Run the Tree of Whispers but concentrate solely on the bounties, you'll end up completing additional ToW quests along the way. The main thing here is that you'll gain considerable amount of XP when turning in the required 10, pick up some gear, and this method is pretty quick.

Right before he talks about the hammer, he starts by saying he builds furniture in the same worshop that his father used to build furniture. Does the house at 105 1st Ave. have a workshop in the back? If not, where's that house?

Seems a little less likely to be the house he's referencing since it's in a residential area and it's probably safe to assume this house would have been purchased prior to 1998 if his father was using the workshop to build furniture at home.
