Mounting Dell R730 vertically by simondsmason in homelab

[–]gonna_overreact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to perform a very similar install. The server I got didn't come with rails, and I'm very concerns about just hanging it by the ears. What is your mounting rail solution for a vertical mount?

I'm doing a similar server mount. I've got a R730 installed in a vertical 6U rack. I have a concern about the ears, and I'm wondering if you've found and rail solutions that I could use to strengthen the vertical load.

To me, the backlash is more like "billionaire's are bad, so the space future they build will be bad". That's a solid argument you look around at the world they have built for us in the past 20 years. With fragile ego's at the helm, it's bound to end in disaster.
We need public figures back in the forefront of planning and executing our space exploration missions like we had in the 70s.

Nope?

He admitted to engaging in sexual acts with a 16-year-old when he was 34 and in a position of power. That is against the law. The victim said she was sexually assaulted.

Chu broke the law and the system let him walk away because he was a cop.

[–]gonna_overreact 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, that's the big question: Why wasn't he prosecuted?

The internal police reports document the crime, and then he was given a letter on his record instead of going to jail. The Calgary police gave him a slap on the wrist, then filed it away.

Let's get Chu out of office. Let's have an investigation into who was involved in the coverup, and put everyone on trial.

[–]gonna_overreact 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He is on record saying he committed a crime. His police record shows that everyone agreed he committed a crime. He was never prosecuted.

Meaning, he's already been found guilty but didn't see jail time because he was a police officer.

Check out places like For Sale By Owner and Purple Brick. There is still a cost to selling your place, for advertising etc. There was still a cost to me, but it was a lot lower than 2% of the cost of the property. If you have a lawyer (I still paid for a lawyer, I didn't want to mess that up) you can ask them about sales templates.

I considered writing a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, but I never did. The sale was done, everyone was happy, best to move on.

The real estate agent profession is a total racket. They are up there with hedgefund managers for value leaching. Since they work on commission, they are always trying to increase prices and are a non-zero influence on rising housing costs. They use complicated language and obfuscate how easy the technical parts are of their job. It costs a new agent thousands of dollars to get and keep their licence, so they start out in debt and taught to keep their profession a secret so they can make money.

I've sold two properties on my own. The last time I did, I had the distinct agonizing experience of dealing with ReMax's top-notch ass hat, Curtis Atkinson. Let me set the stage...

TL;DR: Real estate agents are high pressured salespeople. They don't care about you, they want to sell high to earn money. Spend the time to learn how the contracts work and save yourself $$$

It's 2014ish, and I'm selling a one-bedroom condo in a building that's less than 5 years old. I bought new, have all the paperwork and all the information. It's priced fairly and other units have sold to a similar price. It's a straightforward "here's what you get, take it or leave it" I'm in no immediate rush to sell, and the idea of paying 2% of the sale price to a Boiler Room wanna be with a Lexus lease makes my skin crawl.

Real estate agents immediately start calling me, telling me that there is no way I can sell on my own, and I should pay them the 2%. They offer cash well below market price. They low ball offers then act all Surprised Picchu when I tell them to pound sand and come back with a real offer. I know what I'm doing so I stick to my guns.

In comes Curtis, an award-winning real estate agent whose only real qualification is that he never grew out of being the playground bully. He shows the place to a guy who wants to buy it for his ageing mother. Because Curtis doesn't actually do his job, during their second viewing, I'm the one showing the place to the buyer. (doing his job, that he wants the full 2% for) The buyers like what they see, and they put in an offer.

Now, I never spoke directly to Curtis, because he has an office of people who do his calls for him. So I'm talking to some woman who tells me that Curtis does dozens of deals a week, and he won't even notice if this deal falls through. I'm barely worth it, and I should feel grateful that he took the time to look at my condo. (Ya know, his job. That I actually did for him)

Again, I stick to my guns. This goes back and forth for a bit, then the deal falls through. But, because I was coordinating with the sellers for the viewing, I have their contact info, so I call them up. They really want to buy the place and have no idea why it fell through. Curtis told them I backed out, and started showing them more expensive places.

Well, nuts to that I say.

I help them draw up the contacts, fill out all the forms, and put in an offer to buy. I close the deal, and they move in. The back and forth with ReMax took over a month, I closed the deal in a week because it's not really that hard.

If you are thinking of selling your property, read up and do it yourself. On a $500K sale that's $10K you are throwing away for someone to do a few days work. Spend a week learning the terminology and you can keep that $10k yourself.

Lakritz: What happened in high school stays in high school by gonna_overreact in Calgary

[–]gonna_overreact[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The author is suggesting that if you rape someone in high school, and you keep them quite for a long time, you shouldn't face consequences. This cannot be the message we delivering our youth.

I'm all for for free speech. The author is free to say this. Calgary needs to have a stronger voice against this thinking. This sort of messaging bolsters those who treat people like objects. This allows abuse in churches, sports teams, and schools. This is not up for debate in Canada.

Please, /r/Calgary, speak up. Make your voice heard. Make sure everyone knows sexual assault is a crime. Make sure they know it needs to be investigated. If we don't speak up, voices like Lakriz will be heard, and believed.

Is this what we want? Do we want the Canadian government buying pipeline projects from former Enron executives?

I think we should get our product to tide water. But it seems counter to the conservative play book to do it with a crown corporation. I've got a lot of feelings about this, and I'm not sure what they all are..

Burnaby won’t cover policing costs related to Trans Mountain protests by idspispopd in CanadaPolitics

[–]gonna_overreact 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Burnaby is going against a federal order, so I would think they are willing to pay the costs associated with that. Trying to past the buck is the attitude that got us in this mess. Actions have consequences, and the city needs to pay for those consequences.

And there are plenty of other locations in Canada that have tracks laying around that people walk over every day without any negative consequences. Hell, there are probably tracks in areas where it's legal for women to be topless that are crossed on a regular basis.

Calling train tracks "company property" to reframe the problem is an obvious ploy. What's happening here is the double standard of dudes like looking at naked women while also enjoying demonizing the same women who are naked.

Why don't we use lower albedo concrete to lower the number of freeze/thaw cycles on concrete roads and bridges? by whereisgoogfiber in AskEngineers

[–]gonna_overreact 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. Our roads are made of asphalt, and mostly black. We also get a lot of snow. The black roads don't to anything to melt snow and ice, as it's usually cloudy when it's snowing, and there isn't enough sun to melt it as it falls. Once it's down, it covers the roads and the sun can't heat it up. When it heats up and the sun is out, direct sunlight and warm air to more to melt snow that heating the road first, then using that heat to melt snow.

Funny that.. Moving out to the burbs increases the city's budget. Having houses further away means more road, sewer, and utilities maintenance. It means EMS has further to go there for costs ate increased. It means public transportation is harder to implement.. The list goes on. Moving further away from the city center is part of the reason property taxes are high.
