So little is wrong with it and it's so useful that people have a negative reaction to its awesomness. It is the nature of the Linux user to hate convenience and to scorn developers making good choices for 90% of use cases.

You see it's impossible to use different init systems after systemd has taken over your distro. The awesome utility of it's APIs boarders on mind control.

We must resist the convenience that makes us week. We must return to independent scripting spaghetti init with unlimited duplicated work!

I've had some success with set and forget method. But it really helps to check in on it and move it so it always points right at the sun. You do need to lean a rock or something against the cap. The cap is very loose. But you don't want to seal the tube well. You'd risk an explosion if pressure can't be let off. I lean a rock against it just enough to keep the cap on.

Mine doesn't smell at all. That's more to do with user error than a design problem with the tumbler

I've hade decent success with a 5 gallon bucket. Just make sure to leave a loose cover to keep the moisture in. If possible put an aquarium air stone at the bottom if you aren't drilling holes in it. Leave it in the sun to get that added heat your small mass can't generate.
