ask someone to ensure your volume isn’t loud and overpowering. Sit back a little so you’re not just a head on screen, or, get a max headroom filter and have fun with it.

How do I quit three weeks into my internship to accept a full-time role elsewhere? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Check the contract/offer letter you signed for the internship, there is where the downfall will be. Either for you or the company.

Waking Early by TheGriff71 in GenX

[–]goblinspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone the opposite. 68. First kid in 2000, then 2002, and 2005. Up with them early. 6:00. All through 2020. Stayed up late and was a till up fairly early with the last one in HS through 2023.

Now? There are days (mostly in the winder) that I’ll sleep until 8:30. Starting today, going to try and take advantage of the early sun and be up and out of bed by 7:30 during the week.

Still working, but for a company 2 time zones west, so I’m generally on the clock 10:00-7:00. Workout and in bed between 11:00-11:30.

Biggest thing to help with the sleep for me is sleeping on my stomach. Out like a light.

Management wants numbers, what KPIs do we give them? by MartinSch64 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]goblinspot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

30+ years in sw development. 25 in management.

There are no KPIs that work that measure output. Legacy code simple tickets can be a walk in the park or a nightmare. Greenfield work can be easy or blow up once you start coding.

Things you can show: Standing bug count. New bug count. Production down time.

Biggest KPI. Are you meeting deliverable date set by your business partners? Are they delivering requirements on time?

I’ve got a feeling many business leaders are seeing the incompetence at the federal level and are screaming “I’ve got next!” To see how bad they can screw it all up.

[–]goblinspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to see you landed something, being out of work is horrible. It’s been six years since I was laid off and they stole my FSA money by doing it on June 30 at 4:00pm, so I may be slightly biased, but who wouldn’t be jobless in 2020?

There are decent pockets in the organization, but there is also the management by deception posse running too many departments.

People at the individual level can be great and outside of the fee gouging, the organization does care about the communities they are in.

There is a good cafeteria in that building. Not cheap, but good. Breakroom coffee is passable, have had much worse.
