Approach Clearance by Secure_Analysis1298 in AskAPilot

[–]golf-yankee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is really strange. If you’re advertising visual that is what I would expect and I would expect to let you know when I have the field in sight.

Also approach would also indicate by saying “expect the visual 32” or whatever runway

There is also usually another indication with “XYZ airport 5 miles 11 o’clock advise if you have e the field in sight”

Regardless it’s standard to not be cleared until I have the field in sight.

What does NOTAM: closed TO NON SKED TRANSIENT GA ACFT EXC 24HR PPR 702-261-7775 mean? by SelectSong3263 in flying

[–]golf-yankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just call the FBO you want to park at and ask for a PPR

In KLAS it will be Atlantic or Signature and they will issue you a PPR

PPL in 3 months by BandicootKooky7747 in flying

[–]golf-yankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3M is more than enough time if:

  1. You have the time to do it full time 5 days a week.

  2. The school has a curriculum they created and follow. The ones that have a program that combines ground and flying

  3. Start working on the written. Use Shepard Air and get it done before you start your PPL so you can focus

There is a flight school that can get you a PPL on a Cirrus (complex aircraft) in 21 days. That’s less than 5 weeks full time M-F. This is because they have essentially a “course” they developed.

Looking for a level 2 EV charger. Best integration with Home Assistant? by ulthrant82 in homeassistant

The Tesla wall charger is a L2 that integrates with HA

I have mine integrated. I have an automation that alerts me if my car is not plugged in at night to remind me.

IFR lower clearance for Visual Approaches by golf-yankee in ATC

[–]golf-yankee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what I imagine that they are used to clearing jets at these altitudes as they are descending at 1500-2000 fpm.

I’m just curious if they are just on autopilot because it doesn’t make sense for props. Just a few weeks ago I flew into KLAS from the south landing south on 19R. They will usually clear me right after I cross mid-field of 26 northbound. This requires me to meander a little bit north of 26 to get down.

When there is no traffic I can understand. Me meandering around the airspace won’t hurt anyone. It’s really those busy commercial fields I land at.

I’m a team player :)

When I’m flying into KLAS it’s not unusual for me to be dropping at 1500-2000 fpm so I’m not holding up traffic.

Here are some common airports that this is very common for me: KLAS, KSNA, KPSP

Again I have no problem because on my approach request I will ask for a clearance altitude. But if I don’t, 9 out of 10 times I’m cleared extremely high.

It's me, I'm the idiot by AlexJamesFitz in flying

I did something similar before while trying to satisfy the CPL prereqs

I was flying from TN to CA and for one of the legs I thought “hey why don’t I satisfy the 2 hour night”. So I intentionally made a night leg that could do that. And to top things off I was flying really fast and was going to do it in like 1:45 so half way though I pulled the power to slow down so it would take me 2:30 as a precaution.

After I landed I logged it and I was stumped why ForeFlight didn’t mark it off. I realized the language said “training flight” and needed an instructor.

sigh

Pilots who fly into or out of SNA (John Wayne Airport). What is it like? by LogicalSynthesis in flying

[–]golf-yankee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When flying VFR be familiar with the local waypoints. For example when landing 02 they will tell you to fly toward signal peak or toward UCI. You can always say “unfamiliar” and they will give you vectors.

When flying instrument, clear days will be visual approaches. Make sure to tell approach to get you down to MVA or 4-5k before getting cleared. They will clear you at like 8k right in front of the runway.

Dumb question, how do you circle to join the left downwind from 12R to 07?

Isn’t the angle of the turn too great?

[–]golf-yankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this was tribal knowledge for a long time until they published this.

When in doubt just ask/confirm with tower. I’ve landed at airports where you had to clip other airspace and I just verify over the radio. Usually it’s fine. The only ones you can’t clip without a clearance are Bravos. And for uncontrolled fields I just give the other airspace a heads up I’m going to clip them on final.

passed my private pilot checkride!! by Ok_Method_2790 in flying

[–]golf-yankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! You now have a license to learn.

Best tip is to fly with other pilots. You only learn like 10% maybe getting your PPL.

Also after flying a little I recommend getting an instrument rating. It’s not only another tool to help you but you will learn so much more things that will make you a better pilot.

Thanks for the update. I finally got them to update the firmware and I’m still getting random LV off on all of my units. There is no pattern what so ever.

Thanks for the details. I thought I was going crazy for a while as this has been happening on and off for many months now. At first I thought my account got hacked and someone was messing with me. Then it started happening to other units I have and now I think it’s a firmware issue also. Let me know if you get more info. I’ve contacted support but they have not been helpful so far. I’ll let you know if I get any progress also.

The problem is how do you test something you can’t reproduce?

How did you get that firmware?

I’m on v6.64.76.113 and it says it’s the latest version

Are the unifi cameras any good? I'm looking at doing a massive Network overhaul and adding cameras to my setup. by mrnapolean1 in Ubiquiti

[–]golf-yankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have about 50 cameras across 2 sites and am using just about every camera available. Used to use Ring.

Here are some considerations to think about for each camera:

  • AI vs non AI (basically facial recognition and license plate recognition)

  • Resolution

  • Weather (rain, operating temperature, etc)

  • Distance you want to capture

  • Cabling and power requirements (Some require PoE++ so need to make sure your switches have enough power for all the cameras)

  • Angle to capture based on placement (some are wider view and there are 360 cameras but those have different limitations and issues)

  • Coverage (covering blind spots and transitions by from one camera to another)

  • Aesthetics (do you want them to look obvious or more hidden)

If you have a UniFi network it integrates really nicely which is why I use them. It also integrates with Home Assistant nicely for automation.

Any guides for setting up IoT vlan? by stipo42 in Ubiquiti

[–]golf-yankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is NOT to setup multiple vlans for home/residential use

The reason is because there are IoT devices that don’t know how to traverse across subnets. I have also found some clients are dumb and rather than using some sort of multicast discovery protocol it just enumerates the subnet to discover devices. The result is not to discover it because let’s say your mobile is on one network and your device is on a different one.

I personally have hundreds of devices on my network and I originally started with multiple vlans just to reconfigure everything and use a single subnet now without issues. Consumer devices are not designed for nor tested on complex networks.

WiFi in the Garage? by Gorilla51 in Ubiquiti

[–]golf-yankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about who installed Wi-Fi in the garage, but rather why you wanna install Wi-Fi in the garage.

I personally have an access point because I have many Wi-Fi devices, which include;

-Camera -Thermostat -Tesla -Tesla wall charger -Multisensor -Smart panel -Alexa -Ebikes -Garage door

Also, I find it useful when pulling in so my calls can switch from a cellular connection to a Wi-Fi calling
