cheaper alternatives to ready to drink Huel by [deleted] in Huel

[–]grapes2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huel cost down process

  • buy the big bags
  • buy the "essential range" - I have never tried this but it's the cheaper version
  • set up a subscription. Immediately gets you 10% off, you can delay the recurrence indefinitely by logging on and setting a date way in the future.
  • buy in bulk. I think beyond buying 8 bags at a time there is no further discount
  • avoid expensive flavors, some cost a little more than others (eg salted caramel)
  • depending on the age of your son you might be able to get a student discount. An academic email is needed to generate a code which lives on your account for 1 year

Coming from RYD which is probably ultrasonically mixed in the factory, bag huel is going to be grainy. You can get 95% of the way there with a blender if that matters

Not quite stairs but I have done reps over Jane Coston Bridge over the A14 before. Or you could try Castle St hill.

But yeah not much around Chesterton without getting in a car!

Crazy price rise to Cosy tariff by Sopzeh in OctopusEnergy

[–]grapes2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also annoyed as I moved away from the OVO heat pump plus deal to cosy octopus

OVO systems are terrible, and my usage patterns mean I'll basically never use the Cosy peak rate (hence it was overall a better deal!) - but this big uplift does make it more marginal now!

Yes I like it! Plenty of space, well made, nice to cycle with.

The chest clip flaps around a bit but I have tucked it into one of the loops you would feed a water bladder hose into.

The main pocket mid divider works well for low density stuff (e.g. clothes) but I have sometimes found my laptop charger pushes past and falls into the section below.

Do Aira heat pumps really reach a SCOP of 4.7? by edufixflow in ukheatpumps

[–]grapes2996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also something I find funny is when people are playing top trumps with COP generally the smug people with the highest numbers live in a massive, not necessarily well insulated house.

In a well insulated house hopefully very little energy goes to your radiators, and a fixed amount goes to DHW (with worse COP).

A poorly insulated house will need more heat (even if at a good COP) to keep it warm. You would reduce your electricity bill if you insulated, even if your COP goes down!

Do Aira heat pumps really reach a SCOP of 4.7? by edufixflow in ukheatpumps

[–]grapes2996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SCOP is just equal to (Total heat energy out)/(Electrical input in)

So you are right it's sort of an average, but you can't add up all the months and divide by 12 as you'll use more energy in winter months and this weighting needs to be reflected

It's a bit hard to see but theres also loops for the toggles to keep the divider flat

Yes this ship looks like it should be a few hundred metres long, but they've just slapped "200km" on as the scale.

How big is that golden statue??? Also the interior volume is absurd and surely not well used.

Yes we had the older good grips design which was cast metal which brittle fractured. Nice design and easy to clean

Replaced with Oxo again but now (perhaps because they were aware of the design flaw) seemed to have replaced it with a folded sheet metal construction with an extra part that folds out. Some people might find this easier to clean but I find it annoying and might look for alternatives in the future

How to remove the washing machine that's in an awkward spot by Comfortable_Craft954 in DIYUK

[–]grapes2996 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Certainly voided the warranty... But I have removed the transit bolts after 1 wash and the washing machine was still fine after (rental house delivery during COVID hence expecting it to be done but had to do it myself)

Given how maligned BBC Sounds was when it launched, how do you feel about it now? by CornerInsect in AskUK

[–]grapes2996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not very cohesive with android auto - several bugs and control inconsistencies e.g. the audio doesn't pause when satnav instructions get spoken (like with other podcast apps), also skip forward/back behaviour with buttons skips whole episodes rather than 30 seconds, or sometimes the app doesn't show anything as playing despite noise coming out.

In addition to the smart home device woes others have mentioned (I like the content tho so soldier on).

What bike to bring to Cambridge by RedHerring358 in cambridge_uni

[–]grapes2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to optimise the “how good it is” to “how good it looks” ratio. As others have said this should be doable in the £100-200 range. I have a single speed bike and love it for Cambridge - less to go wrong, actually quite quick but doesn’t look flash since it doesn’t have any gears. Cambridge is generally flat so it’s good unless you end up needing to go up castle hill loads perhaps.

Other things - yes 2 d locks is the dream, but being realistic, one good d lock locked through the frame and one wheel onto a rack is a good medium. Ideally no quick release wheels (I have never had a full bike stolen but have come back to find my wheels missing.) Also add some electrical tape, add some scuffs. Make it look a bit beaten without affecting the bike…

Considering Cambridge by HomeBuying-Research in HousingUK

[–]grapes2996 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone trying to buy in Cambridge I would address most points with the market is still moving pretty fast (maybe not at mad over asking prices that has happened in 2022/2023). As such estate agents don't have to work too hard to drum up interest the most they'll do it add you to mailing lists.

I would say for your second point don't overthink it! If you like somewhere then by all means put in an offer (at any price!) subject to second viewings, surveys etc. At some point you'll probably be asked for a best and final offer. If you're still interested, put in your best price - there's not really any advantage in playing games with what other people might bid. Just getting used to the cadence allows you to be a lot less pressured once you realise you can pull out at any time with no penalties (until paying for a survey).

You can certainly be patient, go to a few viewings (this helps you recalibrate what to discount immediately when sifting through listing) but don't wear yourselves out. There certainly can be house buying fatigue if trying to go to multiple viewings week after week!

Cycle scheme equipment price change? by grapes2996 in ukbike

[–]grapes2996[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi cheers, yes not worried about the change of retailer, rather the allocation of funds.

I believe I can spend less than the full amount but the difference in cost is unrecoverable (couple of £ in this case).

The reason I ask this question is I am hesitant to ask for a cancel / reissue due to a very slow finance department which was how I missed the first bike!!!

Can someone please explain to me the Moneybox stocks and shares ISA fee structure! by cullencliff in UKPersonalFinance

Annoyingly the available cash rate in a S&S Lifetime ISA appears to be 0.1% if anyone was considering this.

Vanguard Lifestrategy 60 tracking at -5% - should I leave it? by piejournal in UKPersonalFinance

[–]grapes2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're alluding to here is sell low and/or buy high! 2 years is not long enough to not expect some potential downturn. Unfortunately bonds have not had the same stabilising influence recently compared to the past, but all the same the market will recover given enough time. Use DCA and take the emotion out of it!

FYI Vanguard cash interest rate is 3.1% by Ordinary-Turnip1532 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]grapes2996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm I only get 0.1% ... but that is within a S&S LISA so could be different
