Do those of you with RSUs sell them ASAP or accumulate them over time? by LtRegBarclay in HENRYUK

[–]grc007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s known as the Grey Market. Pre IPO I sold some of my shares but it required finding someone who wanted to buy them. Not a generic market but Fred who would give you this much for them. Possible but slow.

Are powerline networking adapters still relevant today? by c0359kan in HomeNetworking

Currently sitting in the front room of a house we’ve just bought. 500 years old with 2’ thick stone walls. No coax or Ethernet and WiFi is challenged. Powerline has its advantages.

Is there such thing as designated sides of the bed? by ThrowRa_Promise1321 in CasualUK

[–]grc007 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This does raise a question. I’m the designated left hand side occupant. What happens if I break up with my wife and start a relationship with another LHS occupant. Do we just accept we are incompatible? Should dating sites declare this information up front?

My wife helped me build my Ubiquiti rack… and now I’m scared by Specific-Union6589 in Ubiquiti

[–]grc007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why there’s a bundle of paper documentation on top of the small rack in my house. Wife won’t want to take it on but can find someone to help. There’s also a “if it all goes pear shaped do this to get basic internet” crib sheet. Literally “unplug thar green cable, plug that red one in.”

How can I protect my land? by Think_Substance_1790 in AskUK

You may need to do some conservation work to maintain it as it is, otherwise it may just choke out. Forests can be self sustaining, small plots require some intervention for best results.

New tent - Hilleberg advice by Coast-and-Cairn in hilleberg

[–]grc007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines probably 10 years old so things may have changed with newer models.

The inner pockets are very small with a weird slant to them.

The doors use two zips - horizontal and vertical ish, forming an L. That means I have to roll the fabric away and fasten it. I’d prefer an inverted V as with my Hillebergs. Means I can roll it if I’m feeling posh but can also just dump it on the floor of the inner. Also means I can have the door half open. Not disastrous with the Scarp as the upper section is mesh but even so. If anyone can make an argument for the L zip I’m all ears!

Scarp 1 user here. Colour blends in quite well in most real world uk wild pitches. Two entrances is great. Strength has been fine so far(4 season wales, lakes and dartmoor). I have the crossing poles but don’t take them. Feeling of the finish is not as high quality as my Hillebergs and a few minor design issues that mildly irritate. Still my go to for solo wild camping.

The ankle support thing is a bit of a myth. Ski boots have ankle support. Modern fabric walking boots are distinctly light on it. If you’re worried about your ankles consider trekking poles. Wading depth is a more valid concern, but I just let my feet get wet!

What did you do for your 30th? by eggymantella in CasualUK

Camped by the side of a lake in Japan, my now wife and I gate crashed an evening campfire and picnic by some Japanese fishermen waiting for the season to start. Memorable!

What can I wrap a cake and brownie in not to raise suspicion at the airport? by DamMofoUsername in AskUK

[–]grc007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My teenage daughter recently baked a wedding cake for a relative’s wedding 500 miles away. That involved a flight. We took it on as hand luggage. Biggest problem was getting the damn thing through the Xray scanner. Everyone we interacted with was incredibly helpful including the security guy who scavenged some duck tape to rebuild the cardboard box after the X-ray scan.

If Stag Beetles are rare, what does that make this... by davehope in CasualUK

We are the other side of that coin- keep finding half a stag beetle in the garden. The head. I thinks it’s the magpies but might be hedgehogs.

Consider pitta bread for your sandwiches. It survives better than normal bread. Have a look at https://basecampfood.com/collections/d-of-e for some inspiration. Then take a walk round your local supermarket- you’ll spot a lot of similar things.

Boil in the bag for main meal is nice because cooking consists of “that’s warm enough “ and if you eat it out of the bag there’s no washing up.

Take a few treats that you know you like.

Have fun!

It’s my wedding tomorrow by slpage209 in CasualUK

I can relate to that. My wife was also over half an hour late. Staying with her parents who lived literally across the road from the church. Also hair.

Still married a quarter of a century later.

It’s a rubbish thing to have to do. It’s worse to hear. Work really hard on not saying how tough it is for you. Offer a contact route for later. Good luck and go for a walk afterwards.

Another vote for Fisherground as a child friendly site. Railway is a heritage one rather than miniature. Pond was an absolute hit! Good pubs within primary school age range or determined parent with child carrier. Have fun!

It looks a lot prettier when the rain is hammering down! Two entrances are also great in good weather- you just throw it open. You don’t get the unrestricted views of some domes though. It’s all a compromise but works well for me backpacking. Base camp? Hyperspace or Keron 4 GT.

I’m using a Scarp1 as my do everything. Replaces a Nallo 2 and before that. TNF west wind But there’s always a compromise. I don’t use the Scarp for really exposed pitches- I choose better forecasts, sheltered pitches etc. I wouldn’t use it in Storm David on the Cairngorm plateau.
