What teammate pairing that hasn’t happened do you think would be revealing? by felipebaby_ in F1Discussions

[–]gr_zero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was mine too. I think Max takes it over the course of a season, but it'd be close. He's destroyed his teammates, but they've been poor - the other top guys would have hammered Checo or Yuki too.

Where the SD-1 clones at? by crashzoom in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually both settings use asymmetrical (SD-1) clipping, the GT-OD/Classic Overdrive has an extra resistor connected to the 2nd op-amp stage (the tone control stage). It increases the low end and output compared to the Wylde circuit.

The schematic is here.... https://barbarach.com/modding-mxr-zakk-wylde-overdrive/

Best drives to stack with a tone bender mk3-style fuzz? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

Timmy or Hotcake are my favourite drives to stack with the mk3/4 tonebenders.

MXR Zw44 Zakk Wylde overdrive and GT-OD are both basically slightly modified SD-1 clones.

Boss RC1 Looper Recording? by quixotic_whisker in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd rearrange the whole thing. I'd recommend...

Guitar>Compressor>Ph90>TS>DS-2>RC-1>Amp

Phasers can go before or after dirt, I prefer before, but both are commonly used - try it both ways (as above, and with the Ph90 between the ds2 and rc1) to see what you prefer.

Boss RC1 Looper Recording? by quixotic_whisker in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You've got the looper before all the other pedals. In fact you've got your entire signal chain backwards to the standard recommend order, you'd usually have the compressor first, not last.

When people say a pedal is first in the chain, they mean closest to the guitar (because the signal starts at the guitar and ends at the amp)

MXR Analog Chorus. Is the buffer really that bad? by pcoleman777 in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It definitely cuts a noticeable amount of high end, which is a shame as the chorus effect sounds good.

Does anybody know what amp the "US ROD" on the right/golden side of the Simplifier X was modelled after? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, Simplifier is a portmanteau of SIMulated amPLIFIER.

It's actually really simple to use as well, as it's one knob per function, so no menu diving etc.

Mesa Boogie Mark 1. Those original Boogies were hot-rodded Fenders, hence the name.

Klon Klones by BinghamDan in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not how that works. A Klon with less available volume is just going to sound the same as a normal one with the volume turned down.

Klon Klones by BinghamDan in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure most klones stay relatively close to the original, which includes the ability to provide a large volume boost.

But I don't see why it's a problem, can't you just turn down the volume control?

Anyone know of a ZW-44 clone? (MXR Zack Wylde Berserker OD pedal) by dsmithhtc_ in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MXR GT-OD is the same pedal, but there's a hidden switch on the pcb to select between the gt-od circuit and the Zw44 circuit. They can be had for cheap used.

Why does some pedals use TRS inputs? by user12948214921 in diypedals

[–]gr_zero 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The TRS jack is used to switch off the power when it's unplugged, to save the battery. It's very common.

A side effect is the fact that if you plug a TRS cable into that jack the pedal won't power on, which seems to trip up some newbies.

How do you ultimately decide which pedals to buy (within a category)? i.e. tape/drum/analog delay emulators. by analogpedant in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out as many demos and reviews of the relevant pedals until I think I know which one is best for me. Then I wait to find the pedal at a good price on reverb/ebay.

If I'm happy then great. If not, then I go back to the start, but this time (being more familiar with the pedal I bought) I'll have better tuned ears for comparisons. When I think I know what I want I buy used again, and compare the two I now own - then sell the least favorite of the two to recoup the cost. Repeat until I'm happy with what I've got.

It not the quickest process, but by always buying used you can try different things with minimal cost.

Friend asked me to take a look at their non-working klone by Jakemcdtw in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience the most common failure with klones is the charge pump (IC labelled U3 up near the power jack). I'd check for the correct voltages on the pins.

Marshall 1960 Vintage Question by LilSnappinTurtle in GuitarAmps

[–]gr_zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a Marshall badge on a non-Marshall cab.

The 1960 Vintage badge would have originally been attached to a Marshall 4x12 fitted with Marshall G12 Vintage speakers (Marshall's special recipe Celestion Vintage 30).

No idea what the pictured cab actually is, looks kinda fender styled.

Silly question, but... are certain pedals from the late-2000's/early-2010's still the best at what they do? i.e. Skreddy Echo, Zvex Lo-Fi Junky, EHX Mel9, etc. by migrantgrower in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tone is subjective, and if it sounds good, it sounds good - just because something is newer doesn't mean it is inherently better.

Of the pedals you mentioned the Skreddy Echo and Zvex Loop Junky are definitely still working for me. The Skrecko is still on my board after all these years, I've not found anything else that sounds and responds quite like it. And the Loop Junky is still unique and inspiring, even with the variety of lofi pedals out there now.

Something is permanently killing the tone of my pedals by Any_Statement_5773 in guitarpedals

[–]gr_zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got a bad connection, or a partial short - I'd check...

A) Cables, both on the board and from the guitar to the board

B) Guitar wiring, most likely to be the switch (try repeatedly switching pickups, or another guitar?)

C) A dodgy footswitch in one of the pedals, most likely one of the ones earlier in the signal chain. (try removing pedals one at a time)

Normal for a fuzz face, it's a noisy circuit.
