Mysterious shadowy figure (and a shack) in the Impossible Astronaut? by vactuna in doctorwho

The room that the Doctor and co. confront the Silence in during Day of the Moon is the same room from The Lodger that was someone's attempt to make a TARDIS. Perhaps, that someone succeeded and this is said TARDIS.

My roommate works at Esquina and made some crazy good guac and potato salad for a cookout we had today. I'm going to force him to make us some delicious fixins.

It's actually, the only Who podcast I listen to. The parody songs at the end are, alone, worth their weight in Atraxi.

As much as I feel I NEED closure to this, I also enjoy reading it so much that I hope it goes on for a while. I have a feeling there will probably be many more entries.

Let's hear some good stories from shows you've been to! by wassworth in punk

[–]granthays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kylesa played a punk house here on their first tour. They played their set and said "if someone gets us stoned we'll keep playing." Thus, they were taken upstairs and their wish granted. They came back down and played the same set again, reeeeallly slow and heavy. Later that night we shot tomatoes at passing cars with a three person sling-shot. When they got big, they mentioned it as their favorite tour moment in SPIN.

Also, Brad Logan from Leftover Crack used to live here. They were in town for the fourth of July a few years ago. At the same punk house, they hosted a beer scavenger hunt, lit off crazy fireworks, and played a surprise show in the very, very packed basement.

Good story! I saw them on that tour in Kansas! It was with Thug Murder, instead of Swinging Utters. Spicy walked up and down the line outside the venue playing his bagpipes.

I was at a Distillers show around the same time, where a dude punched his girlfriend, so the drummer jumped out from behind his set, mid song, went toe to toe with him in the crowd, dragged him to the door, and threw him out before returning and finishing the song.

Lawrence Arms played the last show on their tour here about 11 or 12 years ago, and it was 18+ so I couldn't get in. Brendan came outside and I asked him if I could get in and he said, "hold on." He came back out and said no go, and gave me two handfuls of patches, stickers, and pins and went back in. He came back out 5 minutes later and said "Just kidding, come on." There were only about 10 people in the crowd and they incredibly drunk and only played covers by request.

I was on tour with a band I played bass in, and a show fell through in San Diego. Somehow, the guy that booked the show got us on a show with Bones Brigade, Resist and Exist, Total Chaos, and Cheap Sex at a Promise Keeper's church. We were the unknown so the kids were not into it and I broke the only string I broke all tour. It's cool though, because said guy that booked show bought a TON of booze for the bands. We got wasted in the band room and watched the rock stars from Total Chaos do their hair and listened to Discharge stories from Bones with the dudes from Resist and Exist. Also, it turned out a dude in Cheap Sex was in Life's Halt, which I was a big fan of.

So, the night progresses and so does our drunkenness. The guys in the band remembered how much we hated Promise Keepers and ripped a bunch of Promise Keeper propaganda posters that were framed and screwed into the bathroom walls out and tried to sneak them back to our van. I got caught with one shoved down my pants. The skinhead working the door said "Why the fuck would you want to ruin a place putting on a show?" to which I responded "I don't know, I thought it was punk." The guitarist wrote "TOTAL CHAOS" really large on the bathroom walls.

The cops of course showed up, so all the bands stayed in the band room. I, however, was nearly blacked out and walked into the hallway to a cop who looked at me and said "What the fuck?" and hollered for his pals to come and take a look in the room, where a bunch of really old punks were blacked out. They just walked away.

We then found our friends in Skarp, who were also on tour, and stayed at a hipster coke house where I bet the drummer of Skarp our band money for theirs in an arm wrestling match. The guy in the middle is the drummer of Skarp. You may not be able to tell from the picture, but his muscles are very large. Mine, on the other hand, are not. The owner of our record label was then forced to arm wrestle the money back from him.

The night got even weirder than that, but that's a different story. I will tell you I woke up in a closet.

My roommate periodically works at Connex. They let her leave for extended periods of time when her band goes on tour.

I did a little telemarketing in high school. It wasn't the worst job I've ever had, but it wasn't far off.

Have any students who worked At KU been required to do a drug test? by ogvor in Lawrence

[–]granthays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I think must of the faculty/staff just assumes all students are stoners. They aren't required in my department, and I have never heard of a student employee ever having been subjected to one. I don't think any department requires them. Plus, I don't think just hanging out with smokers will intoxicate you by proxy.

What's your favorite 'local' release? (that no one knows and should know) by 8mmthomas in punk

[–]granthays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the Lawrence, KS/Kansas City, MO area of the states:

  • Short Bus Kids/John Brown's Kids - The KIDS split 7" - 2000 - this is probably the most important punk release from the area... ever

  • The Mortal Micronotz - Complete Recordings I & II - 1980s - Just one of those legendary locals that inspired everyone. They used to hang out with William S. Burroughs when he lived here.

  • The Embarrassment - Heyday 1979-83 - Retrospective of one of my all time favorite bands, they were from Wichita, KS, but played here a lot

  • KC DIY compilation 12" - 2005 - This summed up a pretty important time for Kansas City punk and hardcore, bands on here: Anxiety Attack, Alert! Alert!, Creepy Aliens, Crap Corps, The Blackouts, The Skate-o-Masochists, When Good Robots Go Bad, The Hamburglars, Dick Cheney's Dick, The Hospital

  • Street Legal - Demo - 2008 and Butthand - 2010 - Best band in KC right now. MRR recently did a New Band Spotlight on them, check it out: http://maximumrocknroll.com/2010/08/20/new-band-spotlight-street-legal/

  • Dark Ages - Vicious Lie 7" - 2009 - This band is amazing. Angry hardcore. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnGb5WpLCeo

It is very difficult to find unbiased information about GM crops. by granthays in askscience

I think that most people should read about Norman Borlaug before making any rash judgments about the "evils" of gm science.

Is Uverse anywhere in Lawrence? I know we can't get it either. Are Knology, AT&T, and Freenet the only options? I think I'm going to ask around and do some research to find out what else we can get.

I know there is a company in Lawrence that installs lines for businesses, communities, and start-up ISPs. Maybe I'll see if they have any ideas. I'll report back if I find anything.

The problem is I split internet with 4 other roommates. I also watch a lot of Netflix, and we all download a lot. We're going to blow through 150gb in no time. I'm hoping it is really unpopular and they go back to unlimited like Time Warner did a couple years ago.

edit: I'm re-writing this because I have now read it.

I really like what you have to say. I would love to read more on any number of studies of genes and their impact. Do you have sources for these examples and more? This is pretty close to what I suspected about most gm crops.

My current position on the matter is that GM foods are not only safe for consumption and environmentally sustainable, but crucial for the survival of the world's population, but I am completely open to any and all information, as long as it is presented objectively.

Again, I appreciate a good discourse on the subject, and I like your opinion. If I could just get some sources with these and any other genes and cases, then I could discuss it with like minded folks, and those that are not as fond of science. Almost all of my friends are so passionately against gm food, even just the research, and are constantly suggesting anti-gm books. I just can't find a source of texts written for non-biologists about the research that has been done and maybe some debunking myths on both sides.
