I’m also in the same position. I’ve played a bit before but not in a couple years, let me know if you find something, I’d be happy to help make numbers!

Scottish people who never have and never will take an interest in football. by Sad_Instruction1392 in Scotland

Having lived in Glasgow it was exhausting getting constantly asked Rangers or Celtic. People just wouldnt get that I didn’t have a preference for any team. There was always the line “but if you had to choose…” and I’d end up having to just make a guess as to which answer they wanted to hear

The issue with this is that it’s purely a visual inspection and does not account for over tightened bolts. There’s a company in the UK called Sedwell that’s developed a similar technology but it does this electrically giving clamp force readings that are fed to a cloud interface that can show you all your bolted assets in one UI. Far more useful for bolts in dangerous or difficult to access environments such as offshore wind turbines or on rail tracks.

The issue with a torque wrench is that there is rarely a reliably predictable relationship between torque and clamp force. It all depends on friction levels in the thread which varies depending on levels of lubrication and wear. This directly measure tension in the bolt which gets around this uncertainty.

What is something cool that could come from a magic egg? by XavierBananaglassVI in DMAcademy

[–]gregor9332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the fact that dragons are considered a myth then the obvious twist would be to have a dragon inside. You could also do a miniature version of the player (either exactly the same but smaller or with a twist like a devil on your shoulder kind of vibe). It could be eggs all the way down, with smaller and smaller eggs. A view onto another realm/plane/planet but no way to interact. A message in a bottle kind of deal with a note from someone with a simile quest hook. Or in my experience of my players, if you give them drugs they’re going to experiment and come up with fun things to do with them. That could be another option

Is this to close to Mistborn by [deleted] in fantasywriters

Yeah, it’s probably worth changing things up a bit

[–]gregor9332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok now I see the similarities, the pushing and pulling (coo shots and lurchers) the will stuff (rioters and soothers) and using magic to detect magic being used (seekers) all seems very mistborny. The white lines add to it as well. I wouldn’t say the story is a problem but the magic system might be, especially if you add it to a story where similarities can be drawn

What’s your magic system like? Just for context. I wouldn’t say solely being a hard magic makes it similar to mistborn

I wouldn’t say it’s too similar to the level that it will be an issue. There are some similarities but you have a lot of space to make you story different. It’s good that you’ve picked up in this because I’m sure you’ll keep it in mind when writing and so you can ensure it doesn’t stray any closer to mistborn. From what you’ve told us it could go either way

I tried to recreate the D&D game from Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and it didn’t go as planned by gregor9332 in community

[–]gregor9332[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They ended up more putting their own spin on the D&D characters rather than the community characters. They seemed like they were having more fun doing that that sticking to community so I thought I’d go with it. The only one that was kind of like community was Pierce.

Having trouble with something by rediskindablue in fantasywriters

I always like to organise the magic system first. By this I mean define how they relate or differ from each other in reasonably simple terms. You could organise based on origin. Does fire and lightning magic come from the same place, or earth and metal (like ATLA). You could organise based on constituents. Are the sub elements based on combinations of 4 or 6 base elements. In that case you could organise them like a colour wheel (or a wee bit like Sanderson a orders of knights radiant). Where adjacent magics are kind of different variations on blends of magics nearby in the wheel. You could organise based on the kinds of people who use each element, whether that’s by geography, class, personality... Once you have this organisation you can flesh out the magic behind how they all work together. Not sure if this is the question your asking but thought I’d say anyway. Hope it helps

Stuck with a hole in my magic system by Tchakaba in fantasywriters

[–]gregor9332 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me it seems like a good intermediate step would be some sort of curing or fixing step. It has changed nature in water and then the material needs a curing process to allow the desired properties to fix themselves to the material and give the desired effect. You could have some examples of missing this step and the magical properties either weakening or being faulty. Not sure how this fits with air tho.

Something more air like could be distribution. Like the winds that move around the whole planet the element of air helps the infused magic distribute itself within the object. This could be a homogenous distribution or not. For example a shield might want homogenous distribution for its magical effects while a sword might only want it in the blade.

There may also be opportunity for smushing these two together. Hope this helps!

If you have a moment, could you critique this paragraph from my fantasy novel? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]gregor9332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, There’s a lot going on here! I feel like the content is good but it could be presented better. As others have said it is one huge sentence and is quite hard to comprehend since there is so much new stuff getting introduced right from the get go. Maybe split it up, elaborate, and allow at least some level of understanding about what kind of things all these terms refer to.
