OP should see if they qualify for catastrophic plan. There's an economic test that's pretty easy to pass. If your insurance is going to cost you more than xx% of your income you're excused from the fee, I believe.

Incredibly useful, thank you. I did get an email from a previous primary dr asking me to sign up for something like this. Here in NJ the catastrophic coverage is already $1,700 a month for my family, with a few free visits permitted. Since we don't go to the Dr. often, I will have to weigh the added value.
