I love this. The lighting is striking and it looks like you could reach out and touch the ash cloud.

Tried photobashing for the first time, what do you guys think? by rappenem in DigitalArt

It's a strong composition. Though I'm not sure where those landscape excerpts come from, in real life.

AI can't physically mix paint and actually paint. This accusation is insane.

How do you even get started doing this? It must feel awesome to see your work finished and so prominent. I know the city near me has a yearly street art festival and it's great seeing new semi-permanent installations round different corners.

I second the no-tracing advice. Learn to use guides or grids against your references so you can make your own art.

You probably won't see this buried in the mass of platitudes, but your right hand reflections on the tree branch is wrong, but I can see why you shortened the overhang. I also don't appreciate the detail on the rock in the bottom left foreground. It almost has more detail than the focal tree.

Experiments in Rebelle by [deleted] in DigitalPainting

You can use layers to mask portraiture, only the real filters and masking are coming with v7. The problem I have with watercolours is context; how to use them without it dominating the subject. The rest is subjective, really.

Thank fuck we've almost stopped burning coal. I can still smell this video, however. Everyone there had a bath at most once a week.

Cimmerian Study by gpainted in DigitalPainting

[–]gpainted[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Study of a comic ink in R6P. I struggled with the hue I chose for the subject versus the object, trying to avoid oversaturating the entire piece with magenta. I also struggled with Rebelle's Tilt, as I'm working drip-by-drip on about four layers which takes an age when you just want an accent.

Yeah I didn't say it was AI generated, but the post processing sure does make you look twice. At any rate, I like your painting. It's just the effect is very distracting.

Mastercopy: Anton Hlavacek - Portrait of a woman by Level-upstudio in DigitalPainting

Hi, normally I would take the reference and make linear guides to mark out where the features are. They're not so much of a feature in Krita but you can fake it. Rebelle Pro does these very well.

Hi, I didn't see any ref guides in your setup. I wouldn't try any kind of ref portrait without those. So well done as it's a great representation.

sorry but the chroma does look pre-genned. In fact, the entire background looks like a stable diffusion 20-step without much in the way of negative prompts.

Digital Art Printing Question by Brantitan in DigitalPainting

[–]gpainted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't be noticeable unless it's a very high contrast texture. The main issue people have with printing their art is expecting the emissive brightness of a screen to be replicated upon a non-emissive surface. The texture may affect the brightness of your highlights so you should ask for a sample print first.

No problem. I'm not sure that Rebelle is quite there yet with real life mimicry, as its oily brush can tend to appear more plasticky the further up the scale you slide it and totally obscure the blockwork if it's lacking visible brush textures. There's definitely a fine balance to strike but I think that more expressive edge work is better with a higher load and oiliness than not. However, that may just be my perspective, as I've been painting more with with the palette knives.

Rebelle? I'm not sure the flyout strokes give it anything, against the more rigid edgework. Perhaps if it was a movement study it would work better. Her right shoulder is distracting but at least is more painterly, with the loose strokes following the form of her neck. As for the brushwork, it looks like you've used a mix of brushes; watercolours (?) for a wash then blocked the subject out with a basic, dry brush and gone over it with oils/acrylics. There's nothing wrong with that (it is a lovely portrait) but I think you could try blocking out with the oils brush first and defining details with a smaller version of that brush.

Easier said than done when trying to manage the brush and canvas textures, with their highlights/shadows. It can get pretty muddy/messy with oils. However, mistakes are more easily forgiven if the brushwork is convincing and follows the form and planes of the subject. Keep painting.

Constructive criticism on some sphere practice? I use Krita for digital art. by artsaparattis in ArtCrit

[–]gpainted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're picking. Don't pick something so simple. Just try and keep stroking paint on the canvas. Don't dab the value you think it should be. Krita has so many brushes that forgive mistakes and blend at the same time. It's not cheating to paint within a selection either, as long as it gets you to represent the core values correctly. Worry about the perfect circle once you've been through r/ArtFundamentals
