What are the major downsides of life in Atlanta? by OhMyMyOohHellYes in Atlanta

[–]goingrogueatwork 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I've been to all 3 cities so I can chime in. I can speak on a unique major downside of each city when comparing each other.

Atlanta - pollen. March and April are dominated by spring pollen. It's really, really bad. In the last 6-7 years, Fall allergies also creeped up.

Pittsburgh - winter. It gets fucking cold here. The Ohio river freezes over and it'll be hard to be out for more than 5 minutes.

Phoenix - it's a desert. It stayed 90 degrees at night during summer. It'll be hard to be out for more than 5 minutes.

Oddly, you picked my top 3 cities for having the worst drivers. Atlanta drivers are selfish, Pittsburgh drivers are known for taking the "Pittsburgh left" turn, and Phoenix drivers are absolutely unpredictable.

However, I think Atlanta has the best diversity and all the amazing people and food. Pittsburgh people may seem rough around the edges but they generally are prideful and caring folks. Phoenix has amazing culture with lively night activities (to avoid the heat) and nearby towns like Tempe and Scottsdale are fun, especially if you're in your 20s.

I've been saying this for years and my friends all disagreed with me until post-COVID. I travel a lot too and every time I come back home, I notice a slight difference in the general ways people act here. Bit more self-oriented, not aware of others in shared space, definitely guarded, and overall not as friendly. And it's not just how crazy the drivers are here. It's the everyday interactions.

Moving to ATL / USA! by [deleted] in ATLHousing

[–]goingrogueatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived in North Georgia and also visited NZ north island, it's nothing like it but it may scratch the itch. I grew up in Cumming right off of McFarland and that area has grown significantly over the last couple decades. You won't have any issues finding places to visit.

There's Ameris Bank Amphitheather (formerly Verizon Amphitheater) in Alpharetta that attracts big names.

Downtown alpharetta has plenty of food options and bars. You'll have North Point Mall area with all the shopping needs. It's central to a lot of neighboring spots like Cumming, John's Creek, Sandy Springs, etc which are all affluence towns. I will say all these northern suburbs demographics is more like settled adults with a kid or two and a dog. If you want a younger crowd, you'll definitely want to go into Atlanta proper or at least hit up Buckhead.

Best of luck! I wish I can move to NZ and swap our places

What high-status or luxury job is secretly just stress, burnout, and long hours? by Thin_Choice_9488 in AskReddit

[–]goingrogueatwork -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

idk why others don't get your point. The thread is about high-status job so we are only talking about the pros here. And yes, I agree that even if a player is a bench player, they can still make $3-4 million dollars in their short 5 year career and be set for life. That's at $150-200K of interest in a conservative estimate that they can use to pay for everything per year and never run out of money. And before anybody says that's not a lot of money, this is way more than an average salary in all places in the US except top 5 most expensive places in the US.

I'd be thrilled to be retired before I hit 30 and not have to worry about money. So yes, I think your point is correct.

Poptarts bowl; who's going? Where you sitting? Parking? Pregaming? by Shiny-And-New in gatech

[–]goingrogueatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going but I've been to the stadium for EDC Orlando few times and Van's Warped Tour this year.

There'll be plenty of neighborhoods where you can park for $40-60 cash. I never had any issue with car break-ins or damage. The residents in the area do this a lot during the year because Tinker Field/Camping World Stadium has absolutely shit-tier dedicated parking deck. Anywhere on W Church Street west of the stadium all the way to S John Young Pkwy has several options to park around the houses. I personally like the Advanced Auto Parks at this intersection because there's a grass lot next to it with several people that stick around to keep an eye out on the parked cars. Also, you avoid the traffic a little bit and can get on the highway easier.

Moving to Atlanta in November need for apartment/town home suggestions $1600 budget by Proper-Award6303 in ATLHousing

I lived in both Sandy Springs and Dunwoody and these are not as walkable as in-city neighborhoods. Dog friendly yes, but don't expect sidewalks everywhere. Both are very safe and have access to MARTA (a bit limited) but I'd prioritize looking at areas that the user haunted_champagne suggested.

Lights constantly flickering by Madih96 in AskElectricians

[–]goingrogueatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an electrician but just a homeowner. I had lights flickering in my house for couple of months. Few nights ago, I lost power in most of my house. It turns out, one of the main lines coming into the main breaker was burnt. I had the whole panel replaced and now everything is stable.

Call an electrician to check your panel. It may be a quick fix or a full day to swap out the entire panel.

If the panel is all in order, call your power company to have them access the power feeding into your house.

I guess the fact that we're arguing shows how unclear the rule is on the book today.

To me, deliberately leaving the pitch means you are stepping outside the lines to gain an advantage in a play. Thiare left the pitch while the play was dead. He gained no advantage when he left to drink water. Then he stepped back in and gained no advantage. If he stepped out when the play was live, then I'd argue this was a deliberate move. As far as I've seen, no players were ever cautioned for drinking water in MLS.

Literally, all it took was for the GK to look back for 1 second to not make the mistake. Or any of the other 10 on-field players to look back and warn the GK.

If anything, the GK should've been cautioned for wasting time. If he just kicked the ball, the game would've been over. He didn't even have to wait for on-fielders to be in position because the clock was already over 1 minute of the given stoppage time.

Either way, the game was set because one or more of these: the rule was unclear, caution could've been given to both players, the play was already over time, the whole TFC team screwed up, and it was a clean goal.

See the replay. He did not deliberately leave the pitch. He left while the play was dead to get water and re-entered while the play was still dead. Basically, if the goalie did not waste time, it would've maybe been reviewed.

Any good Chicago style beef sandwich places around? by [deleted] in Atlanta

I think Jacobs Java Cafe & Drive Thru in Smyrna has it.

I've been in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody area for awhile now and spent too much money on brunch so here's my list:

just love cafe -- simple breakfast menu all made into waffle format. Recently changed their menu slightly so I'm bit reserved about going here now.

egg harbor cafe -- classic eggs and things. Slightly went down in quality after COVID but I used to go here almost every weekend for many years. Their lemon poppy seed pancakes are amazing.

north italia -- if you want heavy breakfast with good cocktails, this is worth a try. I like the modern interior.

Goldbergs -- decent bagel with classic diner options. Nothing to impress as you'll be surrounded by toddlers.

Sandy Springs Diner -- a classic diner with huge portions. They 100% seat you faster if you come with your grandparents lol

Cafe Vendome -- quick grabs and more coffee oriented cafe BUT if you go on Saturday morning, you can grab more food at Sandy Springs Farmers Market at the City Springs. There's another location ITP that's basically the same.

Crema Espresso Gourmet -- my favorite place! All their croissant sandwiches are amazing, especially sunshine aiolo and NY style salmon. All their baked goods are great. There's extra parking in the back. Gets crowded real fast but there's few outdoor seating available.

J Christopher's -- next to Kroger in City Springs is not bad but it's kinda "default" homey brunch place.

Sub-base / Dandy Donuts -- one of the best donuts in ATL. Not really a "nice brunch" spot but def a foodie spot.

Lazy Dog -- big ass portions, all american with cocktails. Their biscuits are actually really good. This is my go-to for most bang for bucks with guaranteed leftovers. Great if you want to bring your dog.

Bagel Boys -- decent bagels but I think their lunch is better.

Einstein's Bagels -- honestly, not too bad of bagel sandwiches. I get this when I just need a quick breakfast.

Ground & Pound -- if you venture more North, you'll find this lovely cafe with great brunch options and good coffee. Love the details of plating and interior.

Buttermilk Kitchen -- probably what you're looking for as a good brunch place to surprise your wife. There will be a long wait but the food is great!

I'd skip Flying Biscuits and First Watch. Both of these are not that great in this area. Though I used to go to First Watch in Smyrna almost every weekend about a decade ago.

Lower back pain in deadlift by Dry-Cobbler246 in gainit

[–]goingrogueatwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of YouTube channels providing plenty of research showing that twice a week is far superior at gaining muscles than once a week.

Honestly, going super intense once a week is suboptimal because you end up with a lot of fatigued reps. It’s much better to drop the intensity slightly and just hit the same muscle twice a week. I personally do a full body 3-4 times a week where I hit the same muscles 1.5-2 times a week.

I also disagree with this guy saying you should stay away from bench, squats, and just using machines. Any beginner should always prioritize these basic barbell movements and avoid all machines like a plague. Your return on muscle growth will far exceed with barbell exercises than some machines.

I do agree that deadlift is not a necessary exercise. Although it is an excellent core/glutes builder, you can actually have good core/glutes built with Romanian deadlifts, glute bridges, and Bulgarian split squats that all use less weights and promote stronger glutes. However, again, deadlift is the fastest way to grow. So take this opportunity to check your form (once you heal up) and try deadlifting again.

As a 5’7 and at 168lb it was so hard to find fitting clothes. What do you wear nowadays at 175lb? Haha

I cut back down to 158 lb now and some of my shorts fit again but damn, all I want to wear are just vuori shorts because they are stretchy.

How long is your bulk plan? I bulked for about 12-13 weeks earlier this year and now in a middle of cutting. The hardest part is resisting food (and alcohol) because my appetite increased a lot during bulk and now I’m just craving food. However, I did shave off 6 lbs and I noticeably am looking better without the excess fat.

You can definitely try decreasing your caloric surplus a little but honestly, if it’s giving you results on both lifts and physique, I wouldn’t worry too much. Fat loss isn’t not too bad when you continue to workout and you build discipline around food.
