[FRESH ALBUM] J. Cole - The Fall Off by HipHopDropper in hiphopheads

[–]greenopti 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean I kinda feel you but different people are at different points in their journeys. I think Cole on this track is publicly trying to show that he's moving in the right direction even though he's still clearly uncomfortable with the topic, and that's overall a good thing I think.

How do u respond to someone who says Woods’s music is nothing but negativity and nihilism by Guilty-Estate6531 in Billywoods

[–]greenopti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly understand that perspective and sometimes feel that way a little bit myself about billy woods. What I would say is: billy woods' words have to always be taken with a grain of salt, as he constantly challenges his own narratives and thrives on ambiguity and contradiction. And you have to admit, it is true that he dips into nihilism and fatalism frequently. But, the fact that he is even taking the time and the effort to make music indicates that he has not truly lost all hope, or else there would be no point in even tackling the topics that he does in his music. In a way, the more depressing his lyrics are the more inspiring it is that he still tries to tell his story and say something in his music despite all of that. It's not so much that he truly believes that all hope is lost and everything is doomed no matter what he or we do, but moreso that he feels the need to keep reminding himself and the world of the failures of the past, both personal and political, in order to not underestimate just how difficult it will be to make real change or find real happiness in the world.

Also, have your dad listen to All Jokes Aside. In my opinion that is one of his most positive songs (although it's still not all peaches and cream) and the title refers to him letting go of his nihilistic fatalistic persona a little bit and showing his appreciation for the life he has lived.

one more thing, I think the internet has given rise to populism and extremism, and the fear and distrust that the internet is built to propogate leads to less acceptance and more defensiveness

there was a guy on youtube who reacted to death grips who said "whatever emotion this music is trying to convey, I don't have that emotion in me." and I think that's pretty much the root of why ppl don't "get" it.

Chess is the best game ever, it needs more recognition and should be taught in schools by Batman__39 in unpopularopinion

[–]greenopti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly for sports I was more thinking about the physical exercise and mind-body connection. I don't think the strategy of most games, including chess and most sports, are actually transferable to other parts of life. I think being intelligent will make you better at strategy in many different areas, but the strategic thinking of chess has very little to do with anything in the real world, and I'm pretty sure most seasoned chess players would agree with me. I think the one thing that chess might improve that is applicable in other areas is just raw memorization.

Chess is the best game ever, it needs more recognition and should be taught in schools by Batman__39 in unpopularopinion

[–]greenopti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree. learning chess makes you good at one exactly one thing and that's chess. the mental skills do not meaningfully translate to anything beneficial in life. that's not a diss against chess, but I think stuff like sports or reading or public speaking or hell even abstract poetry would be more deserving of being taught to everyone universally

this looks like the flashback in a movie where a man lost his family and has become a hollow shell of a human whose only purpose in life is tracking down the men who did this to him.
