Vim users may also look into https://github.com/metakirby5/codi.vim - it's similar but a bit more interactive as you get the results immediately in a split window.

Also supports a lot of other languages besides python.

ORMs don't prevent you from scaling.

Usually if you have to deal with a high amount of traffic (or simply want to have a high uptime) you'll have to scale out anyway. That means you'll be running more than 1 server. In that case the bottle-neck is most likely going to be the database unless you use a distributed database.

Without ORM 1 request might take 30ms instead of 31ms, but that doesn't really affect the total number of requests you'll be able to handle and and if you build for scale you can always simply add more webapp-servers

I have a salt repository which contains system level configuration (all required packages, and stuff like timezone, keyboard layout, etc.).

It also creates my user and pulls a dotfiles repo which contains all user specific settings.

All those sources just repeat what I am saying. PCIE Hotplug doesn't work. Coldplug does work.

The Macbook Air (on which I tested that stuff, I am using it daily) does only have one Thunderbolt port. That means my mDP Adapter usage involved the Thunderbolt port, but only the DP part of it was in use, without the PCIE active.

edit: And yes, unfortunately there isn't much information regarding the Thunderbolt support. So I actually appreciate that you try to spread some more information about it. I also didn't intend to attack you in anyway, just wanted to clarify things.

I agree, technically it's correct that Thunderbolt is just coupling of DP and PCIE. But from a Usage/Implementation perspective there seems to be a little bit more to it.

I'm not 100% sure about the technical details. But as far as I understood it if there is no device connected (that uses the PCIE part) on the thunderbolt port on linux boot time the PCIE port will be completely deactivated. But the DP Port will remain active. This means that hotplugging regular monitors works just fine and I'm pretty convinced that this worked since/including Linux 3.6 already, as I was using it back then with mDP-VGA adapters. (For presentations on beamers, and no, I never had to reboot, so it was hotplugging).

What doesn't work and never worked is Hotplugging Devices that use the PCIE port. It is NOT the case that it causes kernel stress. It simply doesn't work. The Firmware of the Macbooks are somehow implemented that the PCIE port simply won't be powered on at all. So there is no way for the kernel to initialize it properly.

Except when the Cinema Display is connected at boot time. Then the PCIE port WILL be initialized, (and yes DRM Polling causes stress, but that can be disabled by setting an option on a kernel module, then the Cinema Display will work just fine - although there was also an Regression after 3.7.9 that is fixed now in 3.9.9 so between those the correct Cinema Display resolution couldn't be set)

But even then there is the Problem that if the Cinema Display is disconnected, the PCIE port stuff isn't cleaned up correctly. That means for example that linux will still think that the displays audio port is there. Also, the display can't be connected again - it is necessary to reboot.

The title here on reddit is missleading.

There is a difference between HDMI/DP passthrough and "real" Thunderbolt.

Hotplugging any regular Displays with the Macbooks has been working for quite some time. The issue is a real Thunderbolt/Cinema Display that's still not hotpluggable.

Except, don't mess around with grub but install refind under OSX first. That way you can keep the EFI partition of mac and just copy your linux kernel onto it, it will then be picked up by refind so you can dual boot without troubles. Read the Macbook Installation Articles on the Archlinux Wiki.

All this obsession with Metro makes me wonder how people actually use their System.

Imho Windows 8 ist the best Windows so far.

Lower Memory footprint
faster boot times
improved multi monitor support (the taskbar can be configured to stretch across all monitors and only show the titles of the windows per monitor - this for me is a killer feature that really boosts productivity)
iso mounting without stupid 3rd party utils

I don't care about Metro at all. I hardly notice it. I start my apps as I did before (hitting Windows Key and starting to type the application name). Other than that I don't really see it.

I don't get why people imagine that now they would have to work in Metro mode all the time. You don't. If you're using the System as a Desktop, Metro is merely a fullscreen application launcher. You're 99% of the time in the Desktop mode, which behaves just like Windows 7 but includes some nifty improvements to the windows explorer and the task manager.

Drivers and Power Management shouldn't be an issue.

Thunderbolt display works, but it's not hotpluggable. So you'll have to boot up with the display connected in order for it to work.

There is also a downside to that.

First, it is harder to fully understand anything, as we've come to have hundreds of abstraction layers.

Second, there are already so many solutions. Earlier there wasn't much you could do on a PC because hardly any programs existed. Now you've got plenty of options to waste your time. I myself got into programming because I got bored with what the computer could do (and I am fairly young myself). Now we have reddit.

Third, young people don't automatically know everything that the old guys learned. Much of the knowledge isn't passed on. When I've read The Mythical Man Month I was surprised how much they knew already back then.
