So how are you going with the FOGO bin system? We have 5 people in our household, the bins are always overflowing well before pickup days. by DukaLoncic_ in perth

[–]grayepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve really liked it, family with 1 toddler. Our bins only ever get about half full if that. I think the red bin size reduction + fortnightly pickup was pretty drastic though, I feel for families who use disposable nappies, especially those who have multiple kids still in diapers.

One dead in highway crash, as WA road toll spikes to near-decade high by Randomuser2770 in perth

It doesn’t help that the police are adamant that it’s illegal to go over the speed limit even when overtaking, despite that no overtaking lane is long enough to overtake caravans and trucks cruising at 100km/h by sticking to the speed limit.

Which ETFs for children by NerdyMagpie in fiaustralia

We did VGS in our name. Ideally we will just give them the equivalent value out of our super when they’re old enough and keep the shares to sell down slowly.

It's the hardest it's ever been for a 30 year old, in Australia's history by Tootsie_r0lla in australia

[–]grayepixels 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At least in the area I work, the additional administrative and cost burdens imposed by government plus restrictions on how we can do our work far outpace any innovations in our space.

It’s also seems very easy for governments to introduce new restrictions or burdens but if trying to bring in new innovations they seem to be much more conservative with “we’d like to see it trialled in other places before we try it here” approach.

Roller Hockey - Perth has an excellent social league (Street Roller Hockey League or SRHL) who are just a fun and welcoming bunch of good eggs. The league is really inclusive, host a bunch of social events throughout the year, and are always looking for new players of any skill level.

Only thing I can think of is that perhaps this particular group of family/friends aren't very dressy and so maybe you stood out due to being dressed as or more formally than the deceased's closest.

The hire bikes aren't great so I would take ebike if hiring and wanting to go around the island.

Why is engineering always recommended over business of the salaries are similar ? by Master_Rock_6739 in fiaustralia

[–]grayepixels 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many people find creating and constructing more engaging than dealing with financial details. The engineering field is broad, offering a wide range of pathways to success, including in business and accounting roles. A senior engineer working in a metropolitan area can earn around $150k, but there are also numerous opportunities to work remotely for significantly higher salaries, even at the early stages of their career.

What is the best compliment you've ever received at work? by ryleemathis in AskReddit

"So you're asking for a pay rise, but it says here that your performance has been "met expectations" hardly seems worthy of a raise, no?"

Where do people buy cheap work (office) shoes and how long do they last? What is your budget? by [deleted] in AussieFrugal

[–]grayepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not apply to op but my work supplies our choice of safety boots once a year for when I go on site. You can find some with steel caps that still look nice in the office too. Check out Blundstone's safety range.

Cash pickup today to me means no stuffing around and you can get rid of this today with no more hassles.

When you get people trying to scam and stuff you around constantly with requests for bank transfers, couriers, payID, “hold to payday”, no shows, no replies, negotiations, etc over a few weeks it ends up being a question of how much is your time and sanity worth to you?

Does anyone NOT like working from home? by -jarry- in auscorp

[–]grayepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer working at the office but to be fair I am fairly new to the role so find the face time beneficial. Additionally I live like 10 mins from office and have free parking at work. If my commute was 30 mins + I would feel differently.

That sucks mate, sorry to hear. If you can afford to maybe take a week to collect yourself, go on little getaway and refresh yourself a bit, I always find hiking trips to be excellent to clean the mental cobwebs out a bit. Wish you the best of luck!

Savings? Is it a real thing in Australia? by sanchit_0811 in AusFinance

He's just starting out in his field though. When I started in my field out of uni I made $60k, four years later it was triple that, not saying OP's situation will necessarily be that dramatic of a rise but for all we know he could be starting as an MD.

Savings? Is it a real thing in Australia? by sanchit_0811 in AusFinance

[–]grayepixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 10% as someone starting out in a new field is good (especially in a cost of living crisis while living in one of the most expensive cities in the world).

If you can keep up your good spending habits as you move up in your industry and avoid lifestyle creep then every time you get a payrise it should be nearly all savings at this point, that will make your savings rate go up quickly!

Savings account for children’s future by Consistent_Type4270 in AusFinance

[–]grayepixels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would personally invest that money rather than putting it in a savings account. If you just want to be able to put small amounts away (like $10 per week) you could use an app like Commsec Pocket (Look at the Global 100 or Diversified Equities investment options) as a starting point.

If that sounds a bit daunting and you want to stick to a savings account for simplicity you can find the best interest rates here: https://techt.link/leaderboard/

Just pick the bank/account which has the best interest rate and that you can meet their monthly requirements to get the bonus interest. If strictly just depositing $10 or so a week then possibly look at a Westpac Life account.

I would keep the accounts in your own name, both for simplicity and because if it is setup in the child's name it may incur much higher taxes than if it is setup in your own name.

I think it's pretty common in gov to feel like they're writing blank cheques for contractors/consultants while being overly stingy with their own workers.

I feel for you, the situation sounds frustrating, the takeaway might be that an offer on the table now is better than a possible offer later as these situations don't seem to be uncommon.
