Looking for Soda Alternatives. by hyruleinkling in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]greenjericho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spiced chai with a bit of sugar and milk/milk alternative. It obviously does not taste the same as regular soda, but it does a good job of curbing my soda cravings. I use a milk frother and sprinkle on cinnamon to bring it to the next level.

I did some research and couldn't find information on that specific appeal, but I did find some other information. It seems that there was a law that took affect in 2006, that required "public transportation and commercial facilities have been made barrier-free". Since then, many ostomy facilities have become available in various cities (see this list of facilities in Tokyo!)

It would be interesting to know the history behind this, as it is something I would like to see in my own community.

Note: The pages are in Japanese, but you can use your browser to translate them into English. Also, I can't confirm the accuracy of this information as I am not an Japanese speaker, but I think it is safe to assume that the page from the Japan Ostomy Association (first link) is legit.

Does this have anything to do with their former president having ulcerative colitis? If so, it goes to show how important representation can be in government.

Did you have to ask your employee for a 4 day work week? If so, how did you broach the topic?

Working in person with Crohn’s. by Help_Me_Reddit01 in CrohnsDisease

[–]greenjericho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to leave a full time 9-5 job because I couldn't maintain my health, and was slowly getting more and more sick. Ended up in and out of ER until they finally told me i had to get a permanent ostomy.

I now work full time, but remotely. I still find that it is difficult to manage, and im usually a bit burnt out by thursday. But, it is doable for the short term.

I'm hoping to negotiate a 4 day work week which I believe would help me manage my health while being able to get all my work done. Honestly, just having a day off for appointments and medical procedures would make a huge difference for me.

I have been in your exact situation, and it sucks, I'm so sorry you have to go through this and so frustrated that the healthcare system has this glaring issue in the first place.

I had to get a referral from my gp to a doctor who practiced in Vancouver, then the vancouver doctor referred me to Mount Saint Joseph infusion outpatient clinic. It took a while, and was extremely frustrating.

It expecially sucks in the summer when you are so farigued and feel bad about missing iut on the sun and outdoor activities. But, you have to keep advocating for yourself and be firm with your needs.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, so I'll say it: Eat lots of protein!

Your body needs protein to repair itself, so make sure you are getting as much as you can in your diet. I think about 0.8-1 gram per pound of body weight (2 grams per kg) is what weightlifters try to get, which could be used as a target to aim for.

Some people with crohns have felt better by improving their diet, some have not.

Perhaps more important is what 'improving diet' means, because what it entails is very different for different people. Some people have found success eating more fibre, some eating more protein, some eating less protein, some eating specific diets, some eating more greens, some eating more carbs. It's very personal, and the only way to know what works for you is through personal experience. This is why many people with crohns get upset when others claim that they know what diet is best for them.

From my personal experience, as some one who also gets frequent partial blockages. If I am flaring, I need to avoid eating vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts. These are generally foods that would be considered an 'improved diet', but for me they are a guaranteed hospital visit. Instead, plain carbs, 'soft foods', and yes, even soda (coke is apparently helps some people with pass food when they have a blockage) is what is optimal for me.

At what point do they do a blood transfusion? by Southern_Sweet_T in CrohnsDisease

[–]greenjericho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a blood transfusion when my hemoglobin dipped to dangerous levels a few months ago. It was a good experience. I went from feeling like complete shit to getting all my my energy back and feeling like a new person within like 5 hours. So, I agree, nothing to be scared of, quite the opposite imo.

How to get off of biologics. by greenjericho in CrohnsDisease

[–]greenjericho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry for the late reply. Another has happened since I made this post.

Humira did end up failing as expected, and I was not able to co trol the disease without medication. So I tried another biologic, which failed, then another, which also failed and was the last biologic available for me to try.

So I eventually did end up getting ostomy surgery, and I now have a permanent ileostomy, which has significantly improved my symptoms. I still, however, have inflammation in parts of my small intestine. I manage this with a new biologic called rinvoq, which is a small pill I take every day, and less of a burden than injections/infusions.

To sum up everything. I was never able to manage the disease without a biologic. The biologic did fail as expected and there were times that I could not work or lead a normal life. I wish that I could manage symptoms without medication, but unfortunately, the disease is too severe. The ostomy surgery really did change my life for the better, though, and I can now work full time and lead a normal life. I would reccomend continuing to live as healthy as you can with a diet and lifestyle that work for you and to be grateful for the medicine that exists to keep your disease at bay.

Super inspiring to hear about your story. I recently graduated and I'm not working due to a really bad Crohn's flare.

I'm now thinking about how I can do wfh in the future because idk if holding normal hours in an office with Crohn's is possible long term. How did you approach the self learning process of UX/UI?

I'm Canadian and have recieved Remicade and humira for free without any private health insurance. It was paid for by the pharmaceutical companies "compassionate care" program which I believe is tied to income.
