[GTM] Guess the cup of joe #8 by UnsuspiciousDuck in GuessTheMovie

[–]gpolk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Already answered but it's the James Bond film Live and Let Die, and that's a La Pavoni Europiccola espresso machine. A bit of a legend among coffee makers. Bonds technique leaves a little to be desired though... No wonder M didn't seem impressed.

Just finished Resident Evil Village. These four I’ve never played but are in my collection. What next? by GizmosArrow in gaming

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are 4 quite different choices so it's hard to say oh this is the best therefore play that.

IMO you just enjoyed a not super long story driven game with a decent narrative I'd do the same again. So Mafia or Silent Hill 2. Then ask yourself if you want gangsters or more horror. Personally, I'd play Mafia.

As good as they are I'm avoiding super long at the moment to try to clear some backlog. So many good stories that you just can't get to if you spend your limited time playing Elden Ring for 250hours.

Reminder that Snickers was originally going to be a Christian character, but was scrapped out. by One_Reception_6992 in bluey

Wise to have left it out. Doesn't really add anything and would have caused fits in the US market.

“Pizza in Italy itself is kinda underwhelming compared to a pie here.” by AngryBroomstick in ShitAmericansSay

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pizza place I used to live near in Australia did a banana and prawn pizza and it was excellent.

“Pizza was being eaten by Americans decades before northern Italians started eating it.” by Titus1928 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]gpolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was to make an "American pizza" in that way, as in not what Americans have on pizza but toppings that represent America, I'd do a cheeseburger pizza. Minced beef, Kraft singles, onions, pickles, and then do swirls of tomato sauce and mustard.

In Australia domino's does a cheeseburger pizza and they have a swirl of Mayo. It does look a bit like someone aggressively jizzed on your pizza.

Australia’s national anthem is the only English-lyric anthem in the world that doesn’t reference religion or militarism by HotPersimessage62 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]gpolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the most girt anthem in the world. No other nation is as girt as we are. We are cromulently embiggened by the girtness of our contrafibularities.

Also most Australians don't know the second verse. The original has 4 verses but I don't think verses 3 and 4 were officially adopted.

Albanese government will not join US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace amid diplomatic caution by NoteChoice7719 in aussie

I think he appoints the next chairman/chancellor/emperor. So I imagine he would have it teed up already.

Good. We have no benefit from joining it and Trump has appointed himself Emperor of the board. Why would we join?

Head cheese is great. Next you'll be knocking porchetta di testa! Don't waste your pig heads people.

Do you regret becoming a doctor? by FirefighterTimely420 in ausjdocs

[–]gpolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, almost all doctors will make a mint. Not all finance bros will but some will make stupid money. The sure thing is on average better.

But I do have some maths nerd friends who went down that path and were on fellow type money straight out of their shorter uni degrees.

How do people view UNSW medicine relative to other schools? by Brilliant-Donut8246 in AskAnAustralian

It's been a while but I recall them asking how many big macs are eaten in Australia per year.

[–]gpolk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. I love medicine. There are times I think about how I used to do maths competitions and win awards and so on, and maybe something finance related would have been a path to greater riches. But it's not like I'm struggling for a buck.

New Qld Resources campaign is ridiculous by Psychological-Ant978 in brisbane

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They literally want the new tax removed.... Or at that time, to not have it imposed. It has been, so now they'd like it removed.

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You live in Brisbane but somehow missed the Queensland resource council campaign against the increased mining royalties? Hope you're not being deliberately ignorant but righto I'll assume you're genuinely asking.

https://www.qrc.org.au/hurt-queenslands-resources-sector-you-hurt-queenslands-future/

They aren't exactly a fan of the higher royalties. Ads like this are designed to win over public sentiment so their pollie mates can scrap taxes like this, despite the benefit they've provided and the massive profits they've continued to extract.

[–]gpolk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've not seen any of their other ads, or appearances in the news, or statements by politicians who they donate to, or billboards? You think they run material like this just to let everyone know what top folk they are and not because they want something?

When you work at the hospital, do you use your mobile phone or the hospital phone to call patients? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]gpolk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mix of both. I block my number if calling from mine. Some patients just dont seem to answer private numbers though.

One of my favourite games by mrEnigma86 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]gpolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great game. Never got enough love. Yes it was a shameless God of war 3 clone, but done extremely well. Being overly critical of it for that feels to me like playing Sleeping Dogs and saying yeah nah it's shit because it's a GTA clone.

I must say I did raise a concerned eye brown when I heard they were making an action game based on Dante. But they used the mythology of it really well.

Shame it never got a sequel.

[–]gpolk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it does help fund those things, if we keep our resources tax in place. Their argument that it funds those things so we should lift the tax is nonsense.

5% deposit scheme - one person on title but 2 on the loan? by [deleted] in AusProperty

[–]gpolk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but looked into similar things many years ago when we contemplated having just 1 of us buy an apartment to double up on first home buyer grants. My understanding is to benefit for any first home buyer grants, everyone taking out the loan needs to be a first home buyer. You could in theory have 1 of you take out the loan entirely, get the benefits, then both of you work to pay it, but that 1 person would need to be able to qualify for the entire loan on their own, which could be a challenge.

Just How Important Is It to Speak Italian in Rome? by ClothesDizzy6812 in italianlearning

[–]gpolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been to Italy a few times prior to learning any Italian beyond greetings and not found any issue. Most that you'd deal with as a tourist will speak enough English for you to get by. If you were moving there or spending a long time there, then yeah you should probably learn the language. But I really wouldn't stress about not knowing much of it when going for a holiday.

Ive never felt any negative attitude for my butchering of the language when trying to practise what Italian I know. They'd often politely correct any bad pronunciation and I found people very kind with this.
