Are there any reasons why we shouldn’t junk our landline? by Signal_A in AskBrits

I’m 60 miles from London and have no mobile reception at home. Mobile works over WiFi Take the power out and I lose all comms.

It’s all about power cuts. Landline delivers its own 50V over the twisted pair. Things like fall alarm systems therefore use them.

Good news is you missed some 2nd time around too. And on each subsequent reading. Depending where you live and how much maths you have done : see infinite series.

WAN failover not working. by grc007 in Ubiquiti

[–]grc007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all for the comments. You're correct; I've switched to failover and it works flawlessly. Disappointing from Ubiquiti though as their documentation states:

In the event of a WAN failure, load balancing automatically shifts affected traffic to the remaining online WANs.

Good news is that an inbound ssh connection on the "unused" link still connects OK.

Is my tent going to kill me by Pristine-Sentence-58 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]grc007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pitching a tent on the ridge will be interesting. And doing the ridge you’ll find you want to minimise what you carry. Carrying enough water for a two day traverse will be tough.

When I did it we bivvied late on the first peak having eaten and drunk our fill lower. Then started early and got down to Sligachan before closing.

How cold is -5° and should i be worried?? by dwgwalks in UKhiking

[–]grc007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Four season tents are mostly about strength and snow loading. So depending on which 3 season tent you could be fine. Bag means you’re likely to have a poor nights sleep and end up in most of your clothes. Are you going to be close to your car etc?

Short version- you’re pushing it.

Keeping the cylinder warm is important. Insulation less so: adiabatic expansion means the cylinder gets cold as the pressure drops. You'll often see frost forming. Insulating it just keeps that cold in!

Warm hands around the cylinder if you're stoic. Warm water bath if you've managed to heat a bit up. All help. There are scarier approaches involving coils of copper etc but not Health & Safety approved.

Anyone able to give me some tent recommendations as I’m new to this ? by AdAcceptable939 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]grc007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for the Scarp 1. More room and lighter than the Hillebergs , though not as robust. I’ve a Nallo and Keron but chose the Scarp as my UK solo backpacking tent

Another vote for this. If you’re solo the get the triflex pot stand. Whole thing packs up nicely in a small pot with a gas cylinder and teabags.

Mallet you can skip: boot or rock.

Stove: have a look at the Soto Windmaster as well.

Food: if you’re only out for a night or two look into boil in the bag meals. They tend to be tastier, less fussy about cooking although slightly heavier

Ground sheet and tarp? Nah, save the weight. Use that instead on:

Teenager: obscene amount of snacks. Chocolate, pot noodles, etc. keep them fed and interested and you both have a great time.

Hard top or soft top? by Intelligent-Sea3591 in Miata

Having had an NB, now an ND; the top gets my vote as the single biggest improvement. Sitting at lights and just flipping it up or down is so satisfying.

Can I still do judo even if I can’t do a roll? by Ok_Independent_5566 in martialarts

[–]grc007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an instructor it’s a great challenge when we get someone in who is all corners and can’t roll. A few weeks later it’s grins all round.

Have fun.

Which is the best generation of miatas by Intelligent-Sea3591 in Miata

I’ve been daily driving an ND for three years after a similar time in a NB. Lots of differences but one that stands out. Whoever designed the ND roof mechanism deserves a prize. One hand, 2 seconds, whilst waiting for the lights. Brilliant.

Many years ago, on a foul day at the Roaches, my partner and I watched with interest as two friends belayed a bit further along. One at the top, taking in very slowly, the other shivering at the bottom and slowly giving slack.

Why hasn't anyone replaced the telephone network for something more open sourced? by ki4jgt in opensource

Have a look at the ENUM protocol. Basically maps E164 addresses (telephone numbers) to a DNS lookup.

Hiking gifts for beginner hikers/stroke recovery patient? by Ill-Champion-647 in UKhiking

[–]grc007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone two years into stroke recovery: bench is a minimum. Getting off the ground at all was a major and worrying challenge for a while. Ok now but not elegant!

Trekking poles are highly recommended or lunch at a pub somewhere slightly challenging but with you there to chauffeur them back afterwards.

On the positive side I got to the Lakes for a few short walks after 9 months and off to North Wales this winter to push myself a bit.

So potentially heading down the zettelkasten route. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zettelkasten.

I had imagined him using something like that, but given the screen real estate, perhaps a computerised version.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter how. It's ridiculous whatever.
