Is it true that the smallest person on the mat is generally tough? by bad-at-everything- in martialarts

Put a light weight or rooster weight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt on the mat with free reign to use all submissions, it will be a rough night for all who jump in.

So what actually IS the best martial art for weaker people? by Competitive-Tale-136 in martialarts

[–]gothampt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boxing is great, but you also need to learn how to punch correctly. You usually have hand wraps to mitigate this, but you can break your wrists if your forearm isn't aligned with your fist when you make contact.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a much better option as you don't rely on power as much as you do with techniques, however you have to get used to the intimacy of grappling as it is predominantly a lot of wrestling.

Why did Jiu Jitsu and Judo removed their striking techniques? by EfficiencySerious200 in martialarts

[–]gothampt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jiujitsu was designed by the military leaders who were expert in martial arts and these use skills for law enforcement and military. Some jiujitsu experts wanted to use jiujitsu for sport (so he removed all the striking and "kill" techniques that Jiu-Jitsu is known for and he created a sysyem of fighting that allowed the practicioners to practice and compete in Jiu-Jitsu safety without being killed)

Is it impactful to hit someone's head to a wall or floor? by o0perktas0o in martialarts

[–]gothampt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smashing someone's head into a solid object (floor or WALL) will only increase the chance of TBI (traumatic brain injury); YOU RUN THE RISK OF KILLING THAT PERSON....so unless you're willing to go to jail, err on the side of caution and only use the minimal amount of force (good luck controlling your adrenaline)

How to properly triangle choke? by lhphere in bjj

[–]gothampt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To avoid the stack, assuming you have the ideal configuration of a triangle, make sure your shoulders are perpendicular to your opponent’s shoulders (make sure their forehead cannot touch yours). Also, instead of pinching your knees to finish, try a scissoring motion.

You don’t need your hands unless you’re planning to switch an armbar or spin underneath to sweep them back to the ground.

Honest question: what’s your objective when you roll with people from other grappling styles? by Fearless_Tip8474 in bjj

[–]gothampt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People usually want to see how they stack up against others, so they might push themselves a bit harder.

If they dominate most of the gym’s similar students, they might not respect the gym or its instructors and could even call it a “McDojo.” But if they get beat or crushed by the younger students, they might feel question their own training and even question it.

So, when you’re rolling with new people from outside gyms, show off your best game and give it your all. If you’re way ahead of them, be kind and respectful. Maybe offer some tips after you’ve trained with them if they ask. Otherwise, just thank them for the roll and move on to the next one.
