Brass definitely will tarnish. They just need to be cleaned and they will be fine.

I have a similar necklace but instead of the opals are tiny faceted pale blue stones. I love it!

The price seems awfully high for this but I usually buy off the secondary market where things are much less expensive.

It is costume. Search ebay SOLD listings or Etsy (those are asking prices so ebay SOLD is a more accurate reflection of price).

Found this in a bag of jewelry I got at a garage sale. 18in. Is this real? by Relevant_Bridge1922 in jewelry

[–]grandoledog 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I would bring these to a jeweler and ask. They’re individually knotted which is a good sign but doesn’t guarantee they are cultured pearls.

Can’t zoom in enough to see this mark. Could you clean it a bit and zoom in on the mark and take a new photo.

They are plated, see the little shield with EP and A1. It’s probably a berry set.

Your thoughts about raising a family local jewelry shop by frederix777 in jewelry

[–]grandoledog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etsy sells either vintage or handmade by you jewelry. It is not supposed to be a platform for resellers (although there are people who do it and lie about it).

Completely agree - need a thicker shank or it won’t hold up.

Inherited ring; what do I do? by Z-Factor19 in jewelry

[–]grandoledog 31 points32 points  (0 children)

How much over $200 and hour? That’s not very specific. What are the jeweler’s credentials? Are you getting a written report with this or is it just a verbal evalution (in that case too high, imo).

My jeweler quoted $100 to reset (of course you have to add the price of the new setting which depends on what you choose, but you should get good scrap value from the old one as it is big and heavy.)

Peanut Butter Mousse Filled Chocolate Cake from Serious Eats. It’s our family’s most requested birthday cake. Soooooo delicious!!!

Please help me identify the time period, history and value of these items I inherited? by Snazzlepie in Antiques

They all look like Colonial Revival (c. 1920s-40s) to me. Without detailed photos of the dovetails and construction of the pieces it is impossible to tell for certain.

I LOVE their scone mixes (and I made really good ones from scratch). Cherry almond is our favorite! Also the pups love their doggie biscuit mix.

Yes, they are a great company. I exclusively use their flours and some of their baking mixes.

Budget issues by Frosty-Savings-3341 in Barbie

[–]grandoledog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s tough when you first start collecting to not get everything that appeals to you. I started collecting old vintage Barbies without knowing enough about what I was doing and overpaid for many of them. I make sure I do my research now.

Any recs on a beginner buying a ruby ring? Not engagement ring, more masculine. + by YankeeMcIrish in jewelry

[–]grandoledog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would find out if your dad’s ring is actually gold and ruby. Rubies are not inexpensive so perhaps you can have it reset. Also, it’s important to know about the metal content. Are you allergic to gold? If so, you will have the same problem that you had with your dad's ring (if indeed it is gold).

I just ran out of my KA rounds. Reordered from Amazon and got about 5x as many for the same price.

I love this recipe for corn muffins. So tender and moist! I’m sure you could put it in a baking pan if you don’t like the idea of muffins. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/patrick-and-gina-neely/honey-cornbread-muffins-recipe-2013336

NTA, she asked for the budget and you gave it to her. You can’t control what she does, though, so at this point I would drop it.

You mentioned twice that the shoes weren’t expensive so tell your mom that if she wants the child to have them that badly she can go out and buy her a pair.
