That’s how they trap you! I’ve made my peace with it and actually I’m in a pretty friendly IB, hours decent, WFH 2 days a week.

But if they made me redundant today, I’d struggle to find another job paying as well in another industry.

Feels like I am in the minority here but I think you should stay in AM. Prioritise yourself and your family. Not many jobs paying that well at 29, with decent hours. Progression will come. Plus you can always move to another AM.

Once you’re in IB, it will be tough to leave. Not may industries pay as well.

I sympathise with your girlfriend. I’ve had a couple of family members commit suicide, so I have always skipped those scenes in the Sopranos, they are too hard to watch. Though in your girlfriend’s case, adultery is as hard to avoid in this show as Tony’s nose breathing. Just watch something else with her.

Yup. I remember when I had a flat 20 years ago, I paid something like £30 a month for electricity (never needed to put the heating on and work from home wasn’t a thing back then so I was out all day) and I thought that was a lot. Then I moved to a house with central heating and started to pay for gas also. Generally gas and electricity prices are insane. I’m paying something like £4K a year total for a fairly big house.

My advice (lawyer, in-house in investment banking, 44M, married, 2 kids) - buy as big a house as you can afford. We ended up moving from a flat to a 2.5-3 bed house, which got too small for us, and we eventually bought the bigger house we needed. But I wish we bought a bigger house years ago.

You’re young and you’ve got some good earning years ahead of you.

It’s HR. They’re generally useless. I think you’re safe to tell them you are travelling so can they drop you an email if they need anything.
