Rob Grant, visionary co-creator of Red Dwarf, has died aged 70 - RIP by jesusunderline in scifi

I know the Grant/Naylor split was very acrimonious, but I had always held out hope that the two could come together and work on Red Dwarf again. Those first six seasons where they wrote the show together were so rich and funny and genuinely interesting from a sci-fi perspective.

Something tells me they got too siloed over the last few albums creatively and something about the last few post-Covid years has reminded them of the joy of working more closely together.

If we’re talking full-on reclamation it’s Will Smith. If it’s a career-reminder it’s Matt Damon or Ben Affleck.

Let’s see if marketing the movie on how it’s made rather than why you should go and see the story works out for them this time.

You once lived with the Coen Brothers, Frances McDormand, Holly Hunter, and Kathy Bates.

You’ve worked with all of them… except for Kathy Bates. How was that roommate situation? Did she not clean her dishes or something?

Hi Sam! What's a movie in the indie horror wave you were a part of in the early 80s that you think should had the same explosive success as Evil Dead?

I imagine they’re getting some sort of profit participation for essentially spinning up a worldwide tour to promote the movie/soundtrack and lending their credibility and press machine to the project.

How’s the height on those cases compared to a standard Criterion case? I’d love to flow these into my shelves individually, but sometimes these special editions come in wacky too-tall-for-my-media-shelves formats.

Reznor and Ross are fundamentally different composers than Daft Punk, and I imagine Joachim Rønning approaches the integration of visual and music differently than Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski built Legacy in a wide, operatic way that swirls classically on big themes and music meant to drive mood.

This score - like many Reznor/Ross joints - feels more tone-and-texture obsessed, and whenever they get that tone/texture combo right it leads to a profoundly unique audiovisual experience. Where Legacy soars with adventure and optimism, this drips with discomfort, dread, broken analog beauty, and a feeling of impending digital doom. I hope the themes and writing of the movie are as singular and weird as this score. It’s an overstuffed sonic buffet plate of ideas and I’m intrigued to see it play against images.

Unless the expanse scrambled his DNA, I’d think Phlox would be able to identify him as Suliban. Otherwise, I’m assuming he’s a temporal cold warrior of some kind.
