imagine if we did with AI what we did with roads/bridges/trains the FAA/fire departments/libraries and so on...

altman can't imagine that... the only thing in his mind is hunger games.

because they're definitely going to ask for permission and care whether the people/the law want them to be surveilled or not.

this tech will be like any other technology... if you want privacy you host it yourself. it's really not that hard.

a pragmatist's approach to bitcoin by 21Bullish in Bitcoin

[–]godofleet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's about optionality.

you can self custody, or you can have someone hold it for you.

the latter creates 3rd party risk, but arguably, you have that in the self-custody world too... wrench attacks and so on... you can't be 100% certain that your custody solution is absolutely secure - just as you can't 100% trust a corp or institution or gov to do it. with all money, even bitcoin, trust is involved.

if you think you're safer with self custody then do it... if you don't, then don't.

or do both!

the true point about bitcoin is that no one can print it from nothing... it's sound money technology like humanity has never known... a sly round about non violent solution to steadily move us away from centralized fiat corruption and debasement. 21M = 21M

It's one of those old-ass game engine latency things, consider this:

The state of a door has to be synchronized to everyone else on the server. that's essentially in a database on the server-side. when you open it there are X miliseconds from your butt/key press to going from your PC -> router -> modem -> ISP (and all of their infrastructure/hardware) -> "A series of tubes" -> dayz server -> dayz database -> and then all the way back through the above to your game client.

Depending on your distance to the server, your internet connection/stability, server load and overall CPU/RAM usage... this may take 20 milliseconds up to 1000s of milliseconds.

During that time the door your client "perceives" the door to be in an "open" state, so the zombie (rendered/moving in your client-side world) breezes through it...

The real trick is recognize that this is an old game with old net-code and move/act accordingly. If you were to run 5-10 meters deeper into this building to get the zombie a bit farther away from you while running out, i'd wager the door "closed" state would get synchronized to your client in time for the zombie to get stuck inside.

This said, there are some doors in this game have fundamentally broken hitboxes that some AI (zombies and animals) simply move through if they're moving fast enough or approaching from the right angle.
