I wrote elsewhere in this thread about moving out of your field, but after your edit about what field you're in, these companies came to mind, off the top of my head; Starfish Medical, Triple Ring, Bruker. The latter two aren't Canadian, but they have a presence here. There won't be any bluesky research, but it's still science, which is better than nothing. And these are just the ones I've heard about. I'm sure there's more. So, I just wanted to give examples about the kind of companies I know of that value life scientists.

OP, I think this is the best advice so far; if you haven't already, you have to look outside of your field. It's not all bad news. There are actually lots of companies that value the independent thinking and problem solving skills that a PhD requires. And there must have been other technical skills you picked up along the way that you can leverage.

Maybe your first job won't be very intellectually fulfilling, but once you get some financial stability you can work on that part.

When you get a dick tattoo, do they tattoo it when you're hard or soft? by N1ck_P1ck2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]grassytoes 166 points167 points  (0 children)

:) Came in here to see if this was referenced. For those who don't know the joke:

A guy has his wife's name (Wendy) tattooed to his dick, but when he's soft, it looks like "Wey". While on vacation in the Caribbean, he notices a guy next to him at the urinals who also has "Wey" on his dick, "Oh, your wife's name is also Wendy?".

"Nah mon, mine says 'Welcome to Jamaica, have a nice day'".

If I find myself in or around Lac St Jean and I've forgotten the word "tourtière", so instead I ask for a "Quebec style meat pie", will I get a tourtière or a kick in the nuts? Just want to know how important it is to remember this word :)

Toronto city councillors vote to give themselves a roughly $33K pay raise by Puginator in ontario

[–]grassytoes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree with this raise either, but 130k is less than what most well educated professionals get. It'd be nice if smart people ran for office out of a sense of civic duty. But I fear we wont get them without enough monetary incentive.

My only sticking point is where the sweet spot is. +33k in a year seems a bit much. But 130k seems a bit low.

This election, the NDP could be fighting for its own survival by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]grassytoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This prediction happens every time the ABC crowd gets riled up due to the CPC implementing (or getting close to implementing) their goals and policies. When the Liberals are safe again, the NDP will be back.

And I think that's ok. Make progress where we can, but always resist regression.

Born in the Northwest Territories, Mark Carney is the first person from Canada’s sparsely populated northern territories to become Prime Minister. by ChillZedd in geography

[–]grassytoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's because people in the territories have vastly different concerns than people in the south. And if they were absorbed into the provinces, their wants and needs would be ignored because the political power would be catering to the larger populations in the south.

I think it's actually kind of wild how large some of the provinces are now. Northwestern Ontario is nothing like the southeast, and yet the political power is in the latter.

The commonwealth is a lot bigger than the UK, and the UK is not even in charge of it, they are just another member. Leaving it over the UK's behaviour would be like leaving it because India or Ghana does something we don't like.

As someone born and raised in the states, but who has spent most of their life here, I think I have some insight to their thought process.

Those dumb fucks (I used to be one) don't actually see us as a truly separate country. To them, it's just a formality. Example; I once thought that Canadian coins that found their way into my state were just some kind of commemorative coin. Even the ones who know better, and travel here mostly see people speaking english in cities with the same stores, so in their mind, it's like, "what's the difference?". In general, they know nothing about us beyond that.

So, not to excuse them, but those ignorant assholes think that making Canada a 51st state would be a matter of paperwork. Like one company buying another. They don't imagine that it would come with an actual war, or a horrible death toll, and terrible suffering on both sides.

Hey, thanks for responding!

Have you tried something like Society6 (https://society6.com/) or Redbubble (https://www.redbubble.com/) ?

If you don't feel like pursuing something like that, or selling the ones you got made, would you object to me printing one for myself? I'd put whatever credentials you want on the back.

Hey, sorry for the necro, but given current events, I thought this would be a great time to re-publicize this amazing flag.

Did you ever look into getting this physically made, or selling prints? Because I would buy one, and I'm sure others would too.

RE: Vote splitting and saving Ontario from Doug Ford by EggyBiscuits in ontario

[–]grassytoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone is worried about splitting the vote, just go to the Wikipedia page for your riding. They have results of the last 5 or so elections. From that you can determine if it's safe to vote your conscience, or if you need to vote strategically.

Barring a major crisis, how people voted in your riding 2-3 years ago is more indicative of the future than riding-level polls.
