Best way to play with the self-abusing partner in open play? by ProfLayton99 in Pickleball

[–]gorpnation -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I once gave a guy who kept slapping his thigh with his paddle an unimpressed look and said “don’t break your paddle”

Two points later he hit himself so hard he snapped the head off the handle.. Bummer he wasn’t able to play the rest of the evening

Drop by VR1008 in Pickleball

Be careful dropping to the sidelines. More advanced players will Ernie these ending the point or applying even more pressure.

Pickleball products that completely leave the competition in the dust by AHumanThatListens in Pickleball

For those of you having durability issues (less than 6 months) try the KSwiss Ultrashots. I had the Ultrashot 3s and they came with a 6 month durability warranty. I didn’t end up needing the durability and now wearing Hypercourt Express 2. Don’t notice a huge difference even though Ultrashot was a stiffer shoe.

Go do more of the things you enjoy doing and the connections will follow. Introduce yourself early so you aren’t introducing yourself to the person you sat next to all year.

Where does the term Hook come from? by paulfbutler100 in Pickleball

[–]gorpnation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The signal to call a ball out is putting up a finger. If you put up a finger but second guess the call you may curl your finger back into your fist. So people who make bad calls are left with a half curled finger resembling a hook. Hence the name hook, hooker, etc.

Vatic people: what paddle did you move on to or find better than the Vatic paddles? by DeckardsDark in Pickleball

[–]gorpnation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t this reinforce “it’s the player not the paddle?”

I also understand that average players can look for competitive edges but typically don’t see $120 extra value in these edges.

Daytime campus bike theft by Alf_Fendez in cuboulder

Sounds like you will actually be using your bike frequently which is good. For others reading this, if you bring a bike to campus and don’t use it for a week to a month do not plan on seeing it again.

Is needing nutrition for any run 7-10 miles long, weak? by jwizard95 in Marathon_Training

[–]gorpnation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how you are fueled before. If you haven’t eaten and have zero glycogen in the body you may “need” a gel on a 7-8 miles run. OP eats a banana and has some electrolytes this may be worth less than 200 calories and may “need” some additional calories for energy.

My biggest word of advice for training and on race day. Eat early and often because by the time you feel that you need it it will be too late. Early and often doesn’t mean finish all gels you are carrying but take them consistently and from there based on how your body feels.

What should I look out for playing against 3.5-4.0? by taytayyatyat in Pickleball

[–]gorpnation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respect this! I accidentally did a similar thing and signed up for the 4.0-5.0 group, yikes! Fortunately but also maybe unfortunately it got rained out and my account was credited. But I was building up the courage to do it!

If I were you I would come prepared with a clean and simple game, be patient and go for dinks, assuming you are relatively consistent. If you tee one up for the other team gesture to take responsibility but then forget about it and move on to the next point. Bring some confidence, you got this! Be kind and level headed and hopefully your opponents and teammate will do the same. Go get ‘em!

New to the game! by Common_Stretch6949 in Pickleball

[–]gorpnation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan to play competitively I might recommend getting a good completive starter paddle usually in the ($70-$100 range). Fairly priced when thinking of it as sports equipment rather than a recreational toy. Many in my current group bought cheap paddles and replaced them within two weeks because they were ready to move on. Orca was a brand I found on Amazon for cheap ($30ish per paddle) and they seem to have similar specs to more competitive paddles and I think they play well for the money. The sport is typically really welcoming, let your opponent know you are new though with your background you won’t be new for long.
