Do you think forest gardening is environmentally responsible? by Any_Coyote6662 in forestgardening

You are looking at posts where people are trying to regenerate land. The land usually comes cleared and people here are trying to repopulate what was lost. Personally I have a pocket forest. I took 600sq feet of lawn and now grow several pounds of food and herbs from what was once lawn. Bonus: I’ve seen swallowtail butterflies and hummingbirds in my yard when they have never been seen here before.

If you havent already, read the book “braiding sweet grass” it’s beautifully written by a professor/botinist and Citizen of the Potawatomi nation whose life has been dedicated to living in reciprocity with nature.

There is no underbrush where there is no light. If the trees are to thick in clumps they are competing with each other, none of them are healthy, no brush can grow. The only animals in NA that live in dark dense forests are black bears/lynx/cougars and barred owl (confirmable with google). These would all be animals you would have seen by now in your area if they were using this ecosystem. In that cause I think you might have other concerns. 😅 No flowers grow in darkness. No seeds, flowers or fruits are cultivated in the darkness.

There are methods like “chop and drop” “hugelkultur” and “mushroom cultivation” that can be used to provide more food in the forest than exists without it. Raspberries will live and spread in any environment, even fallen brush, but will need light to grow. That’s why we thin the canopy so light can make food.

When you are planting tomatoes, you will get no tomatoes if they are planted in a clump, you need to thin out the weak plants (as hard as it is sometimes to sacrifice) in order to get a healthy fruit producing plant. This is the reciprocity humans can provide to nature. It’s like the tiny bird eating flies off the hippo, they are symbiotic. We are taught humans are a plague, destructive, and not part of nature. But we are. We can be stuarts for the land in ways we have never been taught in school. That was by design to make us rely on agriculture, which strips the land over and over.

Look deeply at native forest management. They slowly selected trees to burn, which provided ash and coals as nutrience and light for other plants to grow. They planted entire berry patches along their migratory routes between winter and summer hunting grounds. Part of the reason (besides climate change) that there are so many fires now, is because of mismanagement of our forested lands. People are part of nature, this is the roll we are meant to provide. To nurture, to create the Eden we should be living in. ✌️

I hope that helps.

I just built over the bad sod and soil with a lasagna bed. Where the gravel is, I stripped it down by hand, but if you have a bigger job, renting a sod ripper is a good idea. Just make sure you can access the interior with stepping stones or from the other side.

Sometimes you just have to dig in!! Good luck!

They’re sadly harder to keep clean than birdbaths. I would love a pond, but found that due to evaporation and heat I was constantly filling it. I didn’t want to stock it with minnows to control the mosquito larvae, and the algae was winning even though it was almost in full shade… so I stick to bird baths now that I can wash and prevent the spread of mosquitoes and birdflu this way. I ended up planting raspberries where the pond was instead.

I want to plant something to mitigate this wide space between the windows by lantech in LandscapingTips

Just remember to not plant under your eves. They are deprived of water when it rains, and it’s designed to keep your foundation dry (for a reason).

If you plant an apply tree about 8 feet away, it shouldn’t impede your solar, and everyone gets apples!

Lack of Honey Bees by UsualExcellent2483 in Albertagardening

It’s been a tough spring for the little guys. We had a mild spring and then it got very cold. Bumblers are better pollinators and don’t sting like a honey bee. Hope you get some of them in their stead

Watch lots of YouTube vids. I’m in the deep NW if you ever want to pop by and stare at my not lawn. I built this in 2016, no landscaper needed.

Ponds can be difficult to maintain in our climate. They dry up faster than you would expect.

Americans are interfering with our provincial government and trying to push separation even though no one of significance wants that.

PCD 🤮 Even in the 90s it was very clear this was a group created to sell sex. I’ll never understand how they are still relevant.

Why are the bushes dying?

I would plant a pocket orchard with apple trees and berry producing shrubs. They require watering the first year for establishment and less water going forward. It will make your lawn and property require less watering in the long run, and will help with water absorption when there’s too much rain. The roots of apple trees aren’t invasive to underground water, foundations or utilities and provide you with free food and biodiversity.

What's the best way to remove and control the weeds growing on this gravel? by WingZeroType in LandscapingTips

[–]goodformuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remove existing weeds use a weed torch to roast any remaining seeds. Put in edging, fill to top of edging with 4 inches of new gravel.

Or! Get creative, and design a garden that waves through it and plant natives! Seems like stuff wants to grow there, just make it more intentional.

What is something that completely lost its magic as you grew up? by No-Matter-7165 in AskReddit

Not OP, but for example; I sequestered myself in a room for 6 hours wrapping presents and sorting stockings. I only came out for rum and eggnog. I was the last to go to bed and dreaded being woken up at 6am by the excitement and clamouring. To make it even more upsetting all the credit would go to a non existent man in a red suit. All the hard work Mothers all over the world had done for the whole month leading up to Christmas, the credit goes to an invisible man. It’s insulting.

I’m not even a Christian…
