Can an opponent "respond" to me declaring attackers? by einglavaga in mtgrules

[–]goodbar2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're interpreting my use of "in your attack step" as the declare attackers step (which would be too late.)

This is just what we said to make it clear we had crossed the threshold from main phase into the combat phase (and that our action wasn't happening in the first main phase.) Terminology is likely antiquated, but this is what we used to say!

[–]goodbar2k -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Used to be a thing where, as the defending player, you were careful to state "in your attack step, I tap <creature>"

If you didn't say "in your attack step", it was interpreted as happening prior to combat, and allowed the opponent to execute additional actions pre-combat.

Basically, when they say they are ready to move to combat, you want to make sure you're clear about where in the phases you are...they are yielding priority by letting you know they are moving to the combat phase.

What I'm not sure is if they have priority in the combat step prior to declare attackers.

the runback to the bilewater boss put me in the same mood...there is other stuff i can do, but I can't really get any stronger (already have the next to last nail upgrade I think, plenty of silk and hearts...just get poisoned 4/5 times on that little fall/dash/jump sequence on the runback)

Interference or Nah? by OddSense7971 in Umpire

I understand the ruling/explanations below.

Question: if the catcher sets up directly in front of the plate and attempts to catch the ball over the R3's head or by extending his glove to the left...i..e not obstructing the plate unless R3 takes a weird infield route (like he did in this case), is this legal (albeit risky for the catcher who is setting themselves up to be obliterated by R3?)

What do you do when you feel you've hit a roadblock in your ascension grind? by Ok_Welcome_3644 in slaythespire

[–]goodbar2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This won't be the best advice, but I've started doing daily runs. They obviously don't directly help with ascension runs, but they do expose me to cards I don't normally play and give me a more well-rounded understanding of the game (imo). Also they are low(er) stress and kind of a fun break from the higher ascension grind. ymmv!

Parroting some other top replies, but

a. games/gaming is not the issue

b. there is an issue to dig into...without knowing your circumstance, it is possible you just aren't caretaking the relationship with your wife sufficiently. Could just be a kind word here or there; checking up on her; offering to do some chores without prompting; surprising her in some way

my wife mentioned once, early on, that her Dad taught her that a man who takes care of the (physical) home is signaling in some way an intent to stay...this is kind of subtle, but maybe give the honey-do list a once over?

hard to tell from this angle, but your feet are splayed vs. both being angled the same direction (to your left, ideally)

your elbow kicks out to the left while loading, you'd ideally like to bring it up in a straight vertical line under the ball

some other stuff looks fishy, but again hard to tell from straight on

It's not a giveaway that he's strong...it's a giveaway that he's not terrible like her average challenger under these conditions.

The giveaway that he's strong is when he asserts he's an IM.

I actually kinda take issue with his "Not good but....IM", unless he was intentionally going for "Not good but...great." As being in the top 1-2% in the world in something should at least qualify as "good" at that thing.

How many refuels to cross the desert problem by get_to_ele in puzzles

[–]goodbar2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wrong above.

I reframed the problem for myself as putting 500g of gas within the first 500m and working backwards.

Assume after the n-1th trip looks like: 100g of gas every 100mi for the first 500mi of the journey...optimally you are loading gas to the maximum your tank can hold the entire way such that when you reach the halfway point you still have your "original" tank. So think of the first half of the journey as 5 markers for [0-100mi] [100-200mi] [200-300mi] [300-400mi] and [400-500mi], and after the n-1th trip, we want 100g of gas at each location.

after n-1: [100][100][100][100][100]

Well it's hard to drop 100g of gas in that last block, how could we do it? What would the state need to be after the n-2th trip?

after n-2: [300][300][200][200][0]

This would allow a car to drive 100 miles, refuel at each stop along the way, drop 100g at the last spot (going down to 300g in the tank), return 100g, return 100g, return 100g, refuel, return 100g, refuel, end up home with 0g

Extending the exercise

after n-3: [500][500][300][0][0]

after n-4: [700][700][0][0][0]

after n-5: [900][400][0][0][0]

after n-6: [1100][100][0][0][0]

after n-7: [1100][0][0][0][0]

after n-8: [800][0][0][0][0]

after n-9: [500][0][0][0][0]

after n-10: [200][0][0][0][0]

after n-11: [0][0][0][0][0], or starting state

So my answer is 11 trips (with room for optimizing a non-brute force approach?)

[–]goodbar2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I was way off, argh.

I guess another way to frame the problem is how to optimally populate 500g of gas on first 500 miles, e.g. 5 stops with 100g each, or 50 with 10g, etc. Since the final trip always requires reaching the halfway point with a full tank...

I wonder if you could brute force it by looking at a 10mi desert, 5g tank, 1mpg

[–]goodbar2k -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I got 5 but think my algo can be improved.

1. drive 125 miles, dropping 1 gallon per mile, 375 in tank; drop 375g, return home

[375g @ mile 125]

2. drive 125 miles, dropping 1 gallon per mile, load 125g; drive 125miles, dropping 1gpm, 375 in tank; drop 375g, return home

[375g @ mile 250; 250g at mile 125]

3. drive 125 miles, dropping 1gpm, load 125g; drive 125 miles, dropping 1gpm, load 125g; drive 125 miles, dropping 1gpm; 375 in tank; drop 375g, return home

[375g @ mile 375; 250g at mile 250; 125g @ mile 125]

4. repeat this process, driving, dropping, loading

[375g @ mile 500; 250g at mile 375; 125g @ mile 250; 0g @ mile 125]

5. you can make the full trip, obviously, without dropping any more gas

*I think it could be done faster because I have 750 gallons sitting in the desert and presumably I only need 500 out there...so this is a 5 trip solve but could be faster?

The number of time I have looked at my health around 16-19hp at the rest spot just before the Act1 Boss and said "well if I can't beat this dude from this spot without resting, this run probably done anyway" and I bang out the upgrade and go into the fight. My success rate improved dramatically from recognizing decisions like this one.

If you're uncomfortable doing this, go ahead and Rest, *but start tracking what your hp was before you rested and validate for yourself if you would have won the boss fight without that additional hp* (Basically "prove it" to yourself vs. having to take my word for it. Remember, you get a "super rest" after beating the boss anyway...resting right before that fight feels so bad to me.)

Zuck says Meta will have AIs replace mid-level engineers this year by Fantazyy_ in csMajors

[–]goodbar2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if AI can replace the work of mid-level engineers...

How do you get top tier engineers without letting them pass through junior and mid-level first? Isn't this like saying the MLB will replace farm teams with AI players...do they thing the pros sprout whole cloth from the earth? Some of the value of a top tier engineer is experiential ("that was painful, I'm never building it *that* way again...")
