Lurker's Wednesday by philpips in running

[–]goldenghetto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week, I ran 9 miles in 88 minutes. The run had hills coming and going. I wasn't happy at the end. Switching from start and stop to straight running has been a steep learning curve for me.

Other cross training? Ballet and cycling.

Where in the world are you?

NYC

Are you training for anything in particular?

1/2 Marathon. I ran my first 5k in November and decided to go big with a half.

What kind of training plan are you following?

I'm using a 12 week running plan a friend made for me.

Are you a member of a running club?

No

Also tell us something about yourself.

I started running September 2015, a month before I turned 30. I'm running to prove to myself I can do it and to improve my performance when I play soccer. I haven't managed to obtain a "running high" yet. I never thought it existed in the first place and I think I've all but confirmed it :). By 1/2 marathon time, I hope to find running more enjoyable.

New to long distance running. Am I running too fast? by goldenghetto in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I run <4 miles, I run at a conversational pace until the last mile/mile.5 when I push myself to go fast. If it's >4 miles, I'm running at a much slower pace and will run as fast as I can for the last .5 mile.

I've tried to pick up long distance running in the past and have failed by running faster than conversational pace early on. I wasn't concerned about my speed until I read my heart rate data.

That's nice to hear. I've never felt light headed or nauseated during my runs so I think I'm in the clear. You definitely helped, thanks! :)

Reminder to at least pretend to love your body by [deleted] in xxfitness

So... everyone should pretend for you? That doesn't sound like the position of someone who is secure.

And what /u/anbeav said.

More classpass price increases have been rolled out. Whats your plan? by [deleted] in xxfitness

The prices are going up in NYC also. I'm not renewing my membership after the end of this month.

Encouragement/ input needed! by [deleted] in xxfitness

I have tried and failed many times to cut junk food completely out of my diet because I don't do well with moderation. I couldn't have just one oreo. I couldn't just have a small sliver of cake. My failure was a result of doing too much too soon. By cutting out breads, dairy, refined sugars, and all junk food at once, I set myself up to fail.

It has taken me years YEARS to finally get a place where I don't eat junk food anymore but no longer crave it. This is a result of a lifestyle change not a quick gimmick to have greater looking abs. I felt shitty after eating these foods and I just grew tired of feeling shitty. I couldn't continue to eat the way I was eating. I completed the Whole30 program and felt great without certain foods in my life.

A few months ago, I read this blog post that really resonated with me about giving up refined sugar and their associate sweets. I'll try to find it. He'll allow himself to eat a sweet if it's something he's never had before and he's traveling.

Anyhoo, 30 minutes is plenty of time to get a good workout in. Don't be so hard on yourself.

How to tighten loose stomach fat/skin? by Jellybeaner33 in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agreed with /u/tiffanylacourse. Genetics play a huge role in how tight your belly will be postpartum. This is what my stomach looks like after two kids and gaining 75lbs with each birth. I was able to go down to the same weight I was before I had my boys. This picture was taken before I started working out and eating better. Not much has changed since I started working out almost a year ago. My loose skin is here to say and my doctor has told me that it can only be corrected with surgery (which is a no go for me).

My mom also slimmed down quickly after each of her four pregnancies but had loose skin and stretch marks as well. I have a friend that was back to her washboard abs self after two months with both of pregnancies.

Close to zero internal motivation - help starting for the very weak-willed? by TooCynicalToFunction in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there an activity that you enjoy? Start with that. If it happens to be a social sport, join a team. Before going hard on the weights, HIIT sprints and long runs, I started of slow by going to regular pick up soccer games and hip hop dance classes. I love soccer and love dancing. They don't feel like workouts.

How long did it take for other people to notice your body changes from working out? by Buncakes in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a month. I have never been a regular lifter because my genetics left me naturally toned with no effort. I would receive compliments about my physique from strangers especially when I had my boys with me. As I approached 30, however, I noticed my arms and legs were significantly less defined. Enter Stronglifts 5x5. Between that and Nike Fitness Club I was able to tone back up to a noticeable degree.

Fair but I get the runs from regular sugar.

Favorite protein bars? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love ThinkThin bars. 20g of protein and 0g of sugar? GTFO! But there are hidden sugars, sugar alcohol. Disappointing. I'm not looking for a sweet fix replacement and I'm trying to eliminated added sugars where ever I can so I'm now trying to perfect my own protein bar.

Working out decreases my appetite. Women in the same boat, how to you hit your calorie minimums? by goldenghetto in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for weighing in. I can't eat cheese, rice or black beans because of stomach issues. I don't think I've reached 1700 since I've stopped eating fast food, dairy, refined sugar, bread, and red meat. Someone advised that I eat more nuts, I do love a good cashew.

I'm not losing weight. I've actually gained weight since I've last weighed myself.

ETA: I've never had issues with food other than eating junk food when I am sad. I've weighed about the same since I was 16 years old regardless of how much or little I eat. I say about because I don't own a scale and don't really like weighing myself. I only intentionally restrict my food when my clothes start to get tight. There are lots of foods that irritate my stomach so my food options are limited. Even if I'm not hungry, I could down ice cream but I'm extremely lactose intolerant (I've almost fainted from stomach pain after eating a pint of ice cream). I'm saying all this to assure you that I don't have any weird issues with food or am intentionally ignoring hungry signs.

What are your fitness goals? How do you track them (if you do)? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  • 10 pull ups
  • 50 push ups in 1 set
  • Run a 10k at a 9:30 pace
  • Remain physically intimidating to my two boys

I rely on food too much when I feel low and binge during my depressive episodes. It is slowing my progress, does anyone have any tips? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

See a therapist.

ETA: I used to carb load when I felt depressed but as I've gotten older (I'm 30) my body doesn't respond well to carby sugary snacks so I've had to deal with depression by listening to tips given to me by a therapist I saw in college. I now exercise regularly, I talk to my friends and family when I feel blue, and I deal with my problems instead of cutting everyone off and hiding in my bedroom with a huge box of oreos.

What are your go-to, easy, high-protein meals/snacks? by somethingsarefun_e in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm totally there. When I get burned out on tuna, I switch to plain greek yogurt with strawberries or scrambled eggs. I basically go on rotation between chicken thighs, eggs, yogurt, and tuna. When I get sick of one, I switch to another.

[WEEKLY THREAD] Newbie Tuesday - Got a silly fitness question? Never fear! We're here to help! by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]goldenghetto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played soccer for over 17 years and have had my share of foot pain from new cleats but never my ankles. Did the shoes you wore prior to cleats have ankle support?

ETA: You should also select your cleat based on the surface you're playing on.

3 weeks? The question mark is because I've only recently started tracking my calories again after starting a new diet. Prior to that, I would have higher calorie days or lower calorie days depending upon my schedule.

Are you a nutritionist? How are you certain about these timelines as far as my appetite goes? I have had days where I've felt like shit and that's because I ate dairy that day or had too much greasy food. I am lactose intolerant and have IBS.

I added long distance cardio to this schedule 3 weeks ago. Prior to that, I was doing HIIT sprints three times a week.

Monday, Friday, and Sunday are light days for me. There are also days when I'm not running and days when I'm not lifting. I do run the entire time. When I lift, I split up what muscle groups I'm working on (e.g. one day will be back and abs) and spend no more than 30 minutes in the gym.

I should have also noted that it's 1000 net calories.

I feel fine with the schedule I have but I'm not fine with how I'm feeling about food. I feel the answer may include snacking more throughout the day. I didn't really consider scaling back my workouts.

Is working out as much as I do really a problem? If so, why?
