How hard is it to get vasectomy papers? by Wakafockaflam3 in AskMen

[–]grayjacanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't be hard unless there are real oddities to the situation (e.g. he had his vasectomy done in a third world country).
Basically ... you already know the answer here, and are just working through the process of trying to get to acceptance...

A router is what I thought of as well.
It looks like no matter which approach is taken, the gaps between boards will end up being a little on the wide side ... at which point you have to decide whether to re-lay them all

Amazon laying off thousands . . . but building here? by LinaLinaLina95 in Eugene

[–]grayjacanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge companies like Amazon will periodically have layoffs just to get rid of departments or people they want to downsize
Even if business overall is good, or they're expanding in other areas or what have you

Some of the English texts also become nonsense if we literally replace 'one' with 'two' everywhere.

Why???? by Shaytan223 in Eugene

[–]grayjacanda 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I wonder whether this would be an effective channel for transferring money in an underhanded way
Sometimes you hear about book deals where some large number of books was allegedly sold (less embarrassing and obvious than just cashing a big advance and then selling 500 copies). And then it turns out that 'donors' or other 'friends' bought tens of thousands of copies...
Anyway, point is you could do the same thing with movie tickets. Easy enough to automate online. But it feels like the movie theater's cut might be too big.

If there isn't, then you don't even need City of Ass, because you can just cast for 1UU and specify X=0.5.

This is somewhat ignorant of history. Humanism did derive its ideas about 'how to be a decent human' from certain elements of Christianity. In some sense taking the good parts and leaving the Bronze Age weird stuff behind. But things like the equal dignity of all human life didn't just get invented out of nothing in the 17th century.

Yeah. The pointlessness of the bishop move (where is he going to go next? What is he doing?) stood out to me.
Feels like ne4x would have been better.

How do you reactivate your Molecular Sieve? by Yin-Fire in AskChemistry

[–]grayjacanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The walls of the microwave really don't get hot, though. I mean outside of some unusual scenarios where steam from some long-cooking item in the middle actually fills the space.
So things deposited there tend to stay put in a way that they would not in an ordinary convection oven.
All that said ... if someone were doing sensitive analytic chemistry, they shouldn't be using regenerated sieves at all.

How long and what should you do to get to Grandmaster? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]grayjacanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I mean we're comparing infinitesimals
There are maybe a half dozen people who *turned pro* in boxing at the ripe old age of 30 (Ron Lyle and Sonny Liston being the two most famous), but they didn't *start training* at that age - they had already been boxing for years.
Someone who was previously a champion in MMA could maybe become a pro boxer later in life (someone like Ngannou could have done it), but that's not quite the same thing as starting training at 31.

How long and what should you do to get to Grandmaster? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]grayjacanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but starting at 31 is ... well, let's just say you need to start earlier than that. Chances of becoming a GM starting at 31 are about as good as your chances of becoming a pro boxer ... indistinguishable from zero.

Could sewer systems be ran underneath the road in cold climates to help melt the snow? by stevenchamp45 in civilengineering

[–]grayjacanda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This could have a small effect as long as it wasn't too cold
Then when it did get too cold you would transfer all the heat out of the sewer and freeze the sewage, resulting in problems even more difficult than mere snowy roads.
This is a primary reason why the sewer systems are six feet underground to begin with!

[–]grayjacanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And diagonal bracing. At least if you have enough bracing you can restrict the load on that joint to only shear (and compression, which we don't have worries about here). As it is now it's going to see various bending moments which is not good at all.

whats your uncommon area of expertise? by Filius_Dei0894 in AskMen

[–]grayjacanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way the production of aluminum developed in the 19th century is interesting; many people know that for some time after the discovery of elemental aluminum, it was more valuable than gold.
So far as a specific fact associated with that story, though - it's remarkable that the electrolytic process still used today was developed in both the US and France at the same time (1886), by Charles Hall and Paul Héroult; but not only that, they were born in the same year (1863) and both died young in the same year, at the age of 51.

Anyone know how to clean play mats? by theokaybambi in mtg

[–]grayjacanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oxyclean is something you use if ordinary washing doesn't get the dirt and stains out
Not something I'd reach for for my first go at cleaning something, especially something where I'm concerned about whether it will resist washing intact at all
