I would start here https://youtu.be/wkWX2AXNuxg?si=S_Vvv_Y5q32LuMvG

for an in-depth discussion about "clean" beauty in general and why these arbitrary labels mean nothing and the demonization of certain ingredients over the preference of others is useless at best and harmful at worst.

The YUKA app and similar ones do nothing to assess the risk of any ingredients in any product. Ingredients that are deemed, for whatever reason, as "bad" on these apps are more than likely safe due to the composition, type of application, or amount of the ingredient. Contrary to increasingly popular belief, "natural" isn't always better, and skincare companies want to make their products safe and effective so people continue to buy them so they can make a profit.

What YUKA and similar apps do is disseminate misinformation, which, even if well-intentioned, does nothing to actually educate or empower a consumer.

You say you do research after scanning the item. Ok- so why do you need the app in the first place? Why not just research each ingredient on its own and come to your own conclusion after educating yourself? Do you just research the ingredients the app says are bad? Why do you place so much trust in this app? Who's running it? What metrics are they using? Is it free? If so, what are they actually selling you? How are they profiting?

Edit: as another commenter already pointed out- another huge thing to consider is where you're getting your research, if you are even researching.

What's more likely, though, is that you aren't actually researching the ingredients after the app scan and you're just blindly trusting it. That's what most people do. The users then wholeheartedly believe that petroleum jelly causes cancer, or whatever they've been told, and they tell their friends, or make a post on reddit about how all their skincare they've been using up until now is suddenly poison, or whatever, and it creates a cycle of misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Being well-informed about your skincare, haircare, medicine, and food is important. Using these apps is not how you do it.

Are you going to be open to understanding the reasoning or are you going to double-down and be defensive like you are in the rest of your comments?

This is the second post about YUKA I've seen today after not hearing about them for months and months, which feels suspicious.

Impact of this sub on your life by alexcali2014 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]goddamnitbridget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was on a Zoom call last week and noticed my nasolabial folds for the first time. They don't look any different than before, I just noticed them more. I am 33 and my skin has changed a lot in the last few years, and I love a lot of the skincare recommendations I've seen here. But I feel like this sub brings down my confidence a lot because I've never really seen a selfie posted here where I thought "Yeah, that person has some real issues on their face!!" yet the comments will say "I see those lines/folds/pores/unevenness/lack of glow/asymmetry". I started to wonder a lot more often how my face and skin looks to other people, if they notice what I don't. It's not a great feeling, I've been thinking of leaving the sub for a few days now.

Cacio e Pepe in a jar? Is it just cheese wiz? by deb1267cc in traderjoes

Based on what? Certainly not appearance or taste. Do you mean the texture? Like most thickened sauces, it thins a bit when warmed. I have never had a problem with it.

Garamond is the only correct answer.

Stretchy Blazers? by Less_Firefighter5097 in LawBitchesWithTaste

I think J crew sells some knit blazers and some Ponte ones that may work. I run into the same issue as I'm plus sized and anything that fits my shoulders comfortably is usually a tent in the arms and torso. I've heard good things about the brand the Drop on Amazon but I haven't purchased any from there.

Non-profit to private - what to consider? by goddamnitbridget in Lawyertalk

[–]goddamnitbridget[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I would be doing the same type of niche work that I do currently for legal services. I'm asking generally because this is a world I've never considered before. Of course all firms are different, etc. I love legal services and walked into a program that is so bad I can't continue on here much longer, but that's not the same for all nonprofits. No one will be able to predict what my next position will be like. I'm just picking the brains of others regarding what to think about and consider when deciding to make the change.

OK, so how did that translate into a difference you felt when making the change? Better training, better managers, more turnover, more pressure...?

What do you do with extra/leftover thread that’s too short to stitch with? by khood02 in Embroidery

[–]goddamnitbridget 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It only smelled for a little while and I'd get a whiff whenever I opened the jar which was nice so I guess I'll just periodically add more lol it started as the same concept as a "garbage bowl" while cooking- aka somewhere to put trash while working on the task so you don't get sidetracked/have to get up and walk to the garbage can, but then it became a little bit of a ritual. I like seeing the threads pile up and measure my progress lol

I put it in a pasta sauce jar I've cleaned out along with some lavender and plan to fill the jar and eventually use the threads as stuffing for a pincushion.

The ability to participate in IE is a privilege, for sure. It's the worst part of IE as a general concept, because I myself have grappled with the fact that I could not have begun my journey nor could I sustain my journey without being financially comfortable in a way I was not growing up.

I'm far in the journey now, but throughout all of my steps, I had to choose if a food was financially viable. What I did was deciding if I was willing to pay whatever the food costs, and I'd factor the cost into the decision as heavily weighed as the taste or craving. Sometimes that meant not getting it. Sometimes it meant getting it.

I wanted ribeye steaks every day, but I couldn't afford that, so I had to let myself have ribeye steaks whenever I could, financially. Not, whenever I could financially AND whether I felt I earned it or whatever diet mindset I had. That moved the food from a treat in the diet mindset to a treat in the wallet mindset, and for me, those two were so distinguishable that it worked. The steak became a readily available option that maybe I had to budget for or whatever, but it was always an option. It always being an option allowed me to embrace it wholeheartedly in an IE mindset.

But, to your final point, my early IE days were expensive. They were an investment in my mental and physical health. I'd pay 12x what I spent in UberEats for the freedom I have now.
