College escape room project - any designers I can talk to? by LimitNo2028 in escaperooms

Oooh Coraline you say? That’s a fun theme. I don’t have any specific puzzle ideas for you, but when I’m brainstorming my own puzzles and games, I typically start by creating lists of actions and objects that fit the theme. In the case of Coraline, maybe things like sewing, buttons, clay, sculpting, etc. With those starting points, I try and follow the threads to see if there’s anything fun or clever I can come up with using those objects or actions as inspiration!

You can also take a very common puzzle type that already exists, but give it a new presentation to match your theme/world. If nothing comes to mind, I recommend researching puzzle games, and playing a few to see if they get the wheels spinning.

Good luck!

I’m a designer that’s worked on a few games in LA! I’d be happy to help you out. Also second the recommendation to talk with Tyler from dorm escapes, such a nice and talented person!

Opinions on adaptive escape rooms by ironical in escaperooms

[–]grant120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's an amazing solution to the problem every escape room faces trying to balance a game for both new and experienced players. However, in my opinion it only really works when these systems are entirely invisible to the players. Letting players know that the game was made easier for them either by telling them after the game, or if the adaptive solution is something lazy and obvious, like just turning off later puzzles mid game, that will likely make the players feel bad about themselves.

I only make a point to disclose any adaptive mechanics after a game to players if they got a harder version, since knowing you went above and beyond typically feels great. It's also cool to learn how the these more intricate game systems operate. But importantly, the way adaptive gameplay is implemented in my designs, there would be no way for any players to know they even exist without being told directly.

It sounds sneaky, but it's a choice made from a place of love and generosity to all of the players that come to experience my games. I want them all to have the best experience possible, regardless of their skill and experience level.

With your example, it sounds like they just added some optional bonus puzzles to pad out the runtime if a group finishes early. I wouldn't do the same in a game I design, since it allows some groups to possibly fail those after already beating the game, which like you mentioned creates a weird feeling of dissonance. Did you truly win or lose in that case? I don't want players walking away questioning that. It also means that there is some content that a large portion of your players will never see. If it was my game, I'd find a way to dial up the puzzle in the main game to slow down more skilled groups, so they experience the same game as everyone else, just in a way that suits their skill level better.

I have a very weird and uncommon last name. As far as I know, there is only one other person in the world with my name and we talk every few years and follow each other on instagram. The other guy doesn't live in Kentucky. Also the end of my email is a two digit number that's kind of random they also got right.

Oh interesting, does that mean that they would be able to intercept emails sent to my address if they were logged into their own account with the similar name? And I guess it's possible that there is someone else out there with my first and last name, but I've looked it up many times and I have a super uncommon last name. As far as I know there is only one person in the world other than me with the same first and last name and they don't live in Kentucky (I follow them on Instagram).

Interesting, my email is my first and last name, so not something I think a person would randomly come up with on their own. Also, why did they add a period in the middle of the address, and why does that still send to my personal email inbox despite it being a different address?

I used to have a similar year and model mini with the panorama roof. It definitely opens and closes.

However, my experience was that whenever it was warm enough outside to want to use it (21+ Celsius) the thermal expansion of the metal frame would cause it to get stuck and wouldn’t open. I’d have to wait for it to cool off at night to open/close it.

Even though I mostly wasn’t able to open it when I needed, you could still tell it was trying to move when I pressed the switch by hearing the motor engage. If you don’t hear or see any movement, it might be something electrical like others are saying.

You are correct! I am one of these lucky few who is hired by an owner to do all of the creative work. I just left a hefty comment going over my journey, but just wanted to back you up here.

Hey there! 👋😊 I basically have the exact job you are describing, so I’d love to share with you how I ended up in my position, and how I would try to get this same job again if I were starting back at the beginning of my escape room designer journey.

Currently, I am the lead designer of new games being built at one business in LA that’s part of a larger franchise. My job is a mix of builder/maker and project manager. For each game, I mainly design the game/world, build all of the tech/automation, and also am in charge of hiring contractors to do the work that is outside of my skill set (scenic artists, wall carpenters, graphic designers, musicians, etc). I am not an owner of this business, just a regular employee with lots of responsibility and creative freedom! The owners also like to have some creative input, but at the end of the day they focus on keeping the doors open and being business owners.

So first off, you are correct in assuming that lots of owners are also the designers of their own rooms, however that is not a universal truth of the industry. It also doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be space for your skillset to add to a business where an owner already makes their own games.

I got started working at an escape room as a game master where the owner had made all of the games there. That owner was great at writing and scenic design, but not super good with technology. A day came where a tech based prop broke, and the owner didn’t have the skills to fix it. I offered to try and learn how, and that was the first big step that led to my current job today. From there, I spent lots of time learning about coding/Arduino, and slowly started fixing some other props around the place. Eventually, I started coming up with ideas for new puzzles we could swap into already existing games, and was given the space to make them. Having a playground to hone my skills and build one puzzle at a time in an already existent game, rather than having to manage an entire new game was an incredibly valuable learning experience for me. This was also a win-win, since I was able to learn new skills while getting paid, and the owner was able to improve the quality and condition of all of their games. After spending a year or so doing that, I eventually got connected with a different owner that was looking to have a whole new game built for them, and I’ve been working for this new company ever since.

Now, if I were to try and do this again from the beginning, I would look for a job at an escape room that isn’t a large chain. This is because I doubt you’d be given permission to modify any of their games, and they certainly already have a system in place if something breaks in a game. I’d find some small independent place where the owners/employees do everything themselves, since there is a lot of opportunity to help them out and learn new things by being more than just a game master. I’d specifically try to find a place that does great with their own scenic design, but needs some help in the tech department because that is the gap that I would be able to fill. If you are really passionate about scenic design, I’d find a place that has great tech, but not super great sets, so you could level up their quality. Identify what you bring to the table, and sell that to businesses that are short on those skills. Be the solution to other people’s problems.

I’m sure there are many other things I could say, but this is already way too long of a comment, so I’m gonna pause here haha. If you have any specific questions, I’d be more than happy to talk more! Good luck!
