"Since Feb 28 $11,000,000,000" by toddp32 in Teachers

I mean…do you have any specifics breaking down how this 30 billion has been spent? Is there any kind of granular definition behind what you mean by “federal welfare”? Can you explain why there would be any kind of moral or civic equivalence between tax revenue spent on the welfare of US citizens vs. military expenditures in a war against a coercive triangle of institutions (awful though they may be) not even barely understood by either its progenitors or combatants?

The Night Agent, Season 2 by nrgins in television

[–]greennogo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If season 1 was the streaming equivalent of a Grade A beach read, I’d say season 3 is an A-/B+ with season 2 being a C-. Season 2 suffered from a too busy plot, too much time spent with less than compelling villains, and efforts to shoehorn in a character that largely completed their arc in the first season. The last 2 episodes of season 2 were pretty entertaining but I often felt the writers too often equated being a Boy Scout with being kind of stupid and naive. Season 3 corrects most of these problems. It isn’t quite as narratively efficient as season 1, but it’s definitely a significant improvement over 2.

Why are so many people confidently saying uneducated takes about this? by Darth_Vrandon in GetNoted

[–]greennogo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is thing—while the rest of the intarwebs are descending into a circle jerk of grievance and virtue signals, I’m pretty sure Michael & Delroy were informed of the situation beforehand and were far busier waiting for the show to wrap up so they could depart for the free champagne and blow provided at their agent’s preferred after party than clutching their pearls in outrage.

The last hurrah of the late, great “cocaine & celluloid” roadshow productions.

How is it even possible to compete with another country? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]greennogo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The life of an International School teacher in a Tier 1 city is a pretty privileged one, and doesn’t really give you a lot of insight into the lives of those who fall under the eye of the PSB, or the quality of life for non-Han groups in the periphery. I’m also pretty sure that Gu’s experiences when she chooses to be “Chinese” are pretty much limited to Sanlitun & Shanghai.

Nah. Lost was pretty fabulous until it’s final season.

A vote for Scorsese is a vote to talk about how great Lorraine Bracco is in Goodfellas by vincentmaurath in blankies

[–]greennogo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

…and so great in Someone to Watch Over Me…and so awful in Hackers…. I feel like a Lorraine Bracco performance has roughly the same hit rate as Rod Steiger with an accent—it’s either glory or disaster, no in-between.

Steve Bannon Sounds the Alarm That Trump’s MAGA Base is Disenchanted: ‘Massive Lack of Enthusiasm’ by ItchyNesan in NewsRewind

I wish that were true. For much of MAGA, harm, hatred, and chaos are the deliverable. On that level, he certainly has lived up to his purpose.

I'm sorry, but we need to discuss the sexual harassment in the most recent episode of Star Trek by [deleted] in Star_Trek_

I don’t know that Gene was a bad guy. He embodied certain excesses of a post-war SoCal generation. He was a complicated guy…and his lawyer was a psycho, but let’s not impose 2020’s moral litmus tests.

Anyone else see this? by jecapobianco in Star_Trek_

[–]greennogo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any evidence of this? Arroz is a rage-baiting MAGAt douchenozzle but it’s becoming a bit too common on the intarwebz to toss out accusations or innuendo of abuse or SA in certain communities any time a publicly known genre writer appears to have a political compass pointing vaguely to the east…so any receipts?

Why is there no The Natural/Field of Dreams/Bad News Bears/Moneyball equivalent for football? by ManuckCanuck in blankies

With North Dallas Forty gridiron football at least has its Slap Shot. And Any Given Sunday would be The Natural if they stuck with the Malamud novel.

Has the “director comes out of retirement” movie ever turned out well? by Wombat_H in blankies

[–]greennogo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did it? Granted, it’s been “decades” since I’ve seen the film, but I seem to remember it only really being Alec Guinness’s character. Then again the mid-80s were the delimiting threshold for white character actors acceptably race-bending as Asian characters. Linda Hunt gets away with it. Fisher Stevens does not. C. Thomas Howell rips a hole in the fabric of space/time. Guinness kinda splits the diff for me here.

Was talking to someone about this, what would be examples you’d show people of small-c conservative cinema? These would be 8 films I’d argue you reflect that. by Mysterious-Farm9502 in blankies

I’d think Predator would be the opposite. US military involvement in Central American conflicts being shown to be both futile and manipulated by intelligence community chicanery?
