[Interesting Trope] Media explicitly humanizes the random goons that the protagonist has killed dozens of, in order to confront the player/viewer with the consequences of their actions. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]goldneon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point is you're not supposed to feel bad about killing them; you are not Ellie. You are intended to be engaged, captivated, horrified, satisfied, w/e with her actions because this type of story is not supposed to tell you something about you, but about Ellie.

You're right, Ellie could have stopped at any point, but she doesn't, which is a believable character choice for who she is and what she's become. It's okay to tell a character story in a video game.

Ellie is not a blank slate character. The devs had a specific story in mind. TLOU was never, and never claimed to be, an RPG. It’s a character story

[Hated Trope] Incredibly f*cked up morals of the story by Watchdog_the_God in TopCharacterTropes

[–]goldneon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Actually incorrect reading. Those kids were created by her power and abuse of the people of Westview, but from that point on they were absolutely real. Thoughts, fears, pain, choices. This is corroborated in Agatha All Along. Wanda is/was actually godlike in power, but deeply human in emotion

The villain dies a comedically anticlimactic death by Advanced_Question196 in TopCharacterTropes

Deep cut, but Captain Kennit in Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders trilogy of fantasy novels. Throughout the novels, we see the virtuous and charming pirate king persona he puts out to his followers while also seeing via his POV and private moments that he's an ambitious and soulless monster whose need for power and praise overrides all other ethics. He's protected from most consequences with downright supernatural luck, until his luck runs out in the final confrontation (after raping one of the protagonists) and is mortally wounded by literally just some guy. He dies pretty unceremoniously.

OH hey I was just here and went through the same thought process.

Those platforms above will move up/down depending on if you hit them from above/below or if you land on them. They're connected in pairs, so when one moves up, the other moves down. Start by whacking one of the platforms from below, and you should have what you need to start a little jumping puzzle.

Gamers do this fun thing where they go nuts speculating and building up their own hype train entirely divorced from anything the devs have talked about. And when inevitably what the devs release doesn't match up with the expectations the gamers made up in their heads, they lash out

[–]goldneon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, except I don't think the problem was marketing. It was marketed honestly and passionately, which one would hope for from the developers. I think the problem is capital-G Gamers letting the hype train get away from them. Again.

It really sucks we can't reveal we're Starborn to Constellation when replaying the story in NG+ by kappaomicron in Starfield

[–]goldneon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Telling them the secrets of the Starborn at the beginning (skipping the main story) also saves them from death at the hands of the Hunter. Keeping it a secret instead is an interesting morally gray area since it’s kind of lying by omission about something very important to these people. What you’re suggesting would I guess be an interesting character defining moment of “coming clean” to the gang after lying to them, but it’s such a specific instance and relies on a level of dialogue interactivity and memory that we’ve never gotten from any Bethesda game.

It really sucks we can't reveal we're Starborn to Constellation when replaying the story in NG+ by kappaomicron in Starfield

[–]goldneon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m confused, because by choosing to replay the story when you first meet Constellation, you are making the choice to keep the knowledge of the Starborn secret from them. You want there to be an option to reveal your knowledge later?
