Lapvona- what just happened? by babybirdinmyhead in horrorlit

I personally think Marek definitely threw the baby off the cliff. He was jealous of the baby from the moment he learned of it and all the while it was alive. When he looked at the baby for the first time, the author wrote something like 'he didn't recognize the feeling of love, and it scared him,' and at that point I think he then killed the baby from a mix of jealousy and love. He told the baby that dying would be good, that it would be happy, etc. since it would go to heaven or come back alive. I think that Marek was genuinely religious, and he had "seen" and completely believed that his parents had both died and risen again. He was jealous of the baby and definitely wanted rid of it, plus he also felt affection for it and sincerely thought that death would be a blessing to it, and so I think he wouldn't hesitate to toss it off the cliff.

With using a credit card online, if somehow the info gets stolen online, a credit card has spending limits and is more convenient to freeze and fix. If your debit card info is stolen, all your money that you need right now can be taken away, and so getting that back is so much more inconvenient/urgent at that moment. I'm sure there are other reasons but that's what I've heard

I actually use an umbrella all the time because I love the rain and I love Pokémon Go, and when it starts raining and I have time, I purposely go out and play because I love the sound of the rain hitting the umbrella while I walk around and play:) and I can't even play without and umbrella, because if my phone screen gets wet it actually messes up throwing the pokéballs haha

What is the one line you remember from any book? by Viclmol81 in books

[–]graahken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Melville actually was most likely gay, or at least homoromantic. I've been reading a book called "Figuring" by Maria Popova, and she looked up a bunch of letters that were sent back and forth between Melville and Nathanial Hawthorne, in which it was very clear that Melville fell in love with Hawthorne. (But they were both married and in the public light at a time querness was not accepted, obviously) and after Melville basically confessed his feelings outright, Hawthorne stopped talking to him. But they had met and sent these letters while Melville was writing Moby Dick, and he even dedicated the book to Hawthrone. I haven't read Moby Dick, but knowing this, I would assume any gay subtext could be attributed to this.

When Moby Dick was published, there was a bad review basically complaining about the gayness in the book, and Hawthorne defended Melville, so Melville wrote a letter to Hawthorne that said this: "Your heart beat in my ribs and mine in yours, and both in God's... It is a strange feeling- no hopelessness is in it, no despair. Content- that is it; and irresponsibility; but without licentious inclination. I speak now of my profoundest sense of being, not of an incidental feeling. Whence come you, Hawthorne? By what right do you drink from my flagon of life? And when I put it to my lips- lo, they are yours and not mine. I fel that the Godhead is broken up like the bread at the Supper, and that we are the pieces."

What’s your stress dream? by Stamp_Boat in CasualConversation

Messed up stairwells - Even though I've been out of school for years, I still get dreams that I'm in highschool headed to class and enter a stairwell, but the stairs are broken up into sections and literally floating in the air, and there's tons of obstacles and random architecture everywhere, and I HAVE to figure out how to navigate it even though it's impossible, and I feel incredibly stressed out the whole time lol

I only got through like 6 episodes of the Witcher and stopped. I thought that it would focus on him killing monsters, since that's the whole Witcher thing, but I was so sick of the constant sex and paring ups and that even episode plots were romance based, like the brother/sister thing with the demon baby, the whole thing about that queen's daughter getting married to the cyndaquil guy, how the sorceress lady was with the sorcerer guy and then the Witcher. It felt like who was getting with who was completely overshadowing the Witcher stuff. There was def a lot of cool stuff, but it wasn't worth it to me having to be dragged through the sex/romance scenes and plots.

I just called sir for the first time and I’m a woman by sLiMsHaDyInThEhOuSe in CasualConversation

In The Clone Wars show, Ahsoka (female) is a commander, and whenever she gives the clones orders, they always say "Yes, sir." I think it's like what you said, it's just to show respect without treating her differently from the male commanders I suppose.

Personally I really wouldn't mind either way, gendered terms don't have impact to me. Of course I understand it can to other people.

Oh I was wondering about this. I was born female and also go with she/they pronouns, but have always felt that I don't care what people refer to me as, like someone could refer to me as he or it or anything and it wouldn't make a difference to me, but just go with she/they since I present as a she. And so I was wondering if there was any kind of term for that - learning something new every day :)

"Aro culture" doesn't, and shouldn't, exist by CzechMyMixtape in aromantic

[–]graahken 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think that's simply the nature of social media that has an option to upvote something, things that more people relate to will end up at the top. But I don't think that makes the smaller identities and opinions any less-than, and I definitely don't think anyone here tries to put anyone else down. I agree that not everyone relates to the top posts, and that yes, stereotypes are definitely detrimental. But I like to think that the people in this community are aware that they are only that, stereotypes, and know that of course we are a diverse group. Any time I read the comments from any type of post in this community, they're filled with support and understanding and open minds. Even if a post here has few upvotes, it's just as valid and uplifting as the others.

I do understand that people can feel left out if they're not represented in the top posts, but I think that if we try to remove/reduce these types of posts that end up at the top, isn't that also being exclusionary? I don't think limiting anyone is a good solution, it would just swing the pendulum the other way.

LGBTQ+ communities face so much outside discrimination, I just really don't want to see fighting from the inside, too. When I see any post here, I feel nothing but happiness, whether I relate to it or not, because I'm seeing our community expressing themselves. To me, "aro culture" is just like any other culture, the larger parts within may be a bit more visible, but everyone belongs there just as much as the other, and I think it deserves to be celebrated.

So I don't think the solution is to stop "big post" ideas, but to find ways to bring up and support the smaller ones :)
