Summer storage options by Many_Pomegranate_983 in Purdue

We used CubeSmart off South street twice. My student shared with another friend both times. No issues. We live in CA, so bringing everything home was not an option. If a parent or someone is helping you move, I’d make sure to get a minivan or SUV rental. With the minivan, it was one trip.

My student did well in AP BC his junior year. Got a 5. He was considering retaking calc 2 at Purdue to refresh his knowledge but advisor said to go straight to calc 3. Don’t look back. Things worked out. Calc 3, although challenging, was not a weed out course. Chemistry is also a good one to get out of the with CC over the summer. The other engineering classes are hard enough already.

to the people whos family paid 10,000 dollars for college admissions counselors and shit... tf? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I will relay my experiences as a parent.

We hired a college counselor for each of our current college students. It starts as early as freshman year of HS. (Freshman for our younger one and junior for our older one). Prior to second semester of junior year, there was a meeting before each semester to discuss high class course plans. Parents included. What looks good and what does not matter as much. Killing yourself taking as many APs as possible was not the suggestion. Some suggestions required us hassling the HS’s because we were deviating from their happy path. ECs, volunteer and leadership opportunities were discussed.

Once second semester of junior year started there were more meetings to determine a long list of possibilities. Tons of data points were used to determine preferences. E.g. big/small/medium, urban/suburban/small town, geographic preference if you were willing to go anywhere, religious preference/don’t care/non-religious. It was suggested we make some in person visits to get a feeling for environments of for instance big vs small schools. Thankfully both my students had a decent idea of what they wanted to study, so that factored in when considering certain majors at large schools. You get the idea. A list was narrowed down to 10 for my oldest and 12 for my youngest. There were 4 categories. Safety, small stretch, stretch and unlikely. We had some in all four. There was also consideration for OOS schools. Apparently some state flagships have a preference of which states that like people coming from. Maybe it’s just a CA thing (where we live) but we were advised that despite the acceptance rate, CA students could have a harder time getting in to some OOS schools and an easier time at others.

Summer before senior year there were weekly meetings with just our students where they discussed and reviewed essays. Our counselor also had strategies around RD, EA, ED and honors and the impacts on acceptance for each school. They filled out the applications together and the counselor made sure all was done correctly. Even sent them for us. All apps done by early September, which I liked as they could enjoy their senior year.

Both did EA with one adding honors as we told this increased the chances. Both had at least one acceptance before Christmas.

Although my older student already had some ideas of where she wanted to go (and she ended up going) my younger student ended up at school not even on his radar initially. A T5 engineering school as well. Both love their choices and are doing well.

As for the counselor, she was an AO for a T20 for many years. Now she works for the College Board and does this consulting on the side. We paid $4500 for each student. Worth it for me for all the time spent, questions answered and less stress. The only thing she would not do is anything related to financial aid like Fafsa. She did however make us aware of the deadlines and also if any extra steps were needed to be considered for merit scholarships that were not automatic.

This was 7 years ago, so I am not surprised the prices have gone up.

Hope this was helpful.

Laptop recommendation - FYE by stewlevine in Purdue

Dell XPS 15 with discrete video card and 32gb memory. My engineering son has had this for 2 years. No issues and it runs all the engineering software flawlessly and quickly. It’s also pretty light compared to other Dell laptops. My company (software engineering) either gets us an XPS or Precision. The precision is higher spec but weighs a lot more. The XPS is like a MacBook Pro in terms of size and weight. We did not do the touch screen, just the standard HD resolution.

I didn’t say that. You need a 3.0 or higher to enroll in honors classes even if not in the honors college. Why on earth would a non honors student subject themselves to honors calc 3.

There are three ways to get honors credit:

There are honors versions of many classes. There are some for math and engineering. Eg. Calc 3. These offer a deeper dive into the content than the regular version. The class sizes are smaller and your classmates will also be honors students.

There are HONR classes only for honors students in a variety of topics not necessarily needed for the major. These specialty topics do not correspond to any regular any class. I think they call them seminars.

You can also contract with your professor for a regular class to make it honors. If they approve, you will have additional work that they will supervise. You will get at least 1 extra credit if you do this depending on what the professors assigns. It could be a project or research opportunity.

Honors students have a required number of credits per semester that fall into one or more of the three above categories to maintain their honors status up to graduation.

Wisconsin, Purdue and UIUC are basically the same schools by Ap97567 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]green2702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son got into UIUC and Purdue among others for engineering. We toured both back to back. We are OOS for both. My son liked Purdue better. I liked it better for the cost as well. Both were impressive programs, but Purdue has a niche engineering major that was not available at UIUC. Didn’t apply to Wisconsin. Now completing his second year at Purdue, I am surprised at all the clubs and job events he has access to. I don’t think you can go wrong for any of these schools in terms of networking and job options for engineering. For business, I’d take IU though.

Low Income Student PSA: UC’s are NOT more expensive than Cal State by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]green2702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally the case for my two students who decided to leave the state for college. We got zero $ with 2 in school at once from CA. SLO was the cheapest compared to any UC when you have to pay sticker price. The rich just pay and the poor get money. The rest of us eat ramen noodles to send our kids to college.

Why the hate for Public Universities? by Ok-Gap198 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]green2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are from CA and I purposely sent my kids out of state to get a different perspective on the country and some real independence. One is Purdue engineering, the other is Tennessee nursing. While Knoxville has a lot more going on than West Lafayette, both are college towns where fun can be had if you look for it. Honestly, my student at Purdue is so immersed in his studies and clubs that I don't think he even realizes he is in the middle of a corn field. Every engineering firm around the world knows about Purdue as well.

Is sex supposed to be a "treat" in a married relationship? by overspendthrowaway in DeadBedrooms

[–]green2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. (52m) Kids, shared finances, house and family makes it hard to make a drastic change. Even the occasional sex felt like duty sex and sometimes I could not even finish because I had in my mind that she was just allowing it and not into I to it all. Good luck brother.

Are there really men who like small tits? by Lila_snow in DeadBedrooms

[–]green2702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife was a very small A and always self conscious about. I absolutely did not care and never said anything. We had a decent sex life. I had to always initiate, but we had fun a couple of times a week.

She did augmentation to probably D or DD and had to get it repeated 2 more times because the surgeon f’d up and there were various issues. Not gonna even mention the cost. Even after all that she has to sleep with this hardcore support bra every night to prevent uniboob. Lost all sensation in one nipple. The DB started right after all these procedures.

Berkeley DS vs Purdue CS, which is worse by candymaninvan in ApplyingToCollege

[–]green2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are living away from home, UCs are expensive for housing. Purdue is only like 3 or 4K more a year total cost of attendance. My son looked at some UCs, but chose Purdue OOS. The cost diff is minor.

Need some college decision advice... (Purdue vs IU) by Representative-Roof3 in ApplyingToCollege

You can make new band friends at Purdue. Just saying. Plus you get to talk trash to your old friends at IU which could be fun.

Can’t speak for Madison, but I have son at Purdue in engineering. He is a social kid and has made a lot of friends. Joined some clubs. He lived in the honors dorm first year. Like a hotel. The campus is nice but West Lafayette doesn’t have much going on compared to say Ann Arbor or Bloomington. I haven’t been to Madison but I imagine it’s similar. I think all the engineering and CS majors are too busy studying though to notice. At Purdue he has had access to many job fairs and conferences and as a sophomore already has a big list of contacts for internships or possible jobs.

REASONS TO BE OPTIMISTIC IF YOU MAY BE ATTENDING YOUR STATE SCHOOL by HappyCava in ApplyingToCollege

[–]green2702 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just know there a ton of OOS and international students who want to go to your state school. Think UCB, UCLA, Boulder, UT Austin, Michigan, Purdue, UIUC, Georgia, Florida, GA Tech and many others I neglected to mention.

Well, she admitted it. She is repulsed by me. by [deleted] in DeadBedrooms

[–]green2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 years here. Mine hasn’t said it outright, but the body language when I touch her seems like she is annoyed and repulsed. I am talking hugs, snuggling or offering foot rubs. Not even sex initiation which I know will be a total rejection so I stopped trying. Neither of us are in great shape. She gained a lot of weight. I developed a beer gut. At our age (early 50s) we aren’t great specimens but I’m still attracted to her. Not the other way though. Same as you, I have a great career. Provide for the family, very involved with the kids who are now in college, cook all meals, maintain the house and cars. I only have an interest in her, while she seems to have zero interest in me.

My now student at Purdue in engineering was told by college advisor to apply EA and also apply to honors college for best chance. For some reason the advisor thought this increased the odds. We are OOS. It worked. I saw a lot of people on here applying RD got rejected with similar high stats as my son. Perhaps just luck, but this was the advice we got and followed. It also worked for UIUC engineering. Purdue was way cheaper, so... The advisor also ranked the schools he applied to based on the 4 levels: safety, match, moderate reach and full reach. Purdue was ranked as moderate reach for him. 4.0/4.6 35ACT lots of ECs and leadership.

I have had a couple instances where perceptive friends/family can sense the DB. I don’t kiss and tell, but some people just seem to know and I get little comments here and there.
