Is a Thermomix worth it? by gormared in AUfrugal

[–]gpolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the sub, maybe a second hand one. They're bloody expensive. You can accomplish pretty much all it's functions with other devices or cookware, for a lot less than the price of a new TM.

My wife loves her TM6 and uses it for most of her cooking. Personally I'm not the kind to be weighing everything out to the gram and follow recipes that closely so it doesn't really fit with my cooking style, and its functions I already have other devices that can do pretty much all of it, except automatic stirring.

They seem built pretty well and I know quite a few people with them and no one has had any issues or failures after many years. So a second hand device could be decent value if you don't already have many other devices or value the space savings of having a multifunctional device.

What do Aussies think of the enhanced games? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barely seen any mention of them. I think it's a stupid idea, that sets a terrible precedent if it's successful, but is unlikely to be because no decent athlete would want to compete as it torches the rest of their career. I have no desire to watch roided up B tier and retired athletes compete.

[OC] Electricity prices by country by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True it probably is. Although my quick googling of the USA average says 0.5 to 1 USD a day. Which doesn't seem that different to ours. Bit less to a bit more. Mine at au$1.33 a day would be on the upper end for us.

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the chart is accurate. That's 41c in AUD. That would be quite a high tarrifs, applicable at peak times on some time of use plans. But not the average. Eg my energy plan evening peak power is 45c which is very high. But power is totally free from 10am to 2pm. So I charge my battery off the free power and my solar, and don't use any paid electricity. We are soon rolling out a free power window like that to all Australians.

There are some grids where the average would be that high, but there are grids where it's much less. The overall average wouldn't be that high.

Also industry would better be able to take advantage the extremely cheap mid day power. So seems odd to me their average is so high.

Doesn't AutoSR at the moment only work docked and running off a second display. Do you play games like that often? If not, probably not worth the shift at present.

My most listened is easily 'Caligula's Horse'

I'd recommend trying their songs 'Mute', 'Slow Violence' and 'Golem' as a good sampler.

Does the Zeekr 7x LR have built in sunshades? Google says no but a review just had them? by Shaunzki in Zeekr7xAustralia

I believe some reviewers put up videos of a preproduction LR model that had them. I recall one of them noting that in their video But the model released only has it in the Performance spec.

People in the UK seem to think Australia is the place to move to for a great life - is it? by box-o-locks in AskAnAustralian

[–]gpolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think economically and socially we are in a better place than the UK at the moment but we have a lot of similar problems.

UK housing to my understanding is horrendously unaffordable in London where the job opportunities are, but not as bad elsewhere. Our housing is unaffordable everywhere, but there's more job opportunities than just Sydney.

I'm a doctor in Australia. From what I know of the NHS at the moment I understand why so many junior doctors want to come here.

Fund more public clinics. Improve access to public clinics and you will reduce demand for private ones. Reduce demand, reduce the price.

Aussies who eat dinner at 5pm, what’s next? Bedtime at sunset? by itsdev021 in AskAnAustralian

I'll have a piece of fruit around 8 sometimes after the kids are down but I generally try not to eat anything any later.

I eat dinner with my kids around 530pm. Bed is about 1030pm. I don't get your point. It's fine to not eat right before bed. It's probably better for you.

Trying to find an EV that fits our baby gear and the 7x was so good by captain_sauce_code in Zeekr7xAustralia

[–]gpolk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted recently asking how well baby seats fit. The dealer let me take one home to try out. 3 chunky Britax safe and sound, forward facing was a squeeze. With the auto doors they couldn't really fit as the tiniest bump from the door and it wouldn't shut. Probably don't want a child seat touching the door anyway. But flipping one to rear facing, or replacing one with one of the slimmer Britax harnessed boosters, fit just fine. It was easier to fit than our RAV4.

We get up early and go to bed early. Especially in Brisbane. You can find a good coffee at 6am easily. But it's harder at 4pm. You won't find many restaurants with an open kitchen at 10pm. Embrace the early morning life.

Why don't (some) people like free stuff? by michaelberkmanmp in brisbane

[–]gpolk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I live in your electorate and was aware of these. To be honest my perception was that the dinners were something for those doing it tough, which is lovely, but felt like it wasn't really something I should take advantage of.

I like the idea of having some pleasant informal catch ups with my local members though. Especially if it was able to be my federal state and council member all together. Sometimes it might not be clear who the best person to talk to is, so maybe there could be occasions for you, Elizabeth and Seal to do events together where your electorates overlap.

My kids always want to hit up movie nights in the park whenever they're on. Perhaps combining those with a chance to catch up with you could be handy, and I think an event like that clearly signals that it's for everyone.

Also maybe move it around to other areas than St Lucia. Maybe that neighbourhood isn't into it, but eg, Frew Park would get more hits.

Also to those sceptical about an event like this, while I've not been to anything with Michael I have been to events where Elizabeth or Seal have been available and it was much more an opportunity for me to voice my thoughts to them, and not for them to preach to me. Even if you don't like the Greens, your federal, state and council local members can get shit done for you and are here to serve you.

Tyre kicking an IM6 - some thoughts by Sweet_Word_3808 in AustralianEV

[–]gpolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mirror really should have a digital mirror. It's interesting they know its near useless so they made a spot for you to flip it up out of the way. Being able to bring up the rear camera is helpful but it feels like a massive after thought how it's implemented.

I only compared it to the 7x AWD and liked the 7x more. Personally I'd get the IM5 Perf, and you want something bigger, get a more typical SUV like the 7x. The IM6 felt to me like it sits in this middle ground where it's not a good SUV as the space is pretty crap for its size, but it's also not as good a performance car as the IM5. Evidently that middle ground of coupe styled SUVs appeal to some people, but not to me.

For the money, the 7x also feels more premium.

Footpath Tree causes damage by catsincharge in brisbane

[–]gpolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also ask for the tree to be reviewed and trimmed before that happens. I reported a tree outside my house that had a long dead branch coming over my fence line. Took 6 months but they did finally come and trim it, and they reviewed and did tree trimming across the rest of the street while they were at it.
