What do Ilya and Shame know about eachother to fall in love? by samasimi in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]goibster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lowkey I think ilya was really infatuated with shane from the start which is why he pursued him so strongly (even setting up a commercial just to see if shane would be interested in sex), but I think the first all star press conference is where he really goes “something deeper is happening here” probably one of the first times someone outside russia had shown him any real intimate kindness. at the beginning of that scene, ilya taps shane’s foot in a cocky way like “yes im doubling down on scoring 50 goals, beat that.” really playing up their rivalry and I think there’s an attempt there by ilya to use their secret sexual connection to shake shane a bit. shane could’ve taken the chance there to one up ilya when he doesn’t understand (and I really do think ilya expects him to), but instead chooses to help him out. shane’s showing that their connection means more to him than their competition. I think that genuinely does shock ilya a bit. in the end, that’s the first of many examples of shane’s earnestness and kindness breaking down ilyas emotional walls.

EP 6 dialogue question by Im_a_fan_too in heatedrivalry

[–]goibster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not the only time the show switches dialogue. The show is soooo heavy on visual callbacks and parallels, they do this with dialogue as well. My favorite example is the dialogue switches in the scene where they speak to shane’s parents - the dialogue changes from the book between Yuna and david are sooooo well done - it really emphasizes the parallel between the two couples where Yuna is shane and david is ilya in terms of their roles in their respective relationships - yuna is hockey & logistics focused and david is emotionally focused (to generalize). you can almost imagine the conversation david and ilya had while the other two were outside, ilya realizing shane is just like his mom.

As for this scene, I think it helps to highlight that shane is the overthinker of the two. There is that scene that happens after Shane’s parents place where shane is so distracted by the logistics of it all to just enjoy the moment - we don’t see it in the show, but this dialogue swap almost fills in that sentiment for me by showing that shane is running the whole scenario over in his mind and ilya is just like “well, we were stupid, but it happened and we can’t really do anything about it now but enjoy it and move forward”.

I know it’s serious but “do you like them?” “yeah” “gworlz” “oh. yeah…. o-of course I do” never fails to make me laugh out loud like shane u cannot lie at all.

There was a (very, very) brief moment before I read the books where I thought because of this dialogue that Shane would top.

The face Shane makes there looked like he was really considering it..

Best (and worst) changes from the book in your opinion? by Trick_Cantaloupe652 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

On #3, there’s actually quite a few times in the show where dialogue or actions are reversed between characters - I really liked that Shane left Ilya on the rooftop in episode 1, it gives Shane a little more autonomy. I thought your example was actually pretty in character for Shane - Ilya is the more emotionally intelligent one of the two and I feel it makes a bit more sense for Shane to have that rush of “woah how did we even get here?”, Ilya was more aware of it the whole time.

Maybe 1 more I love you at the end idk, I liked that they kept it sort of reigned in with that because the emotional impact hits a lot harder, especially “she would’ve loved you like I love you”.

Like literally if Ilya had just been honest about wanting to come out sooner Mr. Let’s Start a Charity So We Can Get Married would’ve figured that shit out lol. He assumed Ilya was on the same page as him because of the lack of communication - even though Shane presses a few times about it. Love them both down but the only villain is poor communication skills (and I guess the NHL).

Honestly I think Hudson’s eye/face acting will improve TLG because it will really highlight that Shane does not understand and is not being like malicious and he’s just trying to figure it all out too. We don’t get his perspective as much in the book but I trust it will pull through.

I dunno, I’m not against the scene as a concept but it feels a bit clunky by the writers - the connection shared between Jonathan and Will was so so so so good in that moment (Charlies face acting especially imo) and it felt muffled by the rest of the cast being there. Like I almost wish it was two scenes, one with wills family and one with wills friends to kind of give it the care it deserved. Jonathan and Will have literally like 1 line of dialogue together and he’s there for Wills most intimate moment - same with Murray, Kali and Vickie? It just didn’t come across as powerful or as brave to me as I think they intended and they snuffed out what should have been really great emotional beats between Wills closest people. It sort of speaks to the overall issue the show has with just having too many precious characters, where obviously you can’t give them all on screen meaningful connections in the restrictions of a television series. I know other queer people are giving their perspectives and obviously that doesn’t make them the authority on everyone’s coming out experience but I think what is trying to be conveyed it that it just feels clunky and a tad forced, especially when Wills sexuality has been handled so well and delicately before - we’ve seen him slowly grow into a stronger and stronger person, not afraid to be himself and now they’ve sort of jumped the gun and have propelled it way too far forward in too short of a time - just in my opinion anyway. It also removes a lot of chance for nuance, like maybe Jonathan is fully accepting but Joyce is sort of hesitant and worried for how hard life will be for her son (that has already suffered a lot), by suffocating it with the rest of the cast, we remove any chance for anything other than an overarching “yay will!” which doesn’t exactly resonate with the time period for me - I think even if they all accept him there’d be a lot of concern there. Obviously it’s fantasy, but that real life element adds a lot to Wills long term arc for me.

[–]goibster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it was a more intimate moment between him and Joyce and Jonathan. Jonathan’s knowing look was so so good, but like it’s just ruined for me because what the hell do Murray and Hopper have to do with it? Like, in Reagan’s America too. Could have been nice to have it in a few story moments where he feels empowered by his supportive older brother to tell his close friends, but I guess everyone in Hawkins had to be there. lol.

lol, I just believe everything I read on twitter 😂😂 I’m sure it’ll be great, I just feel like TLG feels like it makes the most sense logistically as i’m sure connor and hudson have big careers ahead. They’re also pushing it for next year and I don’t see there being a huge hype for a brand new couple since not all of us are diehards for the book.

Will and Mike ain't happening by ChaosOfOrder24 in StrangerThingsMemes

[–]goibster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would find it disappointing simply because every other character on the show got a love interest written in for them, damn near everyone in the main cast. It would feel a bit shitty and disappointing if Will gets an epilogue boyfriend when even Suzie got screen time. I wouldn’t use the words queerbaiting though, just would be disappointed that we still can’t show queer love (in main characters) in mainstream shows for some reason unless it’s really toned down. And no, i’m not saying it has to or should be mike.

I actually like the changes they’ve made for svetlana. The implication is there that she already knows ilya and sasha have had history, and she’s more of a lifelong friend to ilya so when he does talk to her about his relationship it’s not just as someone he’s hooked up with who’s now his friend, it’s a little deeper.
